Robotic Surgery Imagine a robot operating on you, and there is no other surgeon in the room. There might possibly be a monitor that stands in the room to make sure that the procedure goes smoothly, but that is it. Actually, the surgeon controlling the robot, possibly a da Vinci Si or Xi, is across the room, across the country, or even maybe on the other side of the world. This is the future of surgery. Today, there have been over eight hundred thousand robotic surgeries by approximately four thousand robots all across the world, and that number is only growing.
The da Vinci Si and da Vinci Xi have dominated the field of robotic surgery. These robots were created by an American company Intuitive Surgical. The initial approval of these robots

William Peine, the Director of Surgeon User Interfaces at Medtronic MITG, stated that “Robots don’t perform the surgeries, but they are tools that give the surgeon more derexity. They let you get into confined spaces. You can eliminate hand tremor, and you can be very precise and delicate. It’s as if the tips of the instruments become your fingertips.” The robot is made up of two separate, but connected sections: the tower, and the console. The tower is positioned directly over the patient during surgery. It contains the robot’s four arms—three that can hold a multitude of different surgical instruments, and a fourth that holds the system’s 3-D cameras. These arms are controlled by a computer that exactly replicates the movements of the operating surgeon. The console is where the surgeon sits and operates the robot’s controls, and he/she looks into a stereoscopic monitor that produces a magnified, high definition 3-D view of the surgical site. The surgeon manipulates the robot’s four arms by maneuvering two master controls that provide fingertip precision of movement.
One woman, named Tamara Baker, suffered a severe hernia. She was a retired Clarkstown teacher and decided to get surgery by a da Vinci Si surgical robot. Tamara acknowledged that “With the old surgery, they would have had to cut me open from my chest all the way all the way to my abdomen. I was discharged two days after

They believe they are equally or even more efficient than a robot in the surgical process. They also highly believe that the robots are an expensive addition, or possible downfall, to the American healthcare system. Too many risks are at hand, they think. They believe that they are more reliable that a piece of machinery.
Robotic surgery is opening multiple windows to different opportunities in the future. Opportunities that include telemedicine or even long-distance operations. Telemedicine is the ability to communicate with a doctor or physician through a monitor or computer. The doctor would prescribe medicine or find a diagnosis of the patient’s sickness or ailment. Also, the world is going to see more long-distance operations. Robotic surgery may be the next best thing or the world’s next biggest
The limitations are to be addressed such as lack of infrastructure, high start-up cost and optimal funding need to be allocated. At this point of time it is apposite to to plan for the future through this recommendations using the telehelath, good governance, maintain good infrastructure, patient awareness and implementing the laws. Implementations of all this will transform the current health care into technological advanced health care. There by reaching being more feasible to clinicians and patients.
j.amjsurg.2004.08.025 This article talks about the progress that robots have made in surgery within the last 20 years. It discusses how in the future the robotic technologies should be smaller and more cost effective. I chose this article because it talks about the different types of robotic tools that have improved the way that surgeries have been done throughout the years and the possible future of robotic technology in surgery. Char, S., Hills, N., Lo, B., & Kirkwood, K. (2013, April 1).
In doing this, I can ease of their fear. It is immensely important to be able to translate the potentially frightening experience of surgery into the vastly beneficial procedure it is. Therefore, I think that pursuing such a career will provide me the opportunity to help patients fight their
Hollywood 's negative depiction of robots greatly differs from the reality of them. Many jobs that are too dangerous for humans to do can easily be done by robots. Not only do they help us on Earth, but in space too! Scientists are studying ways that robots can help human health through exoskeleton-like prosthetics. Though science fiction says otherwise, robots are beneficial to humans in many ways.
The evolution from idea to application involves an integration of multiple theories, practice models and frames of reference. Robotic assisted therapy is a form of rehabilitation therapy that strongly integrates biomechanical and motor learning frame of references. Robot-assisted therapy is built on a strong foundation of the biomechanical frame of reference. Robot-assisted therapy applies the principles of kinesiology while taking gravitational forces on the body into consideration. The focus of this framework is to address the range of motion, muscle strength and endurance of the patient (Cole & Tufano, 2008).
