The political climate began to change after the 1900’s when people were fed up with what direction the nation was going in with the whole industrialization and urbanization that America had collided with. The political climate began to shift towards the progressive side. This change was known as the progressive era. Progressivism in the 1900’s was a social and political movement. Progressives were primarily educated Americans. Of those progressives, a group of sharp investigative journalist came together and brought light to all the injustices that were taking place in America. The poor communities are the ones who suffered the most from these social inequalities.

The Progressive Era was a time in United Sates History (roughly between 1890 and 1920) that bolstered unparalleled reform across America. Consisting of multiple social welfare reforms, three constitutional amendments, and numerous international policy changes, the Progressive Era resulted in very distinct changes throughout the country. One area of reform heavily emphasized by the movement was social welfare. Movements regarding social welfare aimed to confront and reform the growing gap in American society. As a result of the industrialization preceding and continuing into the Progressive Era, there was a disparity of wealth never before seen in American history.
The Progressive Era was a time of success and decline, as well as equality and corruption. The early 1900s consisted of advancements in technology, societal rights, territory, wealth, etc. However, the United States prided itself on founding a superior society based on its new principles (democracy, liberty, equality). The United States may have developed an industrialized, successful economy but it was constructed through unethical morals that did not obey its original institution. America was not living up to its founding principles due to racism, social hierarchy, and the rise of big businesses.

During this era, the US government was getting bigger and taking on more responsibility. Because of the expansion of urbanization and industrialization, there was an oil demand. With the expansion of urbanization and industrialization, there were more job opportunities for Americans. The government got involved more by giving Americans opportunities and jobs.

This movement started to take off when famous journalists were exposing the corruption of the work place, and politicians. Many issues came about with suffrage, and segregation, thus, helping to enforce the 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments. The political system was changing and the population was growing, but what really shaped the Progressive Era?
After the Civil War, our country was battered and beaten, but it rebuilt itself over time and spread its policies, as well as manufacturing practices, throughout our country. Early in the 20th century, members of our nation started to look at some of these practices and policies and began to question their merit and whether they assisted our population or not. Many people were involved in the progressive movement in America from the presidents to a slew of popular authors and photographers. The one thing that they had in common was that they saw problems with how various industries in our nation performed that they knew needed to be fixed. They did not always agree on everything, such as immigration, but they always had the nation’s best interest at heart.
Progressive Era The progressive Era was the time in which there were different solutions to the economic, social and political problems industrialization which was introduced to America. All first progressive started as a social movement and after sometimes it grew into a political movement. Social Darwinism was one of the early progressive that was rejected , they believed that most of the problems the society faced was from poverty,violence,greed,racism and education. They believed that the best way to solve the problem was to provide a safe environment,more job opportunity and also provide a good education.
From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.
The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.
The Progressive Era came to an end with World War I as the war exposed humanity's potential for large-scale cruelty (Social Welfare History Project, 2017). National politics took a part in the ending of the Progressive era. The Red Scare was a part of that because America had a fear that the United States would be vulnerable to a communist takeover (Schultz, 2013). America was not meant to be a communist country. Another issue they faced was with race.
