Character Analysis Joanna “Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown” is a story written by Anne Jew in 1997 which is talked about the changes and conflicts of a teenage girl named Lin who lived in Canada. The surrounding social environment has a big influence on her characteristics. In the story, Lin fall in love with a white boy, Todd. The love make Lin become a vainglorious person. Todd is a very good looking boy and always can attract other girls eyes. He is really popular in school. When Lin stays with Todd and chats with him, she tries to integrate Todd’s world and pretends she is interested in Todd’s everyday topics about his life. “I try hard to stay interested in what he says and ask him questions” (Jew 1) indicates that Lin doesn’t express her really feeling and shows that Lin is not confident in this love. Meanwhile, when Lin sees soup dribbles our of her grandmother’s mouth makes her feel disgusted when she is feeding her grandmother. Lin’s parents are Chinese origin but they moves to Canada to settle down as foreigners. They can’t speak English and are not integrated in the Canadian society, but keep on living as a traditional Chinese people. As a Chinese, Lin’s parents want her to behave like a Chinese and stay away from white people. The author starts off with telling a story about a monkey called the Monkey King, who lives in the jungle, seeking for higher power to become considered a god in the book. The author also tells a story about an American born Chinese boy named Jin Wang, who moves from San Francisco and struggles with fitting in at a new school. Character Analysis When thinking of families most of the time its people you grew up with, and the culture you grew around. The story " A Pair of Tickets" () draws on what family and culture do to family 's and more importantly one person. June grows up in America where the culture to her is more familiar than that of her Chinese parents. While growing up she thought countless of times that the ways of her mother where strange and embarrassing, and at time she didn’t think of herself as truly to her heritage. Throughout the story June goes through different stages of grief, and finding herself when she truly thought she wasn’t a part of a culture.
“What the three ladies infer about Lily Daw” In the story “Lily Daw and the Three Ladies”, we are introduced to our three ladies who are: Mrs. Carson, Mrs. Watts and Aimee. These three ladies speak about a young girl who seems to have some sort of disability or as mentioned in the story was “feebleminded”, this young girl goes by name of Lily Daw. I assume that Lily has a disability not only because the three ladies are trying to send her to this mental institute for the “feebleminded” but because the author portrays Lily’s character with a very special tone of voice and her character is also not able to make-out correct full sentences like the rest of the characters in the story.
