As a woman, Alexandra Bergson is an unusual type. She is strong in a very different way, but it makes for a phenomenal pioneer. At the beginning of the novel, Cather defines a pioneer right out, “A pioneer should have imagination, should be able to enjoy the idea of things more than the things themselves”. (31-32). Based on that alone, and Alexandra’s development throughout the novel, she absolutely embodies a pioneer emotionally, mentally and perhaps even physically.

Miss Adela Strangeworth, a character in the short story “A Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, is a 71 year old who is thought by the townsfolk as a sweet puny lady but she is nothing but that. Because of the way Miss Strangeworth is, all horrible actions must have a consequence and she finds out the truth of that statement when her vintage old self turns into the evil lady that no one has seen before, and she realizes that she wants more control than she has, basically a god complex.

The characters in this book are Lucy (main character), Sarah, Zach, Gray, Miranda, Leo, and Soledad. My favorite character of the book is Lucy Scarborough, because her character overcomes many tasks, and she shows her strength and compassion throughout the story. The author unfolds the story by starting from the beginning of Lucy’s fate. Miranda Lucy’s biological mother fell into insanity when Lucy was born due to a curse that runs through Lucy’s family that only her and her foster parents know about.
