Domestic Violence is often defined as the recurring pattern of behaviour in an intimate relationship that is used in order to control, maintain or gain power over a partner; this includes physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse (Davies 2008, p. 1; Department of social services 2015 & Australian Bureau of statistics 2013). The principal purpose of this essay is to offer a range of sociological explanation that justifies why domestic violence is happening. Social conflict and symbolic interactionism are the two theories that have been explored. The paper argues that micro level analysis offers a deeper understanding of the motivation behind domestic violence, compared to a macro level one. The study also contains recommendations that …show more content…
2013, p. 851; Lawson 2012, p. 579; Lawson 2012, p.572 & Conflict theory 2014) and symbolic interactionism theory (Handberg et al. 2015, p. 1023; Dennis & Martin 2005, p. 207; Benzies & Allen 2001, p.543 & Symbolic interactionism 2001).As domestic violence is defined as an issue relating to power and control, conflict theory justifies this by stating that conflicts arise in groups due to unequal power distribution where the powerful group aims at maintain their control over the others (Conflict theory 2014). The conflict theory is often used in the study of inequality in a variety of areas for example gender, sexuality, race (Conflict theory 2014 & Furze et al. 2014, p. 11). It also suggests that by eliminating the privileges of the powerful population, welfare of all humans will increase (Furze et al. 2014, p. …show more content…

Another important aspect of domestic violence that lacks attention is its dynamics thus there needs to be more training as all levels of the education system as this is where most of the socialisation peaks, as education is a proactive way of reducing risk rather than arresting which is reactive ( Davies 2008,
Intimate Partner Violence Fatalities: Prevention and Intervention Intimate partner violence is considered the most life-threatening and distressing family issue on a societal platform (Hamilton, Jaffe, & Campbell, 2013). The term family is utilized loosely as familial depictions vary, but to be certain the family has two partners that can be diversified roles and gender. By definition intimate partner violence illustrates a pattern of behaviors that are deliberate and intended to gain power and control over another person (Hamilton, Jaffe, & Campbell, 2013). Intimate partner violence does not need to be necessarily violent actions, but can be verbal threats, isolation, neglect, and disempowering tactics. The series of behaviors and violence can hastily escalate and the probability of homicide increases in those relationship dynamics.
Although Cherie’s volatile relationship has not erupted into physical violence, Tyrone’s threatening behavior could easily escalate from controlling and intimidating behavior to outright domestic violence, which adds another crisis component to this case. As previously mentioned, Cherie revealed that Tyrone belittles and controls her. She also said Tyrone acts excessively jealous, limits her telephone usage and access to money and credit cards. These characteristics are often mentioned when women in domestic violence shelters describe their mate (James & Gilliland, 2013, p.302).
This article can work hand in hand with Relationships Australia, as Relationships Australia provide their clients with the emotional support to work through there issues with domestic violence and the article shows them an option to fight back against the abuse in the eyes of the law (Domestic Violence (family protection) Amendment Act 1992, 1993, p.

The official statistics can be used to educate about the prevalence and immorality of committing domestic abuse crimes. As the message continues to resonate through society that violence is unacceptable, younger generations are more likely to mature without considering physical abuse as an option to relieve anger. (Mouzos and Makkai, 2004) Men who supported gender equality showed far lower levels of violence than those who believed in the ‘traditional gender roles’. Likewise, women who were more ‘traditional’ were also less likely to report incidents of domestic violence.
Spousal Abuse People often turn away from issues that do not affect them, but this only lets the issue grow further until there is nothing left to do but deal with it. This could be why domestic violence has been taking place for centuries now. One issue that comes with domestic violence is spousal abuse- a problem that only seems to be getting worse, with ten million victims being beaten by an intimate partner each year (“Domestic Violence”). Although spousal abuse seems to be an ongoing issue in the United States, efforts are being made at both national and local levels to suppress the violence.
“Sexual, racial, gender violence and other forms of discrimination and violence in a culture cannot be eliminated without changing culture.” - Charlotte Bunch. Domestic abuse is a hostile dispute involving the use of violence among household or family members. It is a universal phenomenon that occurs in all races, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, occupations, and genders (“What is Domestic Violence?”).
In chapter 11, Ending Violence discusses how the perpetuation of violence among men, women and children is often viewed as a natural part of the domestic roles in a family. This chapter was of great interest to me because I have always questioned why violence occurs. I like the concept that hooks brought to the subject of patriarchal violence, that is that many times women are perpetrators of violence just as equally as male. Many women choose to discipline their children with physical or psychological violence. They believe that if they can have control of what one individual does it gives them the power to feel superior.
To better understand the cause of intimate violence will help to come up will help come up with a better solution on solving this problem. There are various theories that have come up to explain the main causes of domestic violence, some include; learned helplessness theory, Intergenerational Transmission Theory, Social–Psychological Model and the feminist theory. All of these theories have tried to illustrate the causes of domestic violence. In this paper, I will target my writing on the feminist theory where it emphasizes power and gender inequalities in relationships. The theory focuses on how societal messages that makes it alright for a male to use aggression and violence, and the gender roles that dictate how women and men should act in their relationships
The Good and the Bad Victims of domestic violence are not at fault for the abuse that is inflicted upon them. A lot of people ask why the victim stayed in the first place, but in some cases the answer is not always so simple. According to Why Do Abuse Victims Stay, “We often put ourselves in the place of the victims and imagine ourselves leaving at the first signs of abuse. But breaking free of abuse is not simply a matter of walking out the door. Leaving is a process.”
Domestic violence has been around for many years. Domestic violence however wasn’t considered a major problem or crime until the highly publicized court case in 1972 of Ruth Bunnell. Bunnell was killed by her husband after the police failed to intervene. In the years before Bunnells death, since the police failed to intervene even though Bunnell had called them twenty nine times prior to her death about her husband’s abuse of her and her daughters Bunnell was eventually killed by her husband. The police department was sued because of this and the suing party won.
Many women are experiencing controlling and violent environment which should be about intimacy, love and care. In relation to this social justice issue, domestic violence all these theories can be applied effectively to assist in a practitioner’s work. Psychodynamic is a micro leveled practice involving more individualized work investigating the user’s unconscious behaviors and mental processors. Systems theory focuses on keeping a balanced equilibrium with marriage counselling and other forms of community assistance to help the user adapt to their environment. The critical perspective, feminist theory, works alongside the user in order to help identify social injustices and assists to empower and educate them.
With the male figure typically holding the most power within the family unit, it is said that this power difference can sometimes lead to issues of domestic violence and abuse (Chibucos, Leite & Weis, 2005). Due to social norms and society, conflict theory tends to focus on the “traditional nuclear family” and one’s social roles placed upon mothers and fathers. Conflict theory suggests that any major changes to the family unit or family roles of the mother and father can cause chaos and cause intimate partner
Domestic violence is a representation of Judith Butler’s ‘Gender as a Performance’ theory because it embodies the structured power relation amongst genders and how this power influences both individuals involved. The act of domestic violence in heterosexual relationships adversely enforces the identities in which males and females categorize themselves into, based on their gender performance. Domestic violence can be defined as a series of behaviours which are used to assert control over a partner in an intimate relationship (McFeely, Lombard, Burman, Whiting, & McGowan, 2013). Domestic violence is a universally known phenomenon that impacts
