Tom Buchanan is a thirty-years-old man who attended Yale with Nick, graduating in 1915. The wealth of his family allowed him to spend money carelessly, causing him not to worry about his financial stability throughout his life. He traveled to places like France with his wife Daisy and bought horses to play Polo for a day, without thinking twice about it. Gatsby, on the other hand, is assumed to be a graduate from Oxford. He did not come from old money; he was actually not always a wealthy man. He works for everything he has truly making himself a self-made man. For this reason he is portrayed to be a humble person, knowing the struggle of not having any money. Tom is not humble at all; I would say he is arrogant and flashy. Tom does not seem to care about anyone’s feelings but his own. He has a mistress named Myrtle disregarding the fact that he has a family and a wife. Even though he seems to be unhappy with Daisy, he refuses to let anyone have her. Myrtle is not able to …show more content…
Gatsby and Tom both try to impress Daisy with their wealth. I believe the only reason Daisy stays with Tom is because he is wealthy, even though she too does not seem to be happy with their relationship. The reason Gatsby worked so hard to become wealthy was because Daisy refused to be with him when he was poor. Without money I do not think either of them would have the attention of Daisy. Both men being wealthy also allows them to be flashy. Gatsby is flashy by the parties he throws, this allows people to come into his home and see all his goods. Tom is flashy in the sense he likes people knowing about his achievements, showing all his trophies to Nick. They both use other characters in the book for their own needs. Tom is using Myrtle to help him get away from reality. He is seeing her because he does not seem to enjoy his life at home with Daisy. Gatsby however uses both Nick and Jordan to get closer to
In the book Gatsby, a poor, hard-working man at the time, had fallen in love with Daisy, a careless, money-hungry woman. They met when they were younger instantly getting attached, Gatsby lying about his background saying he was wealthy, but when he left for war Daisy found another man named Tom Buchanan. Buchanan was very wealthy and was approved by Daisy’s parents, so they married. Long story short, Gatsby had given
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” Gatsby and Tom are different, but one of the things they have in common is Daisy; they both want to protect her yet they do it differently, and they both lie to her about different things. One of the things that Tom and Gatsby have in common is that they both to protect Daisy. On page 155 of “The Great Gatsby” Fitzgerald wrote “He couldn’t possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do. ”(This is Nick when he was thinking about Gatsby.). This shows that Gatsby is worried about her and wants to protect her.
He acts as if he is a father and is entitled to tell others how they should act. Tom only thinks about himself and how his wealth allows him to feel superior to those around him. Gatsby is a mysterious man who is blindly in love with Daisy. The only thing he cares about is for Daisy to come to him. He spent the past 5 years making money to show that he worthy of her and that he can be a wealthy man as well.
“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, exposes the American Society during the 1920’s. The author displays many heroes and villain throughout the book. The characters in the novel are mostly mixtures of good and evil. Although the book does not clearly delineate the villains or heroes, there is one character who tends to stand out as a villain known as Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan is a major character in the book.
Gatsby manipulates Nick and Jordan just to try to win over Daisy. Which is selfish of him because she now has a husband and daughter. Gatsby does it all in the name of love. Gatsby truly believes that he can give Daisy the life she wants now that he’s successful and rich and wants her to be happy. While even though Tom is using Myrtle as his mistress in a way he still protects Daisy.
Jay Gatsby was obsessed with Tom’s wife Daisy. Before Jay went to war and Tom met Daisy Jay and Daisy dated and intended on getting married. Sadly Jay was out of the country longer than expected and Daisy met and married Tom Buchanan. If Tom loses all of his money he will be nothing. Tom may have gone to a good college but he has no workplace experience and his polo career isn't going to be going anywhere due to his body size and his skill.
Both tom Buchanan and George Wilson are two vastly different people but are alike in the most unusual ways. They are the only two characters in the book to use violence; both say they “love” Myrtle and both fight for their women only when they are about to lose them. That is where the similarities cease. Tom is the man who cheats on his wife daisy, with George 's wife Myrtle, and then proceeds to slap her when she would not stop speaking Daisy 's name. George, on the other hand, is a passionate and faithful husband to Myrtle and is crushed to learn that she was cheating on him so much so that he assassinates Gatsby whom he thinks was cheating with myrtle and murdered to get rid of the evidence of his adultery.
Gatsby fails to incorporate the details of his rise to the top through the world of bootlegging. Tom is the same as Gatsby because he openly lies and deceives people in The Great Gatsby. One example is at the beginning of the novel when Tom is having an affair with Myrtle. Tom was not completely truthful with Daisy about his affair and kept a separate apartment for secretive independence. Not only does Tom, deceive his wife he deceives his mistress, Myrtle.
While Tom Buchanan comes from a family with a very good amount of money since Tom was born, he has been a wealthy man. both of them do shady deals that is one of the ways in which gatsby and tom fill their pockets with more money with illicit deals the only thing that gatsby and tom are different is that gatsby had to work since he was a teenager to get the fortune that he had and Tom never had to worry about working since the family is very well positioned in an economically. They also get whatever they want no matter what and how they get it. They don't care if it is illegal, they alway get
Certainly not for a common swindler who'd have to steal the ring he put on her finger" (Fitzgerald 133). Tom knows Daisy will choose comfort and security of money over real love. Daisy views Gatsby as her past without tom. Gatsby's wealth was always a dream while Tom's wealth was always reality. Daisy being with Tom will secure her a spot in the famous and respected "old money" society whereas her being with Gatsby she will be surround by people like him with "new money" who wants to be accepted by those with "old money".
In Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, there are two characters by the names of Tom Buchanan and George Wilson. Throughout the book, these two particular characters seem to be very different from each other in nearly every way. However, it becomes clear as the story continues that they share some ideas and attitudes in common. Specifically, Tom and George were noteworthy in the way they felt about women, the methods by which they conveyed violence, and how they responded to their wives cheating on them.
It was ironic that even Nick, a person who was “inclined to reserve all judgment” (Fitzgerald 1), was able to see how money had made Tom and Daisy careless and lazy. Nick also notices that Daisy and Tom had disappeared right after Gatsby’s death. Daisy and Tom were wealthy enough to move out of Long Island, while they made everyone else solve the problem that they had left behind. It is easy for rich people to become weak and only focus on
Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan are two very wealthy men fighting over the same women, yet these two enemies aren’t that much different from one another. Tom has come from a wealthy family and has not had to work hard in life to enjoy its luxuries. At Yale he was a very successful athlete and excelled in almost
“And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time” (Fitzgerald 138). These words, spoken by Tom Buchanan in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby, exemplify the personality traits that are omnipresent throughout the novel. Tom is Daisy Buchanan’s husband whom she marries after her first love, Jay Gatsby, leaves for the war.
Tom also has a big connection with Nick as confides in him to keep Myrtle a secret. With Myrtle as a lover and uses her for his pleasure and enjoyment but this soon creates drama with George Wilson. His involvement with Myrtle is a secret that Nick knows about but Daisy doesn’t know anything about Myrtle which
