Becoming politically correct to please different genders or groups is insignificant. Boys and girls, and men and women are not the same, therefore, we should not be treated the same. Michael Golden supports this topic in the essay “Don’t Rewrite the Bible”. He uses examples, opinions, commentary, and humor to express his own thoughts on political correctness between genders. Golden first supports his opinion by explaining how changing certain words or phrases to be more general would make both genders appear more equal. He continues with talking about how women feel inferior to men, but he argues that it may not be as big of an issue as some feminist groups make it out to be. Lastly, he brings to the reader’s attention that differences are …show more content…
The author notes, “The National Weather Service avoided a storm of controversy several years ago when they began giving hurricanes and tropical tempests masculine as well as the traditional feminine names”. (2) He claims that when naming natural disasters, the weather service acknowledges there should be both masculine and feminine names. Like storms, men are looked at as strong and aggressive, which is why I believe storms were originally named masculine names. The service thwarts conflict by picking names to equally accommodate both genders. This quote reminded me of the t-shirts the girls tennis team wore at Manteca High. Across the back it read “Don’t make me backhand you”. It was a clever line that was sarcastic and tied in with the sport, but had caused an uproar at our school. When imagining a backhand slap, most commonly an angry male figure comes to mind. The message was misinterpreted and not approved by many, which resulted in the team no longer being able to wear their shirts. The lesson learned here is that people should be more aware of the generalizations genders have before making comments that may offend certain groups. Political correctness can be important because people should be aware of their word choice, and use of certain names or terms so they are not making one gender appear less than the other. Although people should be respectful of others opinions, we also should embrace what makes men and women different rather than blending them together to appear as a single
The authors in this week 's reading displayed an interestingly skillful use of logos, pathos, and ethos to help persuade the reader to share the writer 's viewpoint on gender equality. In certain works, a specific type of rhetorical appeal prevails over the others. A great example of this is Judith Sargent Murray 's "On the Equality of the Sexes." In this work, she primarily utilizes logos to support her main point that males are not mentally superior to women. Once again, logos is an appeal to logic, in which the author attempts to persuade the audience with evidence and valid reasoning.
Misjudged Chivalry In "Chivalry Isn 't Dead, but It Should Be", Hailey Yook argues that chivalry is one of the most important characteristics of gender discrimination that is implanted in our society today. The author explains that other than every positive change in understanding woman and their role in the society, today we are still faced with invisible sexism. She uses an effective statement about the consequences of feminine or masculine colors, toys or movies that famous companies use and try to explain that these can be effective on children 's individuality. Yook, claims that acknowledgement of invisible gender inequality can help us reach equality. She explains the definition of "Chivalry" and shows us that it is used differently
Although women are increasingly gaining a higher esteem in the world, women still have not attained the regard that they deserve. Girls have always been treated with an immense disrespect. This disrespect is seen through countless limitations by men, such as the right to own property, the right to vote, etc. These views are still around today, as the Equal Rights Amendment still has yet to be passed. The ridiculous remarks, shown in Pygmalion and A Knight’s Tale, can still be heard through the ears of an average women, no matter which country she lives in or how high ranking she is.
Gender Roles: Interpreting The Opposite Sex In today’s society men and women are often expected to perform different tasks, and occupy different roles based on their sex. Within different cultures, the view of how women and men should act and interact varies with political and religious influences, as well as personal influences. Geoffrey Chaucer suggests that people’s ability to understand the opposite sex is divided because of the stereotypes set in society for the opposite genders. Women are more likely to work as secretaries, and men are likely expected to work as managers and executives in the working field.
“One must never fail to pass a moral judgment,” (Rand, 1). This statement is huge because this is a thing that happens all the time. People will pass a moral judgment and that is what they did in the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand. For the majority of the book, humans referred to themselves as “We”, not “I”. They were supposed to all act and think as one.
On the other side of the argument, Marche criticizes Slaughter’s dialogue concerning men in her article. Rather, he addresses the representation of men written in articles composed by women in general. He touches upon the fact that not only does Slaughter focus upon the subject of her husband taking over the domestic role, but also Sandberg, another woman mentioned in Slaughters article. Marche states that “men are far more anonymous-implacable opponents of progress in the upper echelons, helpless
During this week, we have covered numerous topics, none more prominent than the oppression of women. Everyone had different opinions, allowing me to take into account different views on the issue. In one of the texts we examined, “Oppression”, Marilyn Frye, a philosopher, debates the subjugation of women. She states the cultural customs that causes oppression of women. I do agree with her view that women are oppressed, but I do not agree that it is just women.
Katha Pollitt, in her essay, “Marooned on Gilligan’s Island: Are Women Morally Superior to Men?” addresses the topic of how difference feminists actually weaken women. Difference feminists believe that women are morally superior to men. Pollitt was invited to sign a peace petition, but realized it was actually demeaning to women.
The Negative Effects of Gender Stereotypes Stereotypes often have negative impacts on a lot of people. A stereotype is a fixed image of a particular person or thing that is not necessarily true. The effects of stereotypes on people are discussed in the short story, “A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell. Glaspell begins the story with an investigation of a mysterious murder of a man, where Mrs. Wright, the wife of the victim, is a prime suspect. The sheriff, the county attorney, and the neighbor who found the body, Mr. Hale, investigate the crime scene.
In the short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the author, Flannery O 'Connor, demonstrates how a short story can contain many aspects of feminism without one even noticing. Looking at the short story through a feminist point of view, one can quickly gather that O’Connor uses the old school gender roles from the very beginning of the short story. As reading the title, it automatically suggests the male characters in this short story are untrustworthy, not prevalent, and dangerous. With that being said, the female characters in this story are viewed in the eyes of how a woman should act.
To stop gender inequality we have to treat women and men equally. If we continue to make believe about the society’s expectations towards ourselves, then we will be locked in the doll's house with the ghosts of Torvald and Nora hanging
Political correctness requires us to translate marxism from economic language, into cultural language. The main premise forming the essence of political correctness is that through the elites ability to dictate our language, comes their control over the way we act, therein socially engineering society for their own purpose. Political correctness can be described as the barring of expressive and activistic forms confirmed by “correct thinkers” to be exclusionary, insulting or marginalising in respect to minority groups who are discriminated against or socially disadvantaged. The intended corruption of news media, congress, universities, pop culture, politics and our industrial society can be credited to the conscious, manipulating force known
Language is a powerful tool that is deeply associated with the culture of a society. It manipulates people’s thoughts, beliefs, and emotions, allowing people to base their decisions and judgments upon it. Often, people are influenced to use language that is offensive to other people because of their different personal backgrounds and beliefs. Issues such as racism, sexism, and other prejudices are expressed through this offensive language. People are hurt by these attitudes, so people have established the idea of political correctness.
In today’s modern society we deal with many problems, our society struggles to cope with difficulties even as solutions are not hard to find. There is one problem, however, that our society has been dealing with for some time. Gender inequality has been a long battle on controversial gender roles society sets for men and women. Has this issue persisted due to biological makeup or is it how culture and society deems gender roles? For a long time, religion is one of the factors has set the limitation on the roles each gender must assume just as much as how we choose to continue customs from patriarchal times.
"It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent." The above quote said by the feminist, Madeleine Albright clearly indicates that being a women, you are not heard as much. And once you are heard it is important for people to understand where they are coming from. This is because women are targeted for abuse and always tend to deal the dominance of men. They believe they are superior just because they suppose they are more stronger and smarter than women.
