On February 26th, 2012 Trayvon Martin, a black teen was shot and killed by a white patrolmen while on his way home from a convenience store where he had bought a bag of Skittles and Iced Tea. Controversial cases, including the following, on whether or not the shooter was prejudice or racist are very common. Prejudice and racism are still relevant issues that can lead to violence and even death. In Kekla Magoon’s novel, How It Went Down, Tariq Johnson a black teen is shot dead while coming home from a convenience store. After the shooting takes place characters of different races and upbringings express their thoughts. Shortly after Tariq is shot a father of a black son comments, “How hard is it to understand? Like I always tell Will: If you dress like a hood, you will get treated like a hood. If you want to get treated like a man, you have to dress like a man. Simple as that” (Magoon 44). Because gang violence is common in Underhill, the way you dress determines how you are treated by others. Everyone assumes that the characters are up to no good, if they are dressed like gang members. Tariq was not only shot because he was black, but also because he was dressed in clothing that gang members in his neighborhood typically wore. One of Tariq’s friends also says, “But my mom took away all my hoodies last night. Says I have to make do without them, so I won’t get shot” (Magoon 95). Will, one of Tariq’s friends complains after his mom takes away all of his hoodies because she fears that wearing hoodies will make him look like a gang member. When people make assumptions that others are gang members or up to no good because of their skin color or appearance, they are more likely to feel in danger and take violent
There are many open wounds in the African-American community that have not healed what so ever. Disintegration of family structures in the African-American community has been a persistent problem for far too long. High out of wedlock birth rates, absent fathers, and the lack of a family support network for many young African-Americans have led to serious problems in America's urban areas. The persistence of serious social problems in inner-city areas has led to a tragic perpetuation of racial prejudice as well. African Americans still face a litany of problems in the 21st century today.
In Brent Staple’s essay, Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space, he discusses how the black are stereotyped and not in a nice way. The whites’ believe black people are dangerous to their community, that the blacks commit wrong doings and create violence everywhere they go. The author goes through many struggles in his lifetime, for example, people thinking he is a mugger or even worse. Staples writes about his “first victim” to begin his essay, the victim is a white women who is so scared that he is behind her that she sprints off as far as she can. When people see Staples, they immediately assume that he is a bad man, when in reality he is a hardworking man earning everything he has.
Ethnic mislabeling is an extremely problematic form of “casual racism.” Casual racism can be defined as racism that is predominately based off stereotypes or prejudices about people based on their race, skin tone, or ethnicity and that is used casually and without thought throughout day to day life. An example of casual racism outside of ethnic mislabeling is racist jokes made about stereotypes about a certain race or ethnicity. Ethnic mislabeling occurs commonly for people of Asian ethnic descent.
While Trayvon’s death was a tragedy, it was also an example of violent racism in the United States. Racial discrimination affects the way Americans think about race violence and relations, and should be eradicated as soon as possible. Besides Trayvon Martin’s death, there have been several occurrences of race violence in America. One such event was the death of Michael Brown Jr. at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson.
Rashad’s dad falsely accused and shot a black kid for getting his asthma inhaler, making him permanently paralyzed. Rashad’s dad was a cop for 4 years when Rashad was younger. One night when he was working, he went to a place with a noise complaint and saw two kids fighting, one white and the other black. He immediately thought the black kid was the criminal. “‘The black kid was dressed like...’
It is hard to understand the struggle of another person that is forced to live in a society where they are seen as inferior to the societal norm due to uncontrollable circumstances. How It Went Down by Kekla Magoon is a story about a young African American male that is shot by a white American male. The story is made up a multiple accounts of the people connected to the lives of Tariq Johnson and Jack Franklin. These are real life accounts of the person 's emotions and their point of view on the incident. The big question of the entire incident is whether Tariq was armed or not, and the more we are exposed to multiple stories the further we are from the truth.
If you’re confused and didn’t know what that was, it’s one of Tupac’s well-remembered quotes that is relevant to America’s conversation about race relations and racism. In The Hate U Give, “THUG LIFE” is a relevant theme in the book because it represents a history of racial relations in the U.S., is related to current racial issues that still affect ethnic minorities and the effects of racial injustice towards communities of color decades later. To explain as to why “THUG LIFE” is a relevant theme in The Hate U Give is because it is a representation of a history of racial relations in the United States.
Other examples of different hoods include the Hit Man “wearing a black t-shirt, cut off at the shoulders, and a cotton work hood”, at his wedding he is wearing a “silk-lined black-velvet hood”, and at the end of the story his son is found “trying on his first hood”. These hoods represent certain stages in life, such as work, marriage, and for his son, the beginning of
John Singleton’s film, Boyz N the Hood, displays the challenging upbringing of adolescents who have to live with harsh conditions around not only their home but also their surrounding town. The film compares the differences between the lifestyles of Tre Styles and his friends’, Darren and Ricky Baker. Darren and Ricky are half-brothers who are nothing alike. Singleton demonstrates the importance of male leadership in a home in the ghetto of Los Angeles by comparing the difference between the lifestyles of Tre and his friends. While many adolescents in the hood have close friendships, some form close relationships by assembling gangs and create a world of violence due to alcohol abuse, which together ultimately breeds discrimination.
When I heard the word “racist” for the first time, I didn’t know what it meant. I heard the word in a lot of classes but I never paid attention to it. After reading Farewell to Manzanar, I learned about racism and it’s actual mean. In Farewell to Manzanar written by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Jeanne and her family faced racism after Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was a place where the Japanese bombed.
They await the police to report the crime and an African American officer suggested to Furious that he should have just killed him to rid the streets of another African American thug. This upsets Furious because someone in a position of power is corrupted with the thoughts of black on black crime being the solution to the violence in South Central. The message behind this is to show how some people perceive the situation of what is causing the problems in their own community. In this African American officer’s perspective, he believes that the stereotypical young black man is almost always a thug and is the reason for all the crime in their
Racial profiling by law enforcement is commonly defined as “a practice that targets people for suspicion of crime based on their race, ethnicity, religion or national origin” (“Racial Profiling”). Racial profiling can be done because of stereotypes like “Blacks and Hispanics are more prone to crime” (Niller). However, that doesn’t mean that is alright for officers to “stop and search people” (“The Problem”) or shoot them because they look agitated. The power to stop and search is given by the fourth amendment requires that the police have a “reasonable suspicion that a crime has been, is being, or is about to be committed before stopping a suspect.
An immigrant from Mexico comes to the United States. He is seen as an "illegal" by prejudiced people who believe stereotypes without knowing his situation. However, the immigrant himself might consider it differently: he has worked hard and has maybe tried to get a better life. Many books have been written about this idea. Sherman Alexie’s book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian,” was story depicting racism through the eyes of someone who is being suppressed by it, a teenager named Arnold and interacting with people from both sides of it, placed in 21th century on a reservation in Washington(Near Idaho).
‘A Time to Kill’ is a movie that depicts the racial tensions between the white and black Americans in the past. The movie revolves around the life of Jake Brigance, a lawyer, and Carl Lee Hailey, as he struggles with the law and racism after seeking justice for his raped 10-year old daughter. As Carl Lee approaches Brigance for help with his case, they both face the challenge of blurring the lines between the white and black Americans and helping Carl Lee escape the long arms of the law. In the movie, racism, negligence of one side of the story, and objectivity are applied.
