Following a legion--The New Coach by Ned Linch
“Tell us how you did it coach.” These words were forced into my face with a camera lens almost resting against my cheeks (page 395). The team did it along with some guidance from my assistant coach and the parents. I want to thank my assistant coach who is the baseball expert. He used to play in the minor leagues and the team loved him because of his dedication to their lives and his credibility at baseball. I think they hated me because I introduced the pull-up to their strength and conditioning program. Regardless, I was all about making them the best well-rounded people before they head into the cruel world.
I'm glad they have a state championship win so they can have a trophy displayed in our clubhouse and to validate their strength as a team versus individual players. I think in a few years they will realize the significance of this year and it wasn't about that trophy (page 107-108).
“So, what about this year coach? It was your first and I know that was tough coming in to replace “the legacy”. How did it start for you?” I tell you what, you take that camera out of my face and come with me. I need a good hour with you to tell the story.
It all started last year when Jimbo Johnson, the

So, I opened the door to listening to them and their suggestions by using the cooperative-style. This style involved sharing decisions with the team (page 31). I gave them direction, provided instruction and only used discipline when only necessary plus I allowed the athletes to make decisions and assume responsibility (page 31). I accepted guidance from my staff and parents, too. The team’s culture changed for the better and became our social architecture that fueled the team psyche. It was a positive environment and climate for success instilling commitment, inculcating pride, and building team spirit (page
This picture shows a team of determination. This picture is the rivermont raiders All star team including Ethan McGill and a bunch of his friends. This picture tells a story that is story book quality and is the pride and soul of all the alumni of the raiders team. In paragraph 4 Mr. Abate prompted, “Watching a peer receive a trophy and not receiving one yourself can be degrading”, no kid wants to see somebody be awarded a trophy but not get rewarded themselves. If a child loses interest because they never receive a trophy they might stop playing the game or stop participating in the team building activities. Parker Abate also suggested that the trophies should be given because of the time, dedication, and effort they put in to being on the team and playing on the team, “These kids dedicate time, effort and enthusiasm, and they deserve to have something tangible to make them feel that their participation was worthwhile”, it would seem unfair to have the kids give so much for
“This has got to be a freshman game attendance record,” my teammates said. Our coach was even astonished, “I have never seen this building so packed.” I immediately stopped the drill I was doing and just watched. My eyes lit up wider than a kid in a candy shop who just received his allowance. Then the noise began to rattle the PIT into an environment of bedlam.
I was so ready for this game. Ever since I learned Coach’s special family stance I’ve been practicing at home with Josh. Today was the day for me to show the team that I’m not “Mr. No hitter”. Coach Jeremy was so ready for me to hit a big one that he put me as #2 to hit. All of the sudden the National Anthem started playing and then it was time to play ball!
High school athletes need someone who is concerned about them, not the number of wins and losses throughout the season. Many sports coaches start the season with having the best intentions for the athletes, however, as the season progresses on the goals and motivation can begin to change due to the competitive nature. The important protocols and safety guidelines will sometimes be overlooked if the coach is unaware of signs and desperate for the win. Scott Sailor, the President of the National Athletic Trainer 's Association states, “We look at the big picture and whether what they are doing is going to be in their best interest or create more problems later on. Our job is to bring everyone together with the health of the athlete as the No. 1 priority..."
Everyone gets a trophy even the people who didn’t do nothing or aren't good enough and hurt the game or activity because of their lack of skill. In paragraph 2 she says “Trophies used to be awarded to only the winners, but are now little more than party favors: reminders of an experience,
My time in 4-H, working, volunteering, and my first semester of college have provided me with leadership opportunities and experiences that were often challenging. In order to cope with these challenges, I had to develop skills that would allow me to move forward. The first of which is the ability to work well on a team. This skill is one that I’ve had to practice in many environments such as completing a group project, playing softball, working in food service, and volunteering as a camp counselor.
The second I was on the field I knew my team had the game won. All I could see around me was a group of men ready for war. I couldn’t be more ready for my last home opener so after I did what I do when the unexplainable happens, accept it. I ran to the 45 to the 35 to the 20, hoping to find the kick returner. 8 months waiting for this moment all the sweat, pain, 100 degree sun beaming UV rays to my face.
But my course in life has switched courses. Along the way, I dropped off the other sports and continued on with America’s Favorite Past time: Baseball. Since my size dictated my playing time, according to the coaches, it affected my devotion to the game because it is heartbreaking to be told you cannot do something. Over that period of time I realized how influential coaches are to their player, so I decided to become a coach to instill the never quit attitude in younger player’s minds. I have been coaching with Boca Raton Little League Baseball since my sophomore year, teaching the fundamental skills of baseball
As a coach, I also believe it's essential to encourage athletes to embrace a progressive mindset, in which they are encouraged to see challenges and losses as opportunities to grow (Dweck, 2008). According to studies on achievement motivation, athletes with a positive mindset are more likely to persevere during difficulties and challenges (Yeager & Dweck, 2012). Finally, I believe it's imperative to create an environment of trust and respect among the team members to ensure every athlete feels appreciated and
Ninety five percent of all participants in sports fail to capture a championship. Receiving a trophy can also be motivational for a child, and they may try harder next time. Receiving a trophy may help build enthusiasm to return for another season. Additionally, it reminds kids that people do value their effort, regardless of how well they play.
The thought going through most children 's minds is, "why try if I know I am going to get a trophy anyway." A trophy is always secured in their mind. Trophies today have a whole new meaning. They do not symbolize a victory or achievement; they are merely reminders of childhood. Betty Berdan, a junior in high school says, "When awards are handed out like candy to every child who participates, they diminish in value.
They were able to relate to the one inch at a time proposition of pulling together to come out of the disarray the team was in. They were touched by his honesty and openness in the beginning of his speech, which was an attention getter, then intrigued by the challenge to sacrifice for the team and fight for the inches need to win and survive. The coach ended the speech with a summation of the team fighting for that inch together and then concluded with the question, “…now, what are you gonna do”. The inspired team then went on, played with their heart, and won the football game.
User "There are many essentials in starting, building, and maintaining a successful basketball and football program. Some of the different parts include a cohesive coaching staff, a program philosophy, a commitment to the character development of players, and the development of yearly traditions. Other factors such as developing team chemistry, communicating with players and parents, putting the athletes first, and putting winning second all lead to the program's success. This chapter will describe the critical components of developing a successful basketball and football program at the high school level. If a coaching staff uses this outline of a successful program, they will build impacting relationships with their athletes and prepare them
