Chase the Lion, written by Mark Batterson, is an information book inspired by a passage from 2 Samuel 23 about one of King David’s “mighty men”, Beniah, who, “…chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day”. It’s a call to action, encouraging the reader to chase their dream, and challenging the reader to believe in a bigger God by expounding on the ideas of “dreams within dreams”, “ripple effects”, and “chain reactions”. First, Batterson expounds on the idea of “dreams within dreams”. Throughout the book, Batterson parallels aspects of our lives to those of King David and his “mighty men”. From this comparison, the reader sees that, David, without his team of “mighty men”, would have never realized his dream of becoming King of Israel. He needed their belief, and support the same way they needed his vision and leadership. Eventually, David fulfilled God’s calling on his life and became King of Israel and, Beniah and the rest of David’s “mighty men” were able to realize their dream…but neither could have done it alone. Batterson writes, “The mighty men were drawn to a dreamer with a God-sized dream. And that’s what will draw other people to you” (12). Using the idea of …show more content…
He motivates the reader to embrace the idea that every opportunity and every situation has a purpose…however small it may seem at the time. He writes, “You are one encounter away from your destiny. One off-the-cuff conversation, one crazy idea, one glance across a crowded room can change everything” (20-21). This outlook gives meaning to every little moment. Beniah, when he encountered the lion, could have run the other way. Instead he chased it. Batterson calls us to be lion chasers, and instead running from opportunities, to stare them in the face and attack them like your future depends on it. Using the idea of “ripple effects”, Batterson reminds that one moment…one decision has the power to change the way your life

The historical fiction, “The Lions of Little Rock,” By Kristin Levine portrays a fictional story about a teenage girl living during a time where school integration was being addressed. While writing the fictional novel, Levine incorporates many accurate details while also altering components to make her novel fictional. The novel begins in Little Rock, Arkansas during the year 1958. Looking at this time period, details such as gender discrimination, the space race, Elvis Presley, and the rights of individual states were all accurately represented in the novel. Even historical figures such as President Eisenhower, Governor Faubus, and the Little Rock Nine were incorporated into the plot.
Do you like it when people make assumptions about you or your situation? Most individuals don't because people often make incorrect and flat out wrong assumptions. Those who make assumptions are often basing it on superficial information and know nothing about the deeper workings of a person or their very distinct conditions and history as well; so many variables could go unaccounted for, and when others recognize this, they feel the need to correct or rather enlighten others. Jon Krakaur writes the book “Into the Wild” to clear the name of one Christopher McCandless, due to people presuming him to be like every other lunatic who ventures into the wild and dies. To clear his name, Krakaur uses evidence, structure, analogy and negation to unobstruct McCandless’s merit.
ight The choices we make, even the most mundane, affect our lives. Sometimes big, sometimes small. Normally, they’re small & inconsequential. In the novel, “Night” Eliezer’s family is taken away to a concentration camp.
This text taught me that discovering yourself is an adventure. For Chris McCandless it was quite a literal adventure but to me it was highly symbolic for an average person going on an “adventure” to discover oneself. There’s going to be things that will challenge you and the way that you have perceived things your whole life but at the end there is a destination. This text was incredibly refreshing to me and impacted me more than any novel has thus far. Chris McCandless left his privileged life as a dead man,
“Coast Beast” by Stephen Battersby is about a Dutch inventor by the name of Theo Jansen, who is a kinetic sculptor and graduated from college with a physics degree in the 1970s and created “strandbeests” which translated to English means “beach animal” or “beach beast”. In this essay it will talk about what makes up a strandbeest and how it could be titled as human-like. Strandbeests have a lot of mechanical parts to them. A strandbeest has plastic mechanical skeletons with many different parts to carry out tasks such as “helping build dunes that would defend the Netherlands against any rise in the North Sea” according to Battersby (page 2). The central spine of the strandbeest is a plastic “crankshaft” which is also known as a rotating rod.
The choices we make can often have drastic impacts on our lives in the future because every decision made impacts how our life story will unfold. The character of Eliezer from the novel "Night" by Elie Wiesel, the protagonist within Franz Kafka’s “ A Hunger Artist,” as well as my own experiences, suggest the choices impact our lives and our future. The character of Eliezer from the novel "Night" is an excellent example as to why choices impact on our future. In the novel "Night," Elie Wiesel was an adolescent born in the town of Sighet, Transylvania.
He uses an inspiring tone to encourage the reader that the things in this life are worth fighting for and worth fighting against. His ultimate goal is to emphasize to the reader that we should not let our life go to waste, since it is guaranteed to end one day.
For the realistic fiction book, I chose to read ON THE RUN by Michael Coleman. This story follows a teenage boy who is named Luke Reid who lives in London, England. There were many small conflicts in the story that brought up the main conflict of the story which was that the main character Luke, had to be a guide runner for a blind girl named Jodi, in the London Marathon. To achieve this, Luke must train hard by himself to be able to run fast enough, and he will have to train with Jodi to make sure that he is the best guider that he can be.
In the beginning of the book, Phillip Malloy was passionate to make it into Harrison school’s track team. He thought that being only good at running would automatically make him into the team, but his grades interfered with his chance at the team. He didn’t make it into the track team because he detested Miss. Narwin’s class and felt the book, The Call of the Wild was useless, so he put the most unnecessary response to an answer of his exam.
In today’s era it is all about being part of something big and rising to the top to be what everyone else wishes they could be. However, people must not lose sight of what is important. That is the unity and support they will receive from emerging themselves in the diversity of life and the people around them. In Marina Keegan’s essay, “The Opposite of Loneliness,” she opens everyone’s eyes to realize that no one has to settle for what they do not enjoy and that people do not have to accept past decisions as the final ones.
Runner Essay Charlie faces many challenges in the novel ‘Runner’ and generally overcomes them by making the right choices. The novel Runner is a novel written by Robert Newton which describes life in Richmond, Melbourne in the 1919. The novel follows the protagonist, Charlie Feehan, as his family and himself struggle with the effects of poverty, corruption and sorrow.
Henry David Thoreau uses Metaphor to develop the theme. Thoreau states "... not to be thrown off the track by every nutshell and mosquito's wing that falls on the rails. " Therefore he says that because people tend to stop reaching for opportunities just for one simple mistake. Take that and help yourself be better for the next opportunity. It demonstrates that when you are living your life, there will be bumps.
What if you have been given rules to follow, Eckel’s and Plumwood both were given rules that they were supposed to follow. But they didn’t so they were put into danger. In “Sound Of Thunder” Eckel’s stepped off then path and killed a butterfly and it changed the future.
From the beginning, he guides the protagonist through a midlife crisis that is almost sure to go wrong. He is a wealthy man, lost in a suspicious part of town in an expensive car. This has trouble written all over it. People in these areas are desperate for money, and robbing a rich man in his Mercedes-Benz would be a more than possible event that could ensue. Most fatal of all however, and most ironic of all, is that “[he is so] intent upon the future that…
