the primary causes of the Civil War were the expansion of slavery and sectionalism. Slavery was the main cause of the Civil war. It brought separation of both the north and the south. There were also issues that could have caused the civil war during the Revolutionary era in 1787. Abraham Lincoln becoming president sparked the war in the early years because he was a Republican president who southerners believed posed a threat to slavery, and by the resulting secession of the South.
