The Scientific Method Sociologists make use of tried and true methods of research, such as experiments, surveys, and field research. But humans and their social interactions are so diverse that they can seem impossible to chart or explain. It might seem that science is about discoveries and chemical reactions or about proving ideas right or wrong rather than about exploring the nuances of human behavior. Descriptive method uses case studies, naturalistic observations, and surveys. A case study usually focuses on an individual or a small group of individuals. A naturalistic observation usually focuses on a larger group of individuals in a natural environment. A survey is used to ask a larger group of individuals’ questions about attitudes and behavior.

A naturalistic observation is when someone is observing people or animals in a natural environment or set. A naturalistic observation would be good to use when you observing people in a a cafeteria. For example under appropriate conditions, you can observe the amount of people who naturally order healthy food verses unhealthy food. Naturalistic observation are good only if you take the time to observe people in their natural environments.

The first contrast between the articles is in Luebke’s article in which he mentions that there is a maldistribution of students and their careers. He claims that “The sad fact is that for every student in business, engineering, or a pre-professional program, there are others in less marketable areas” (Luebke, 1). Luebke states that very few people are in educational programs that will actually bring practical benefits to the country. As opposed to the other students who are majoring in field’s that will be difficult to become employed in. To back Luebke’s claim, he argues that “areas such as art history, psychology, and history keep generating graduates who have difficulty finding gainful employment” (Leubke, 1).

Throughout our time in school the term Scientific Method has been used frequently. It was almost a universal term in all classes but it usually pertained to conducting some type of research. As illustrated in basic form the scientific method follows a series of steps as in purpose, research, hypothesis, experiment, analysis and conclusion. Although these steps are commonly remembered the scientific method is further explored by other steps and an important one is the scientific theory.

Observation is viewing something interesting and wondering about it. The questions about the observation are what the experiment will be based on. Scientific method is a tool that scientist use to solve real world problems, or to gain an understanding of a paticular subject and or idea. A testable hypothesis is the start of the whole process, and requires a general question to be made using who, what, when, where, and why to solve it. After the tested hypothesis is complete, we most likely will have data, and we need to organize that data to make it comprehensible. Once the data has been processed, we move to peer review. Each of these is a crucial part of the scientific method, and heres why.
I strongly agree with Poppers’ views of scientific method; firstly, deduction can provide certainty to scientific theory and allow us to accept hypothesis, law and theory as provisionally approved until it is falsified by the evidence; secondly, I believe imagination is the factor that infuses the development of science knowledge because curiosity is generally enhanced by imagination and personal perception. However, I think we should not ignore induction. In my view, induction together with deduction can be used to generate scientific knowledge. From my opinion, Science is a set of knowledge that explains factors contributing to our functional universe; scientific theories build upon past knowledge and accumulate over period of time. Scientific method is the way in which science knowledge is achieved and justified.