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS), there is an 18% job outlook and is growing “faster than average” between the time of 2012-2022. The increase in job opportunities means there will be more insurance in obtaining and keeping a job, in fact there will be about 124, 000 more jobs available for surgeons by the end of the ten year range according to BLS. Not only is the plastic surgeon group growing, many subsections are available, which allows many doors to be opened. Some of the plastic surgery subcategories, “including cranio-maxillofacial surgery, microvascular surgery, hand surgery”(Maser). Hand surgery is focused on improving and changing the shape and structure of a hand while allowing it to still function properly.
Robotic prosthesis is an area of study which examines the use of robotics to replace human limbs. This can be used to help the physically disabled or impaired, giving them new self sufficiency. This was not long ago thought to be an idea of science fiction but work to this end has been proven to be a realistic goal. Research has already show substantial results, such as research done at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, one of many research groups have shown results in controlling mechanical limbs with only the same thought required to move a natural arm, interfacing the body with machine ("Will a robotic arm ever have the full functionality of a human limb?").
While a surgeon might be very good at their work, if using these robots is new to him, the probability of making some mistakes during the procedure is relatively high. A surgeon experienced with using these robots is the greatest assurance you can get when preparing for an operation. The Future of Robotic Surgery Just last month, John, a 59-year-old man in Auckland, New Zealand became the first man in that country to undergo a specialized robotic surgery. The man, who was diagnosed with oral cancer last July, decided to undergo a robotic surgery because he believed it would be more accurate in removing the tumor and that he would have a shorter recovery time.
Space agencies around the world have a long history of collaboration, including with public health agencies. Space has also provided many new human experiences, such as zero gravity training. This training has showed various effects on the human body, helping scientist to better analyze the human body.” devices developed for space missions, such as the robotic arm that was used to assemble the international space station, have been adapted into a smaller robotic device for use in surgery” (Pascal 519). This robotic arm helps to be more precise during surgery, making the rate of casualty lower.
“Unions generally believe automation to be a competitive advancement that makes jobs more secure.” Also, robots are just another way to make companies more efficient and work alongside humans like “coworkers.” Some Americans tend to dwell on how many jobs robots are taking, rather than the new jobs being created because of the advancements. Many also believe humans will lose money or there will be a catastrophic effect on the economy. These possibilities
Unlike a robot, Baymax can think and make decisions on his own. A team of medical researchers led by a biochemist named Peter Kim who works for the Children’s National Health System have developed a new robot called STAR (Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot). STAR can configure algorithms to decide where and how to place a suture in soft tissue specimens. This means STAR has the ability to calculate the algorithm to decide its next move. Although it is not the fasted method for placing sutures, STAR has produced more precise results than a human surgeon, laparoscopic or robot assistant surgery (Herkewitz, 2016).
Also they do not need extensive training to do a task perfectly. These are characteristics that increase efficiency and productivity to their maximum, which attracts companies’ interest. Consequently, cost will be reduced since it is way easier to annually pay a robot’s maintenance than to pay training, salaries, and health insurances for human employees. Finally, the robot’s durability makes them an outstanding option for a large majority of
Many jobs have become easier by being replaced by robots. Robot are not just the idea of talking mechanical parts as we see in futuristic movies. There are a variety of different types of robotic machines, great majority of them appear in factories and in science technology work fields. Robots in factories help replace a dangerous parts of a job. However, there have been different perspective with robots replacing jobs.
Technology has been advancing over a number of years to where it is now. New technologies are being created on a daily bases to improve quality of life and our experiences. Today I will be looking at; Robotics and the advantages and disadvantages that it imposes. Roboticists are persons who develop a man-made mechanical device. These mechanical devices motion behaviour are sensed, planned, modelled, operated and controlled which is influenced by programming.
People think that when they break their leg, they always have to go get an x-ray first, but if it happens right away, then a suggestion is they can go to an orthopedic surgeon for a speedy recovery and a successful outcome. Orthopedic surgeons are helpful in many ways. They repair bones and joints in the musculoskeletal system, when there’s fractures, sprains, diseases, cancerous tumors, etc. They can also focus on a specific part of the body, like: spine, hand, leg, etc. They also treat people of all ages except for very young children.
