In the subsequent text, I will be discussing the perspectives from two dissimilar discourse communities; an online subscription discourse community and one that is essentially academic based. I will additionally express my opinions regarding these discourse communities, how I think I am connected to them and the manner in which I can be more beneficial to them. According to the article “Protect desert land by bill – or my monument designation’’ by the editorial board for the SBSUN, Dianne Feinstein has presented a nice method …show more content…
While in his visit to the United States, Pop Francis made a speech to Congress. Perhaps he could show American lawmakers a thing or two regarding what a fresh tone and the tiniest tolerance on policy can do for an individual’s fame. There was the garboil regarding the presidential candidate Ben Carson, indicating that Muslims ought to never be elected to the White House (The Editorial Board 1). Then there were politicians lining up to receive the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Washington, D.C or blankly not to. It could be summed up that each individual, both conservatives, and liberals, desire religion mashed up in politics provided it is their religion. Indeed, it is hypocrisy, in politics, regarding religion. The initial papal visit to the United States in the current decade is advantageous for Obama. It is additionally beneficial for Republicans. Nonetheless, the pope’s visit to Washington, Philadelphia, and New York may chasten the country’s leaders also. Pope Francis is favorably considered by sixty-four percent of Americans, and unfavorably by a mere ten percent (The Editorial Board 1). Whatsoever Pope Francis shares this week, it probably will comfort most Catholics and unsettle most office-holders. To the degree that he will have part of the political leaders to be more
(Baylor University). This quote sheds light to how the increase of politics in churches can poorly affect the connotation of the who believe in the same God and religious practices as another. Through the withholding of civil rights and liberties there is division amongst many churches all over the world. Evangelicals whether they be white or black often change their name because of the racist and evil ideologies that are associated with
For me, the logos, pathos and ethos perspective of joining a discourse community I had been part of, taught me a lesson about interpersonal skills, organizational systems and professionalism. My aim of this paper is to share my experience of joining Chitwan Pharmacy Student Association (CPSA) via use of rhetorical skills that we have discussed in class of English 1301.
President Washington also spoke on Religion and Morality. He stated “Where is the security for property, for the reputation for life. In a sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice?” He also stated that “Morality is necessary spring of popular government and morality is obtainable without religion.” President Washington asked the American people to look beyond any slight different between religion, manners, habits and political principles and place their independence and liberty above all
Moore quotes Mark Twain, “Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. … He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself, and cuts his throat if his theology isn’t straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother’s path to happiness and heaven.” Listing various events Moore shows how history has come to have a relationship with the term “religious”.
Throughout American history, religion has limited the people’s rights. Some states did not have religious freedom. People couldn’t hold office because of their religion. For example, in 1783 in Philadelphia, Jews couldn’t be a member of the general assembly in Philadelphia because they had to acknowledge “the scriptures of the old and new Testament to be given by divine inspiration” (Petition of the Philadelphia Synagogue to Council of Censors of Philadelphia). This religious condition to become a member of the general assembly in Philadelphia was unjust and discriminatory for Jews.
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,
Finding Justification for Injustice What politician hasn’t used religion as an unwavering piece of justification in an argument? All throughout history, politicians have used religion countless times to justify behavior or simply to avoid unflattering questions. Authors and characters are guilty of this as well. “The Crucible” and “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” include evidence that individuals use religion as justification to prey on other’s fears and insecurities, to use as evidence to explain an occurrence or phenomenon, or to pass judgement on another person because Miller wishes to shed light on the manipulation of ideas and religion, and Edwards wishes to persuade his audience through these tactics.
Being Thrown into a Discourse Community As time passes, the human race goes through a process of automatically putting themselves into groups that we think may suit us best. Theres so called groups are portrayed as discourse communities. John Swales (1990), an analyst of written communication, claimed that “discourse communities [are] groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. This means that we generally go where we feel most comfortable, where others like us have the same goals and mindsets alike.
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
Placing the 10 commandments placed in a courthouse to be seen as a threat to other different religions, and favoritism done by the government. We live in a society where there will be diversity. A place where there will be different beliefs and a variety of different critical thinking skills. We have to be open-minded and think of others as well. Concluding that in the case of McCreary v. ACLU of Kentucky (2005) the court justified that it is unconstitutional to display religious beliefs in political offices.
Creations, like most things in life, are improvable. Ideas and theories are always evolving into different ideas or more sophisticated ones. Discourse communities is a term that has been debated over the years. Three of those debaters are James Paul Gee, James P. Porter, and John Swales. In this essay I will analyze what each of these writers see as the definition of a discourse community while comparing specific points that each of them have regarding their personal view on the subject.
This is both good, and bad, it really just depends on the issue. Politics should definitely consider the word of God while making important decisions for our nation. However the government should not decide important roles for the church. Leave decisions to the church and businesses that support the church.
“I believe in a president whose religious views are his own private affair, neither imposed by him upon the nation, or imposed by the nation upon him as a condition to holding that office”(JFK). He didn’t impose his religion, he kept it separate from job as
Precisely, she declared, “The church cannot be defiled by receiving a bigamist into its membership” (Oskison 1040). As a result, from Miss Evans’ behavior, Oskison is able to disseminate America’s true character. Unlike others, he does not excuse or ignore America’s image, instead he confronts
“Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice, it means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it.” ― G.K. Chesterton Many occasions in the United States history have shown that religion has caused many controversial questions. These questions have brought the American Justice System to a running halt, leading society to begin to ponder about the importance of freedom of religion, true meanings of the free exercise and establishment clause, and if there should be limitations imposed on the free exercise of one’s religious beliefs.
