In every society there is a norm which is an expectation or ideal features for the individual. In Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher Andy Mott and Carly are rebels against society and its norms. Rebellion comes in many forms for some it’s how they style their hair or their clothes, but for Andy it's with his “could-care-less” attitude. In addition to his attitude he is ruthless. For Instance, he does not care about what people think about him or what they say about him. During the rally “he hears someone snicker at his name and gives the entire crowd middle fingers” (Crutcher 124). In other words Mott voices his opinion by telling society he could care less about their opinion. This is important because instead of getting embarrassed by society, he embarrasses society. Furthermore, at the letter jacket ceremony “ Mott pulls up his pant leg, unhooked his leg and thrusts it high in the air”(Crutcher 277). At this point he owns his …show more content…
Carly however is the opposite of that stereotype. Carly is tough and is her own person. In addition to Carly being tough she is independent. For example, she tells T.J at the dance “If we're friend we’re friends, if we have sex we have sex. I don't sleep with more than one person at a time and won't go with anyone who does” (Crutcher 75). This clearly shows Carly doesn't need a guy to define her. It also tells the readers she expects to be treated right and won't settle for anything less. Furthermore, Carly knows how to defend herself. On the night of the basketball game Carly “got a beer opener from the kitchen and a ball peen hammer and redecorated his brand new Lexus” (Crutcher 74). In this situation Carly doesn't cower to her father like expected of her. This tells us without a doubt Carly isn't the weak little girl society wants her to be. Instead, Carly rebels against society by setting her own rules when it comes to her relationships and not backing down against her
Pittacus Lore once said, “The price of a memory, is the memory of the sorrow it brings.” In the realistic fiction book Whale Talk, by Chris Crutcher, The main character’s name is TJ, and TJ’s father said, “a good day is one in which you avoid remembering the events of July 27, 1968” (Crutcher 56). What happened that day was that an eighteen month old boy was wandering and was lost. What resulted from this was that he ended up outside and got stuck in between two of the tires of TJ’s father’s pickup truck. TJ’s dad didn’t check the truck, and started driving without noticing what he did.
Liz Prince explains her life story when she is from the age of four to her teenage years and to early adulthood. Liz Prince is not a girly girl as she grows up. She resists following or confirming most of the stereotypes that society has put on girls. Even at the young age, she knows that she is not described as a girly girl, but identifies herself as a tomboy. She prefers to not wear dresses and play with toys that are meant for boys.

When it comes to doing what 's right; when stuck in a dilemma, how does one conform? Society is constantly edging us to submit to external pressures with the fear of being judged even if it might be the wrong decision. Two Fishermen, and The Snob illustrated by Morley Callaghan are both exceptional examples on how society views and pressures can have an impact on one’s actions towards a situation. Whether it is based on one’s hierarchy placement by assumptions or, even when one gets judged by the way they appear. Throughout these two short stories, the protagonists Michael and John are placed in tough situations making them face societal obstacles.
Imagine if onee decision you made affected the rest of your life. Rich Marshall made a few questionable decisions. Those decisions had a big impact on the future. The impact those decisions had on Rich's life did not help it's physical or mental state of health. In the book, Whale Talk, by Chris Crutcher, unhealthy relationships dictated Rich Marshall’s future.
She employs many literary devices that support her specific claim in this passage as well as she provides many clear examples of how stereotypes have shaped young girls’ lives throughout the book. Through these examples she succeeds to use them as evidence so the audience does not conform to

The other point of this paper is how society changes you. If you are rich and you don’t look like it you wear off brand clothes then society will change you when you get with the right group. If you stay with the group of friends that you have been with then you will be fine. If you want to let society change you then go ahead but always remember if you judge someone without getting to know them then you are dead to
Chris was a leather tramp, meaning he would hitchhike around or walk wherever he went. After he left his parents and went on his journey he did not stop and settle down very often. This changed when in October 1991 he settled down for two months in Bullhead City, Arizona, the longest he ever settled down. Chris’s experience there is very different from his experience on the road. He gets a job and even opens a savings account at one of the banks.
A rebellious person is someone who “defies or resists some authority, government, or tradition” (Dictionary.com). Chris McCandless’s persona can truly be encompassed by this one word, “rebellious”. Often people find rebellion to have a negative impact on the individual or society who go against accustomed traditions and beliefs. Chris’s rebellious nature is on the opposite side of this spectrum because his only goal was to improve his life through his rebellious adventures. Chris once stated, “So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation” (Krakauer 57).
What really drove Chris McCandless into the wild? I believe the top three of the countless reasons that drove McCandless into the wild was the emotional damage from his parents, rebellion of the youth & risk taking tendencies, and his hubris and detestation against authority and/or someone telling him what to do. Some may believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild because of his literary heroes Leo Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau , and Jack London but the real reason he left everything was because of those reasons. In this essay I will elaborate on why I believe those are the reasons that drove McCandless into the wild.
Betty mentions that more than style preferences, the girl’s behavior represented group membership for them. In other words, each group was aware that their style was in opposition and try to maintain their symbolic boundaries as an important tool for distinction. Most important, Bettie points out that their style preferences became to represent a categorical definition for the school personal. This category being the assumption that the preps were innocent and pure, while las chicas mature and low class. Thus, Betty claims that rather of seeing their style as markers of class distinction, the school personal saw las chicas’s performance as evidence of their heterosexual interest.
The article “The Third Wave” by Common Lit Staff and “Animal Farm” by George Orwell both relate to the central idea of conformity. In the novel the animals are all gradually becoming increasingly similar and joining one way of life. This was also shown in the article when the students all wanted to become apart of The Third Wave. In “Animal Farm” Boxer is ignorant and listens and conforms to Napoleon and his followers and one of his mottos he lives by is “Napoleon is always right”(56). The animals all listen to Napoleon and being different is not accepted, being a follower and obeying Napoleon is what all the animals want to do.
