Eric Buchman, a popular TV writer, recently wrote an article for the New York Times titled, Football Has Become Too Real to Watch. Buchman’s argument, which is not only laid out in the title but also in the last sentence of the article, is that the joy of football, something many have experienced for years, has been sucked out of fans due to the reality of current issues within the NFL. Buchman wrote this article in an effort to inform football fans, and even everyday people, of the often-omitted issues involved with the NFL. Out of the three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, there is one that confuses me more than the others, logos. Logos is any facts, whether that be statistics or definitions, as well as, evidence, which includes
The third and last example of logos is when Will, his wife, and his mother Sandra, were going through his father's belongings and find the letter that said Edward bloom was dead. This began to foreshadow Will accepting his father's stories as truth. That piece of paper was enough proof to show Will and the audience that behind tall tales is some
The immediate and alarmist tone of Don Banks’s, a senior writer for Sports Illustrated that covers the National Football League, argues in his article that football is an American sport that needs to be changed due to dreadful brain injuries. In Banks’s article he exemplifies an ineffective strategy that conveys his rational and unbiased argument to come across to readers who are fans of football and the NFL. The headline itself - What Price Football - is evident that the concern of America’s beloved sport is being used as a gaining of wealth and entertainment generated by the incongruous with the alarmist tone of Banks’s reasoning.
Over the past summer many sports fans have either watched, talked, or listened about the major NFL conflict known as “Deflategate”. In many ways Deflategate has either turned people away from being fans of the NFL or brought them in, but first the question must be asked: What is “Deflategate”? Deflategate all started when text messages between the New England Patriots starting Quarterback, Tom Brady, and Patriots equipment staff leaked to the media. These text messages occurred before a division final playoff game verses the Indianapolis Colts and they showed that Tom Brady had asked members of the equipment staff to deflate the football used for the game. To the average football fan the deflating of a football by two psi wouldn’t make a big
Ken Butler, the author of “The NBA Opens its Doors to a Virtual Basketball League” uses the rhetorical devices of ethos and logos. He uses his writing to make his point about how eSports should be considered as sports and treated that way to his audience of fans of sports. Altogether, Butler was effective at reaching his audience with his intended message. In the middle section of the article, Butler uses ethos to help support his point.
. The only thing that stood in their way were Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers ended up beating the Steelers 31-25 and brought home the ring. Since 2011, the NFL has only become bigger across the global economy and now plays weekly games in London, England. They also play an annual game in Mexico City, Mexico.
Tackling NFL Issues Mary Louise Pratt speech “ Art of the Contact zone”, discusses the depth of the contact zone and what it is. In Pratt’s understanding, a contact zone is term that refers to social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths as they are lived out in many parts of the world today.
This article attempts to persuade readers that Peyton Manning is the best quarterback in the National Football League since the NFL was founded in the 1920s. Neil Greenberg uses several varieties of arguments to strengthen his argument, including numerous factual statistics, and loaded language. He begins the article overwhelming the reader with statistic after statistic, overloading the reader with unquestionable certainty that no other quarterback can compare. “No other quarterback has more than three first-team all-pro nominations. Not Tom Brady.
From the data I collected composed of 50 participants, 32 males, 18 females I found many common trends regardless of gender, and age. The majority of my participants, 68 percent of them ranged from 18 to 24 years old. The average length of their football fandom was between 10 to 15 years . In regards to their level of fandom on a scale from 1 to 4 , 1 being low and 4 being a die hard fan the majority of my participants identified themselves as die hard fans that spend anywhere from 3 to 11 hours per week consuming football , whether it be watching a game, highlights, setting up their fantasy team, etc. The reason why the majority of my participants identified as die hard fans was due to their upbringing and familiarity with the sport.
Logos is the appeal to the audience’s logic or thinking of constructing a well-reasoned argument. It includes: facts, research, and statistics. For instance, "And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Have we anything new to offer on the subject?
Couple examples of logos was when Skloot’s mentions, “According to Howard Jones and other gynecologic oncologists I talked with, the correct diagnosis wouldn’t have changed the way Henrietta’s cancer was treated”(Skloot 172) and “In 1928 a German virologist named Harald zur Hausen discovered a new strain of a sexually transmitted virus called Human Papilloma Virus 18 (HPV-18).'' (Skloot 212) She uses reliable sources and discreetly informs the reader that she isn’t saying things out of thin air but instead she uses proper sources to validate her points in her novel. She uses logos by discussing scientific information and explanations, as well as the degree of Henrietta’s impact on
America and many other countries enjoy the sport of football. Fans worldwide watch and follow NFL games and all the problems that occur during games, by players, coaches, team, even fans. All fans want to see the players, coaches, and teams, be punished fairly for something they do on or off the field. But, it was noticed that the certain punishments being dealt, were extremely unfairs and are unjustified. As time went on it was noticed even more that, these unfair and unjustified punishments began to become too much for the players, coaches, team, and fans to have to see and hear about.
Logos is used in many different forms such as statistics and quotes from press conferences. On the website you will find all sorts of statistics from each AFL match. This influences the reader to read more about how each match was played, and who should have won based on the statistics. Logos is also used to show the readers what times each game starts and where to watch it. For example you will see ‘Adelaide vs Melbourne on Saturday’.
Logos is persuasion through reasoning, clarity, supporting evidence, and logic. These three elements are used in nearly
One day five years ago my father asked me if I wanted to be the water boy for the Milton Hershey School football team. I said, “Yes”. So for three years I was the water boy. I once got cleated in the face. I had to sit down for a little, but then I sprang up as fast as a rabbit.
“The importance that our society attaches to sport is incredible. After all, is football a game or a religion? The people of this country have allowed sports to get completely out of hand.” (Howard Coswell) Football is a game that has been ingrained in the American mind since its foundings in the early 20th century. With 3.5 million people across the states playing the game, 17.6 million absorbing the fierce competition from the stadium, and a whopping 240.1 million viewers taking in televised games behind a screen, football is a way of life.
