In her book, American Jezebel: The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson, the Woman Who Defied the Puritans, Eve LaPlante explores parts of the life of Anne Hutchinson. Her intent is to tell the story of Anne Hutchinson’s life and clear her name as a woman who was accused of being a heretic in colonial America. LaPlante walks the reader through the trial Anne Hutchinson had with the leaders of her colony and gives background information throughout the book to share the story of Hutchinson’s life. LaPlante starts the story of Anne Hutchinson’s life at the beginning of her well-known trial. LaPlante’s main purpose in writing American Jezebel is to answer questions many people have had about Anne Hutchinson’s life throughout this country’s existence and to help Hutchinson “claim her rightful place as America’s founding mother” (LaPlante xxi). LaPlante’s American Jezebel is at times difficult to follow. It tells the story of Anne Hutchinson’s trial in Massachusetts, yet throughout the telling adds in additional facts. These facts are relevant to the book yet takes the reader off track for entire chapters at times. This makes it challenging for the reader to understand the story in its entirety. Because of this, American Jezebel was not as though-provoking as it was made out to be. LaPlante uses several maps throughout her telling of Hutchinson’s story. There are not many pictures to contribute to the story, but it is made up for as she effectively conveys her points through details and background information. She frequently utilizes outside sources consisting of court opinions and transcriptions and personal journals of people involved in the case. She also utilizes other books written over the time period and life of Anne

She compares and contrasts the Puritan’s situations to current political situations that have and are happening today. For example, Vowel references Marthin Luther King’s word in relation to a similar
In 1634, a woman that would play one of the biggest roles in the development of early America came to Massachusetts from England. Before immigrating to the New World though, Anne Hutchinson lived in London with her husband William Hutchinson. There, a minister, John Cotton, who believed you didn’t need to follow the laws and rules of society to connect with God, resonated greatly with Anne. The idea that religion is based on personal views would be taken with her to the New World, where she would become an icon for conservative Puritanism and steadfast determination.
I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In Chapters 10-15 Jem and Scout learn new things that they didn’t know about their father. Their Aunt Alexandra comes to live with them. Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra are both great mother figures to Jem and Scout. In this journal, I will be characterizing and evaluating.
This realization was met with disapproval and many tears, as at the time it meant extra schooling. She experienced confusion between what she had perceived as her identity, a Yankee, she claimed “It was like being born with two heads. It sounded freakish and a lot of trouble (p.19).” She certainly wasn’t wrong about it being a lot of trouble.
Miss Gates, Scouts third grade teacher, begins to talk about Hitler and the persecution of the Jews. Miss Gates lectures on how persecution stems from prejudices and how in America we don’t believe in persecuting anyone. She continues to discuss how she doesn’t understand why Hitler doesn’t like the Jews, defending the Jews because they have faith and they contribute to society. Later Scout comes home confused. Miss Gates was at the trial and she was excited to hear Tom Robinson was guilty.
I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book is about a child named Scout who grows up during the 1930’s around the time of the great depression. While she grows up she is taught life lessons and learns to see people in different ways. Some people she learns more about are Tom Robinson, a man who her father is defending in court, and Boo Radley, her neighbor who never comes out of his house. Scout is also confronted with a lot of situations where she is not old enough to understand at her young age, but as the reader hears her reading from an older perspective she realizes these situations were important.
During the colonial period many settlers came to the New World to escape persecution for their Puritan beliefs. Writers such as William Bradford, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson all shared their experiences and religious devotion throughout their literature that ultimately inspired and influenced settlers to follow. This essay will discuss the similarities in Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson’s work as they both describe their experiences as signs from God. Anne Bradstreet came to the New World as a devoted Puritan as she repeatedly talked about it in her poetry. In her poems she discusses many tragedies that happened in her life such as; the burning of her house and the death of her two grandchildren all of which she thinks were signs from God.
The 1930s was a very challenging time for america, it was the peak of the the Great Depression and the social oppression of women. The fictional novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is centered around the political issues america faced. The novel takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb Alabama where we look at the case of Tom Robinson against Mayella and Bob Ewell. The story goes that Tom Robinson went into the Ewell household and took advantage of Mayella and beat her. Although Mayella was actually the perpetrator, she won the case and Tom Robinson was sentenced to prison.
Perception defines the world around you. It affects every aspect of your being: your thoughts, actions, beliefs, etc… In the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch begins to understand just how impactful perception can be as she witnesses the deterioration of the dignity of Tom Robinson, a black man who is being tried for the rape of a white girl. In this intriguing read, Harper Lee demonstrates the theme of inaccurate allegations very effectively. More specifically, when inaccurate allegations that are solely based on perceptions are presented, the consequences can be significant, for others may suffer at great lengths.
A woman’s place in Puritan society was very limited during these times. A preface was added to her narrative by a puritan pastor as approval for her to publish her prose. Before her captivity Rowlandson didn’t know what a struggle consisted of. She was the typical housewife in a Puritan society. She never went without food, shelter, or clothing before her captivity.
Have you ever considered what it would be like to hide for your life? Anne Frank was a young girl during WWII who had to leave everything she knew and loved to go into hiding. Anne recorded everything (in depth) about what happened when she was in hiding in a secret annex with other people. Throughout this book, god and evil was an outstanding theme that arose in different ways. Good and evil in society as a whole during WWII, good and evil within the eight people in hiding, good and evil in Anne’s character, and my reaction to “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart,” are four topics that will be covered in this essay.
The novel is written from a third person objective. This novel is written as a play, so I know that this is third person. Plays are narrated in third person because you do not see the play through one character 's viewpoint. Also the word I does not often appear in the play.

Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672) has been a long-lasting leading figure in the American literature who embodied a myriad of identities; she was a Puritan, poet, feminist, woman, wife, and mother. Bradstreet’s poetry was a presence of an erudite voice that animadverted the patriarchal constraints on women in the seventeenth century. In a society where women were deprived of their voices, Bradstreet tried to search for their identities. When the new settlers came to America, they struggled considerably in defining their identities. However, the women’s struggles were twice than of these new settlers; because they wanted to ascertain their identities in a new environment, and in a masculine society.
