The death sentence, a controversial topic that was brought to our attention in this year's election in California through the means of prop 66 and prop 62. Prop 66 was to keep the death penalty, but to revise some of its aspects. While prop 62 was against the death penalty. This issue of sentencing a person for a heinous crime to death is such a critical topic because of the fact of whether to save the lives of criminals or take them away. I do not believe that the father of Hester Prynne’s child should be put to death with the crime that he has committed because the crime that he committed is not a crime that should be punishable by death. This brings me back to prop 66. In California “nearly two thousand murders occur annually and only fifteen death sentences are imposed”(prop 66 official voters guide). When the father of Hester Prynne’s child did not commit a murder or rape which those people who committed murder would be sentenced to death. Although prop 66 will bring justice to those families that have suffered great losses it still has it’s drawbacks, prop 66 is poorly written and might sentence innocent lives. It does not just affect the families that have lost people or the person who is being convicted it affects everyone. …show more content…
Anna Quindlen states that “the killing of one human being as punishment… is inherently immoral” which I took into consideration in my opinion. Yes, killing one person is “inherently immoral” and even when one person did not commit a crime worth the death punishment, but like prop 66 said only those who have committed the crimes of murder or rape should be on death row. To tie all these opinions and facts together, I believe that the crime of adultery committed by the father of Hester Prynne’s child is not worth the punishment of
By saying the individual on trial shall not live because they murdered another, this reflects back on the decision makers. It deems those making the decisions hypocrites. The court members are choosing whether one lives or dies, and if they choose the death option they are performing the exact crime the individual could be on trial for. Murder. The court’s final
Evidence showed Casey researched the use of chloroform prior to Caylee’s death, and the judge presumes "... She may have utilized [chloroform] to keep the baby quiet ... and just used too much of it, and the baby died” (Bowerman). No one will ever know the real circumstances regarding Caylee’s early demise, but the case made national coverage and motivated activists to propose new
He pleaded not guilty to two charges of murder with premeditation and special circumstances. The prosecution was allowed to seek the death penalty because of the special circumstance under California law. California has a fetal homicide statute in which a fetus at least eight weeks of development old is considered an equal victim, so Scott was charged with two charges of homicide rather than one. Because of the extensive media coverage and the Peterson family’s involvement with the community, the trial was moved to San Mateo so Scott could have a better chance at a fair trial.
Let the victim’s family live knowing their daughter, son, mother, father, etc is gone. Never coming back to them and their killer or rapists is still alive and thriving. Citizens of the U.S. are still largely in favor of the death penalty with 55% agreeing to keep the punishment [D.P.I.C.]. And with 41% of americans thinking capital punishment is not applied enough, and 52% believe it is fairly applied [Jones, Jeffrey]. We also have to remember what the victims last minutes were like.
Many of the townspeople clearly state that they are for it and want Dick Hickock and Perry Smith dead. Another factor of this is, Garden City, Kansas is the most religious part of Kansas, and even they voted for the death penalty. If they would have had the trial some place else in Kansas, then i wonder if they would have still gotten the death penalty, knowing that anywhere else in Kansas did not know the Clutters. Although religion does not go along way to help out Dick and Perry, but why doesn’t the law? The law is there for a reason, to follow it, why doesn’t the law come into play for the death penalty?
For the past 46 years, Leslie Van Houten has been in jail for the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. However, she was not in it alone. She was a part of the “Manson Family” that was controlled by Charles Manson. The Manson Family committed a handful of murders, but the LaBianca’s were the only people Leslie Van Houten murdered directly. Now, 46 years later, and after 19 parole denials, she has been granted parole suitability.
I believe that Danforth, the judge, is to blame. He chose to listen to the girls as a verifiable source of information. He makes the ultimate ruling on who lives or dies based on their accusations. He created more fear instead of peace within the community. He didn 't question their credibility until someone else brought that issue to light.
Proposition 64 would legalize the recreational use of marijuana for adults aged 21 years or older. Smoking would be permitted in a private home or at a business licensed for on-site marijuana consumption. Smoking would remain illegal while driving a vehicle, anywhere smoking tobacco is, and in all public places. In addition, Proposition 64 would create two new excise taxes on marijuana. One would be a cultivation tax of $9.25 per ounce for flowers and $2.75 per ounce for leaves, with exceptions for certain medical marijuana sales and cultivation.
In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, adulteress Hester Prynne must wear a scarlet A to mark her shame. Her lover, Arthur Dimmesdale, remains unidentified and is wracked with guilt, while her husband, Roger Chillingworth who seeks revenge. In June 1642, A young woman named Hester Prynne was found guilty of adultery in the Puritan town of Boston. Then a crowd gathered to witness the punishment and now she must wear a scarlet A on her dress as a sign of shame.
"The First Amendment is the epitome of what it means to be an American. Symbolic of our personal liberties and rebel attitudes, the first amendment was the first right citizens of a new country had. While the interpretations of this right vary, most agree it means protecting the speech of citizens from the overbearingness and restrictions of government. In the land of the free this right is deemed as necessary, however it has come into question over and over again whether this rule can be broken or bended to accommodate the reaches of safety. What do Americans value more highly, Safety or Free Speech?
In In Cold Blood, the issue over the death penalty is prominent. Did Perry and Dick deserve to die? Should the severity of one’s crime determine one’s fate? Although Truman Capote writes the novel in a straightforward, “from a distance” way, he conveys, through his characters, theme, and plot development, that the death penalty is an issue that should be looked at from all sides and that the legal system itself is the real issue at hand, and that the death penalty is used as a means to suppress the distress and indignation of the citizens surrounding the case, instead of suppressing the victim himself.
Two women from Texas, Andrea Yates, 37 and Darlie Routier, 27 both shocked the world when they brutally murdered their children. Both women were described as wonderful mothers who loved their children, but were also described as having post-partum issues during the last years of their children’s lives. Andrea Yates admitted to her harsh crimes and was willing to take any punishment that was given, as she believed she was saving her children’s souls. On the other hand, Darlie Routier did not admitted her crimes towards her children. Darlie Routier pleaded not guilty, but prosecutors believed differently after many conflicts appeared in her story.
The Death Penalty requires court cases and trials, long procedures, and life without parole for the criminal. It helps other people, especially the family of the victim, to feel comforted. Based on this, the question is simple. Should the father of Hester Prynne’s child be put to death for adultery? The father of Hester Prynne’s child should be put to death because it would be morally and biblically correct and it would help people feel safer and relieved.
The federal tax system is plagued with issues: It doesn 't raise sufficient revenue to back government spending, it is unpredictable, it makes results that are unreasonable, and it impedes monetary productivity. This part examines a few approaches to enhance charges, including making an esteem included duty, expanding natural taxes, improving the corporate expense, treating low-and center pay workers evenhandedly and productively, and guaranteeing suitable tax collection of high-wage family units. A good tax system raises the incomes expected to fund government spending in a way that is as basic, evenhanded, and development well growth as could reasonably be expected. The United States does not have a good tax system.
