The Power of Propaganda: Comparing Propaganda Used in Animal Farm and the 2022 Midterm Election
Although the use of propaganda may go unnoticed in daily life, propaganda techniques are a powerful tool that is utilized constantly by the media, advertisements, and politicians. Propaganda is a form of speech that is used to persuade people to believe or act in a certain manner in order to further an agenda. Prime examples of the effects of propaganda can be found in the fiction novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. However, the propaganda used in Animal Farm is not unique to the animal’s fictional world. In fact, propaganda techniques like bandwagon, fear, and name-calling were prevalent

Often politicians will call the other candidates in an election demeaning names in order to humiliate or point out their flaws. John Fetterman tweets, “BREAKING: Dr. Oz is a puppy killer” (@JohnFetterman). After animal abuse allegations regarding the mistreatment of animals by Dr. Oz and his team surface, John Fetterman uses name-calling propaganda to demean Dr. Oz and shed light on the recent allegations. Dr. Oz also uses name-calling propaganda to comment on John Fetterman’s flaws. Mehmet Oz tweets, “John Fetterman wants to raise your taxes, and LIED to Pennsylvanians about refusing to pay his own” (“John Fetterman wants”). Mehmet Oz describes Fetterman as a liar and criticizes his hypocritical intentions. These uses of name-calling propaganda contain numerous parallels to Animal Farm. In both the book and the election, the people in power use name-calling to slander those who oppose them. Napoleon classifies Snowball as an adversary to the wellbeing of Animal Farm just as John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz attempt to do to each other. To recapitulate, politicians habitually use name-calling propaganda to push the narrative to their audience that their opponents are inadequate to be
Diction indicates the importance of the slogan, a very simple set of seven words. Straightforward, short and powerful, and to the point. On the other hand, Animal Farm had the perfect opportunity to stand up and show courage. Napoleon, the antagonist of Animal Farm, wanted power without the proper established election method. No one spoke out when Napoleon duped Snowball to get his political position, they wanted to escape unfair treatment but ended up with an unjust ruler.
People of power, such as in a government, use propaganda to control others by utilizing ethos, pathos, and logos in order to create the most influential propaganda possible. The pigs, which are the authoritative figures in George Orwell's book, Animal Farm, display an impressive use of propaganda which easily manipulates the working class animals. Three examples of the types of propaganda the pigs use are Euphemisms, which correspond with ethos, testimonials to pathos, and logical fallacies to
Political speech is important for a democracy to function as a collective unit of individuals who make up a society that solves problems together. There is, however, the problem of propaganda when dealing with persuasive rhetoric aimed at a populous looking to find the best solution of the options available to them. Politicians find themselves looking towards the sensational rather than the rational when grabbing the attention of the masses. The discussion of political speech is one that spans centuries from ancient thinkers like Thucydides to the contemporary thinker Jason Stanley. In his book “How Propaganda Works”, Stanley looks to dissect the use of propaganda in society and differentiate what he deems demagoguery and civic rhetoric.
In the novel “Animal Farm,” written by: George Orwell, the animals' use of rhetorical devices led to conformity due to fear. Throughout the book, the animals express their dissatisfaction and concern with the horrible living conditions and the limited access to food they receive. As time goes on, the animals continue to be unhappy, and with the help of manipulation and persuasive techniques, the animals unite to rebel against man. They take over the farm, defeating their main enemy, Mr. Jones. Overall, in the novel “Animal Farm,” the animals use ethos, persuasive language, and diction to effectively manipulate their comrades to conform.
Some may think they know all the facts regarding propaganda, but most of what most people see is only the tip of the iceberg. In an essay written by Donna Woolfolk Cross, propaganda is defined as a means of persuasion. According to Cross’s essay, “propaganda pervades our daily lives, helping to shape our attitudes on a thousand subjects” (“Propaganda: How Not to Be Bamboozled” page 209). Often time propaganda is used in almost every aspect of our lives. There are several types of propaganda that Donna Cross identifies, such as name calling, glittering generalities, argumentum ad hominem, faulty cause and effect, and the bandwagon.
Propaganda is the spreading of ideas, rumors and other information to injure or help a person or an institution. One can see this concept in the book Animal Farm, a tale written in 1945 by author George Orwell. Orwell illustrates the use of propaganda in the Russian Revolution by utilizing animals as the main characters. In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the animals use elements of propaganda like scare tactics, scapegoating and disinformation to influence the other animals on the farm.
Propaganda Propaganda has been used for thousands and thousands of years. Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. It has been used by numerous nations or groups for numerous reasons. The most common reason is war. Governments seek to persuade populaces of the justness of their cause as well as hide the horrors and failures of the front line.
Propaganda is used in many countries to convince and remind the citizens of what they are trying to achieve to make their nation a better place for themselves and their future. Propaganda can be seen in many different contexts, such as presidential races, food advertisements, toy factories and even for people to vote for or against the law. One way propaganda has been used over the years is during wars so that the government could get their nation's attention and help them get the desired outcome. In the following passage, I will explain how propaganda is being used, not only in America, but, as well, in Germany.
Animal Farm- Lies and Deceit The book Animal Farm by George Orwell portrays the theme of how someone can lie and deceive others to get what they want just like how the two pigs Napoleon and Squealer used lies and deceit to gain power over Animal Farm. Napoleon lied to other animals, Squealer lied to other animals and they both deceived the other animals, but the sad part is that neither of them lied for the better of the other animals. They both lied to get what they want- power over the animals and the farm.
Phatcharida Boonpiset 5740159822 Hate Speech in Animal Farm George Orwell 's "Animal Farm" uses hate speech as a political tool not only is it effective enough to create hatred towards targeted characters but it also can bring power and political righteousness for Napoleon, who later becomes a leader of Animal Farm. Throughout the story, Napoleon and Squealer are the ones who mostly use hate speech in public and successful in using hate speech every time. For the definition of hate speech, according to Susan Brison, “hate speech is speech that vilifies, harasses, intimidates, or incites hatred toward an individual or group on the basis of a characteristic such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation," (Brison 1) and the word “speech” is used for all forms of communication including
Propaganda is used by the World State from the novel “Brave New World” and Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party. Propaganda is a way of persuading the masses for a certain organization or movement. It is a form of mind control and works on the fears and desires of the audience. The three forms of propaganda that the World State and Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party, use are the following. Bandwagon, convincing the audience to take advantage of the offer before it is too late.
In both events, propaganda is widely used in various ways and was effective. Despite the differences between the propaganda used in World War II and Animal Farm, both of them aims for the same goal - to rule as a dictator. People uses fear to make people follow what they say since they don’t want to get hurt. As what has happened in Animal Farm, Napoleon declared “Snowball’s expulsion” (Orwell 54) without the Comrades’ approval since they made noises of disapproval. As a result, Napoleon uses “the dog sitting around him to let out deep, menacing growls (Orwell 54)” to scare them away.
Animal Farm’s intentions were to be an allegory of the Russian Revolution and both were uses of propaganda in similar ways. In the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks used propaganda to declare their laws and rules to the Russian population and their authority of the Russian Revolution. In Animal Farm, propaganda was mostly used by the pigs. The use of propaganda allowed Napoleon to persuade the animals that Snowball was the reason their hard work of the windmill was wasted and that he was the reason of all the negative aspects of their lives. Also, the use of propaganda also benefited the pigs into having to do less work at times or them gaining the most apples or milk.

In the historical fiction novel Animal Farm written by George Orwell farm animals overpower their human leader and attempt to construct a movement in which all animals are equal.
