A Stargirl Comes to Earth
“She was a home-schooler gone amok.” “She was an alien.” These are just a few of the descriptions given to Jerry Spinelli’s Star Girl. The New York Times bestseller Stargirl tells the tale of a peculiar teenage girl. Spinelli uses his book to share the overall message of nonconformity and finding ones true happiness.
The novel is set in Mica, a fictional town in Arizona. Star Girl (Susan) is the main character; not very surprising considering her name is in the title. Susan recently moved and is a new student at Mica High School. She is mysterious, and does very out-of-the-box things, such as singing to people, and putting a vase with flowers on her desk every morning during homeroom.

Throughout the book, Leo, who clearly identifies himself as a Mica High Student, an Arizonian, and an American, tries to figure out Star Girl.
“We wanted to define her, to wrap her up as we did each other, but we could not seem to get past "weird" and "strange" and "goofy." Her ways knocked us off balance. ”
Star Girl is…herself. She is free of labels and does what she pleases. Her constant kindness is because she does not live in fear of what people think. Unlike Star Girl, Leo can describe himself in very few words. At one point in the book, he asks Star Girl to try and fit in because he doesn’t want to be made fun of for being her friend.
“Because nobody likes you, I said. That’s why. Nobody likes you.”
“Nobody?” She said. Her eyes covered me like the sky. “Nobody?”
This kills Star Girl. By telling her that, Star Girl decides to become normal again. She goes back to her birth given name, Susan. As Susan, she begins dressing like everyone, talking like everyone, and gives up the things that make her special. After a week, she is not happy, and goes back to whom she really is: Star

She is obviously the favorite, but she also takes the whole process seriously.

Guy Montag and Tris Prior are two dystopian protagonists who feel trapped in their own world while questioning their governments. The two protagonists felt that something is wrong and soon help the audience recognize the negative aspects of their societies. Guy Montag lives in a bureaucratically controlled society where citizens experience censorship from all books. Montag likes most citizens never thought about the impact of books on someone life.

His masculinity is hindered when the three girls are kicked out and must feel like “their unsuspected hero” to them by quitting his job. She was never accepted for who she was and this made her do things, sometimes extreme to help out her family. She knew she would never fit in, and her actions proved just that.
