Arming Teachers Is Not The Solution To Stop School Shootings It’s only been about 12 weeks in 2018 and there have been 17 school shootings where students and teachers were killed or injured. This basically means that there’s a shooting every week. Of shootings perpetrated by minors at primary and secondary schools and for which the source of the firearm was known, more than half of the kids obtained the gun at home likely because an adult did not store it locked and unloaded. In all, these incidents resulted in 59 deaths and 124 non-fatal gunshot injuries. Because of all these school shootings, there have been people saying that teachers should protect their students, but in teachers’ contract, they didn’t sign up to do that. Teachers should not be allowed to carry weapons on school campuses because students will feel uncomfortable, it would be expensive for teachers and will require training and students could find the gun and start a shooting. …show more content…
If students completely trust their teachers, they may be comforted but many students rarely feel that level of comfort with every teacher in the building (Singer). This proves that not all students get along with every teacher there is in their school, there’s many that don’t even talk to their teachers at all. When you have two people shooting at each other, bystanders get caught in the crossfire. This is not a good environment for children (Singer). This means that students could accidently get in the middle of the two people that have a gun and there’s a possibility that the student can get injured. Many students already feel unsafe thinking that there will be a gun in their
If we were to arm teachers, it would make it much more challenging for a school shooter to succeed in killing innocent children. Kasey Hansen is a special needs instructor, and she one among many teachers who conceal carry at school. “I never really thought about it before Sandy Hook,” Hansen said. “It just killed me. It’s something personal when you mess with students or children.
I undoubtedly believe that teachers in Australia should not be allowed to carry guns at school. I do not believe the public should have the rights to guns in Australia, only the high and certain members of the police force and the Australian defence force should be allowed access to guns only when on active duty. Even though I don't think teachers should be allowed to have or carry firearms anywhere, I do believe everyone should be able to defend him or her selves. Teachers should be allowed to carry guns to defend and protect themselves and their students and so that they can take immediate action against oncoming threats or violence. On the other hand, teachers carrying guns could just make it more accessible to reach firearms and it could just
“Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun” by Steve Siebold delivers the message about why teachers should be armed with guns. Primarily he thinks that shooters will be less motivated to try to attack a school that is able to defend itself against the gunman. He also goes on to say that “Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive isn’t good enough.” He gives us the idea that we need to take action against these shooters and potentially end school shootings once and for all.
Also, guns could accidentally go off if it is in the student backpack and it dropped and could hurt someone. According to Admiral William H. McRaven a Texas Chancellor, “We survivors do not think that it is a good idea to have guns on campus. There is no evidence that a bill like SB 11 would do anything to stop a mass shooting, but SB 11 would make the average day on campus more dangerous in an environment where students are dealing with failing grades, alcohol abuse, relationship problems” (McRaven). People should think about the future on how many people lives are taken because of guns on campus and should decrease the
Teachers should not be armed in schools because the could not handle a real situation, and the liability is too much of a risk. To elaborate, it is widely agreed that a student’s well-being is a teacher’s concern. For six to eight hours every day for 5 days a week, the life of the student is in the teacher’s hands. However, a teacher has never been expected to arm themself to protect a student until now.
Elementary school teachers should be licensed to carry firearms in the classroom due to the rising yearly school shooting instances. Classrooms are becoming less and less safe every year
Should teachers be allowed to possess guns during school hours? Teachers should be able to possess guns during school hours because the teacher could protect the students, be able to prevent school shootings, and neutralize other threats. ¨Adam could not handle his constant bullying anymore, he felt as if he would do anything to end his struggle. Adam dug into his backpack and felt the handle of the gun he took from his father's drawer that morning.
Why Should teachers be able to carry a gun. Reason #1 for teachers being able to carry a gun, protection of students. Imagine being a parent in this day and age were you have to worry about your child going to what was a safe environment in the parents age. What is now a risk for a mentally ill and damaged individual to kill as many innocent people as possible.
What a lot of people do not take into consideration is that the teachers must go through training and have to be liable to the responsibilities they are taking once they have a concealed carry weapon. Arming teachers could help lower the number of school shootings because the reaction times will be much faster, and it will add a bit of security to the children. Arming teachers will help lower the number of school shootings. If teachers are liable and are fine with carrying concealed weapons in schools, they would be able to respond to the site of the shooting much faster than it would be waiting for the police to arrive. Apart from having faster reaction times to the shooting, arming teachers will also add extra security to many students.
For many years, guns were used to protect the citizens within the society as a whole. Some people believe that college campuses are unsafe and that students should carry concealed weapons to defend themselves while they are on campus just to be safe and armed while others disagree. Imagine a student or teacher was allowed to bring a gun on campus. Now imagine what would happen if that student or teacher were having a bad day or had a major argument with someone. The possibility base off the situation could cause something disastrous that is quite real.
Would it be effective to arm teachers in a school and is it possible it would reduce the chance of a school shooting such as Columbine? Arming a teacher may increase the response time for an emergency in a rural school district and would be able to provide safety. Although it can provide safety, it may be still possible that allowing teachers to hold a weapon in school grounds will also cause many risks and be very dangerous to the students or faculty in a school. In an arming teachers program, the teacher will go through 35 hours of training and will be able to maintain five classroom hours a day to gain the knowledge of holding a weapon and be certified. A teacher will be selected and unknown to others in a school district to maintain safety to their identity and safety to the students in the classroom.
Not all educators understand the basics of gun safety. Without this proper knowledge, many people can get severely injured or put others in harm. If all teachers wanted to carry a gun, they would go through a lot of classes and it would cost a lot of money. They could become the target of a school shooter and put students at risk for them coming into their classroom. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, is saying no to arming
Unlike professional shooters, teachers must undergo a series of training in order to obtain a gun. Without the proper protection and training, which was not included in the resolution, would guarantee that the weapons would fall under the wrong hands of the students. Everytown Research states, “Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.” The resolution states that all teachers would be armed, but, if the teachers were to be armed, the teachers would traumatize the students mentally away from them. Hamby, a research professor in the department of education states, “ ...the links between exposure to weapons violence and negative outcomes of trauma in kids (including depression, anxiety and aggression).
Since 2012 there have been around 170 school shootings around the US. December 14 was the massacre of 20 children ranging from the age of 7-8. Many of the teachers on campus did not have a weapon with them and
There negatives for teachers having guns at school include: students getting the gun, extensive training for the teachers - which would cost money, students frightened to learn, and what would happen if the approved teacher with the gun is not there. There should be no need for teachers to
