Ethics Final Paper
Do not Conform to “Society”
One Ethical concern in the reading that caught my attention is in part IV in the book Citizen by Claudia Rankine. This part talks about “your” feelings, memory, and breathing. Rankine left this in the book to show the readers that society is pressuring people of color to “move on” from their problems. Rankine might be pointing out that the person who is speaking (which is you) is advised by the “world” against doing anything about the suffering it brings to some, but because ‘the world” is trying to apply a deferent kind of utilitarian society that tells the people that if they take things to heart then you are not following the society’s universal rules. “The world” that Rankine

Society is trying to minimize and encourage people to minimize the suffering it brings to people of color. However, the society is white-dominated, this shows that the society favors white people over people of color because it gives them special treatment. This act is called being partial and that means to show favor or preference to one person over another. However, a person in a society has every right that the society gives them. To have that right is to have something which society has to defend them in the possession of. People may claim general utility if they are questioned on their rights. Our society does not accept the responsibilities that are related to the protection of everyone in society. People of color deserve all of those rights too under the greatest happiness …show more content…
This shows people of color that they need to change to make sure white people are happy. Epictetus talks about self-reflection in his handbook, and he also implies we should practice self-improvement. He implies that because he wants us to remind ourselves of what is in our power and what is not. When we remind ourselves what we are not able to do, we self-reflect and improve our actions on what we learned. They learn to go around what is not in their power. This is a good strategy for self-improvement and knowing your limits mentally and physically, however I see this happening to people of color unintentionally or forcefully done. People of color are reminded everyday by their interactions with white people that the white people have more power over them. People of color unintentionally conform to society’s universal rules because that is what they live in and interact with on a daily basis. Those universal rules are made by white people. It could be that they think that those rules are the norm and they are supposed to follow them without a second thought that they are being suppressed from whites. The other possibility could be that they are forced to conform to society because of laws and majority rule. The more people in society that think in a certain way will get support from others to make sure
The book I read was, “The Blood of Emmett Till” by Timothy B. Tyson. This book is about a 14 year-old boy named Emmett who went to Mississippi to spend time with his family, but ended up making a mistake that cost him his life. I’m going to talk about one big idea I found in the book, which also relates to, “Night” by Elie Wiesel. The big idea I found was that too much power and the fear of losing power can corrupt the mind.
Every individual is born with a specific culture and color. Respecting each and every person is society’s duty. Society fails in doing so by treating each individual based on their color. Society has two ways to see a person and that is black and white. Whites are given the higher position and well treatment whereas blacks are treated in an opposite way than whites.
Every country on this beautiful sphere that we call earth has its own view on society. All countries around the world views America as being the land of the free and the land of being able to express yourself, but their just looking through a microscope .Whether those countries know it or not America has flaws. One of Americans biggest flaw is racial discrimination against people of color. When Jim Crow laws were introduced in the 1890’s it had a lasting effect on people of color socially, mentally, and their opportunities.
(Griffin 8). After acknowledging more about the circumstances of being a different skin color, comments about it can not “describe the withering horror and sadness” that is felt by those who experience such cold and spiteful words or actions (Griffin 46). If we do not make these changes together as a nation, our society will become ruined as those with
White Privilege in America Recently in America racial tension has increased because events that’s have been occurring across the country. Across the United States (U.S.) black men have been killed by law enforcement and this has sparked protest in its aftermath. The media has started to give more time to these problems so more Americans have learned about them. This has started a conversation on different social issues that include the dominant culture, social privilege in the U.S. As a young black man this has affected me directly.
White privilege is defined as “…………..” After reading this and comparing it to my life and experiences I can recognize the resemblance. As a white person in my society, I hold copious privileges and forms of power that I have not earned, but has been handed. Although, I cannot speak for my entire race when I state this, I believe that any Caucasian person living in Canada, who would be willing to take the time to stop and think about their lives, would realize that they hold power over other racial minorities. This power is acquired solely due to the fact that they have a different colour of skin.
White Privilege: Essay 1 White privilege is a systemic issue that has roots in our history as far back as the creators of our country. Searching back, we see our norms and values created into habits that have been woven into how we view and act around specific groups such as African Americans. This essay is going to explain how the average Caucasian individual experiences white privilege on a day to day basis and the solutions to insure that white privilege will stop and true equality can be handed out. This paper views the latter issues through symbolic interactionism, with supporting sub theories such as; labeling theory, looking glass self, and selective perception.
Power and privilege is one of the most common discussions regarding issues in America. It is having the freedom and opportunities more than others, and often times this power and privilege isn’t earned it is given to those unfairly. The factors that decide between those who have power and those who don’t are becoming almost unbelievable. The simple color of one’s skin, something they have no control over can put you at a disadvantage for no reason beyond the fact that your skin is not the same as someone else’s. Two examples of this lack of balanced power come from first, the article referred to in class “Song of El Sur” which discussions the lyrics of songs written by discriminated Mexicans who come to America in search of a better life, and find that the south is not the answer they were looking for.
In the world right now, there is still inequality for all. People are criticized everyday because of how they look, speak, dress, act, etc. In America, although there is people that are changing, there with always be that small group of people that won’t change their views on what they believe is right and wrong in our society. You can also see this in the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, written by author, Harper Lee. All throughout the novel, you can see how white people are superior to the African Americans that live in the same town.
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. The behavior I decided to break was dipping my fingers in the container caramel was in and then proceeded lick my fingers after doing so. I choose to break this social norm because one, the caramel sauce was really good, and two I was testing to see if my mother would say anything: normally on my birthday she lets me get away with
There are still factors that have only been erased on the surface but still play a large role in the way that people of color are treated in America, and dictate to a certain extent, compromise the “freedom” that people have. On the other hand, we have white America, who have heightened chances of achieving anything that they please. This does not apply to every white American, as there are also white Americans who are living on or below the poverty line, and much like everybody else must put in a lot of effort to reach certain heights, however they have an advantage over all other denomination of people known as “white privilege” which are the societal benefits that people who can be categorized as “white” enjoy over the rest of the population and in the end, have a higher social status. Ultimately, people of color must work harder, and face many more setbacks in their climb to success than white Americans do, which is not fair,
Racism and discrimination have been used as a powerful weapon encouraging fear or hatred if others in times of conflict and war”. Many people today and even back when Bobo was a child have been raised upon living in a generation of black versus white until independence. There is always going to be some type of racism no matter where you go, as Bobo showed throughout the whole first half of the book, racism was major in her schools until the day of independence. If we did not live in a world of separating everything and working together there would be no issue with racism.
The trouble around diversity Johnson states within chapter one of his book that people differ from one another. The trouble is produced by a world organized in ways that encourage people to use difference to include or exclude, reward or punish, credit or discredit, elevate or oppress, value or devalue, leave alone or harass. Privilege exists when one group has something of value that is denied to others simply because of the groups they belong to, rather than because of anything they've done or failed to do"(Johnson, 21). Privilege can also refer to unearned advantages.
Considering an individual as having rights only when his or her rights are considered as part of a larger group promotes injustice for the
