Philip Zimbardo once stated, “I'm saying to be a hero it means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take a risk. Heroes always deviant. Heroes are always doing something that most people don't and we want to change.” I completely agree with what Mr. Zimbardo said, A hero is someone who will always be willing to make a sacrifice for the greater good. Stories about heroes have been around for much longer than most people realize. For example, one book that could possibly have been made in the 8th Century B.C. was The Odyssey, The Odyssey is a very old story about Odysseus’ struggle to return home after serving in the trojan war. This book is one of the farthest dated …show more content…
For one, because you never know when you'll need their help. And two, because it's a sign you respect people, which all great leaders do.” To be a great hero you need to be a great leader. Heroes work to improve things and make the world a better place, if you can’t lead people in the right direction then how can you become a good hero. One great leader is Captain Chris Carter. When Chris Carter noticed a crying, elderly women in the middle of a firefight taking place on a bridge, he did not hesitate to do the right thing. He ordered his armored vehicle onto the bridge while him and two men went to her on foot. While using the bridge's steel beams for cover from the iraqi bullets, he tossed a smoke grenade for cover and ran to the women’s side. Being the great leader he is, he ordered his men to carry her to an ambulance off the bridge while he provided them with cover fire. This women could easily have been shot and killed if not for Chris and his soldiers. If it were some other captain there, not him, they could have simply kept fighting and not have rescued her. 4,486 American soldiers have died in Iraq and 2,345 in Afghanistan. If it weren’t for great leaders like this guy then there could possibly been many more. That is why I think you need to be a great leader to be a hero. Great leaders make great
From his position, he couldn’t connect, so he sat on a small rock out in the open, making one last attempt. He succeeded, but it cost him his life.” (Schneider 2016, 2) I believe that heroic act displays the attribute leads others, due to the fact that LT Murphy risked his own life to call higher command to request support to try and save his
While we may often look up to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Kin Kardashian, real heroes exhibit more selfless qualities that reach beyond that of a self-fulfilling celebrity. In many ways, real heroes stand strong with their beliefs possess confidence and patience. Furthermore, real heroes are persistent, devoted and most of all real heroes are revolutionary and break boundaries. As a matter of fact, Jackie Robinson is one of my personal heroes because he set in motion the change of boundaries for major league sports. Further, he is a hero who was born to start a revolution in the major league sports industry.
Parents encourage their children to keep their pride high and love everything they do, never give up so quickly because things seem to get rough in life. That's a hero to
A Hero for the Ages. Philip Zimbardo, a psychologist and a professor at Stanford University once said, “To be a hero is when you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice. Heroes always take risks. Heroes always are deviant. Heroes always do something that most people don’t.”
Aphorism, adage, dictum, moral, life lesson: in other terms, things of which this paper will be of. This is a paper about a tale of true sacrifice and courage. Many stories have elaborate life lessons, and Homer’s epic tale The Odyssey is no exception. This paper will amalgamate the ones felt to be most important.
The Odyssey, written by Homer, is one of the most famous examples of a fictional epic poem. The Odyssey is one of Homer's most famous works. It tells the story of a man named Odysseus, and Odysseus recalls his story to Alcinous, a king who has taken Odysseus into his home. This tale is an example of bravery, great loss, selflessness, and heroism. It is also the result of having a close relationship with the gods.
Jarod Kintz said “I want to remember our fallen heroes. And after I’ve spent a day remembering them, I want to extend my arm and help them up.” When heroes treat others with care and love, others will want to follow their path out of inspiration and mutual respect. This kind of influence spreads throughout society, and sets an example for the world. Since heroism is defined as someone who is part of a certain group or works for a certain purpose, one would instead define heroism as someone who makes a positive impact on other people.
Throughout the poem of the Iliad, Homer does an excellent job portraying the various sacrifices that the gods requested at the expense of the heroes. In Greek mythology, there are many instances where heroes had to sacrifice their beloved things to gods and goddesses because it was respectful and appeased them. In most cases, it is almost mandatory because they are usually punished by the god until they sacrifice something. On the other hand, Homer shows many representations of heroes sacrificing everything to gain immortal glory and be favored by other gods. In the Iliad, the motif of sacrifice permeates the epic poem as Achilles and Apollo exemplify different variations of respect to show their humanity and glory.
Superman, Batman, Police Officer, Firefighters, United States military members and even ordinary people, are modern day heroes with stories that most adults and children have heard of. Many have not heard of the original hero, Beowulf, from around the 7th Century CE, more to come later. (Fioritino) Heroes are introduced to an individual at a young age, usually in the form of a fictional character from a story. As we get older however, the insights of their hero’s change. Maintaining this tradition of choosing a hero becomes easier when you know where it all started.
A hero is anyone who makes the right decision to sacrifice for a person in need. For example, without heroes like firemen, wildfires and house fires would spread across the nation, costing lives and loss of worldly possessions. Firemen stand strong, risk themselves, and protect all for the well-being, safety of others, and personal property. In addition,
Although an individual may be caring, it is their actions that make them a hero. A hero is an individual whose actions reflects the kindness of their heart. A hero is an individual who adjusts their life to help others like parents, friends, and siblings. According to the song "Heroes" by Paul
Chris kyle is a hero because he saved lives and he served in our country and killed over 160 people to defend our country. He has saved many fellow troops during battle. Kyle has also survived an IED (Improvised explosive device) while trying to save lives. He has also earned many medals (2 silver stars and 5 bronze stars). He might earn the medal of honor.
Heroes have resurfaced countless times throughout history in literature, hearsay, and the oral tradition. Although they might have different adventures and adversaries, heroes almost always share two defining characteristics. Typically, heroes that exist in literature must be willing to sacrifice something special in order to achieve the greater good, and they must end up victorious by defeating the antagonist or succeed in their quests, missions, and objectives. The victory should result from the defeat of a dastardly villain or occur despite formidable odds. Odysseus, the hero in the Odyssey, provides an excellent classical example.
A hero is one that is on a quest, which in this case is to find help and shelter for his fellow crewmembers. Holding the title captain, he is automatically looked to as the leader and decision maker on what is to be done. However, being the captain is not what makes him the hero but the way his thought and decisions automatically goes to his crewmembers first rather than himself. “The hurt captain spoke always in a low voice and calmly; but could never command a more ready and swiftly obedient crew than the motely three of the dinghy” (Crane 129). Even when injured, the captain still led his crew not allowing anything to inhibit his quest, whether it was the indecision of his crewmembers, or the constant misfortunes from Mother Nature.
To me, a hero is someone who gives everything they have to assure the happiness of others and a hero is also someone who gives up his life or her life so someone else could live. In all honesty, a hero isn’t really what we think a “hero” is based on definitions and what the movies or even comic books have told us. Anyone can be
