“Tell-Tale Heart”:Mr. Smith the Calculating Murderer Mr. Johnson was murdered in his own home and the killer admitted to it, so we will not be trying to find the killer, but determine if the killer was, in fact, sane at the time of the crime or if he was insane. The man in question today is Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is a housekeeper for Mr. Johnson, the man he killed, and Mr. Smith mentions things about Mr. Johnson “He had never wronged me,” and “I loved the old man,” and he still killed him. He claims that it was Mr. Johnson’s” vulture eye” on page 56 and he claims that the deadman’s heart was beating, but nothing else describes him as insane, but rather a cold calculating murderer that had guilt over his actions. In all he is able to manage his own affairs, planned the murder, and he knew right from wrong in the end. First, is that Mr. Smith could manage his own affairs. We can infer that Mr. Smith was able to take care of …show more content…
Smith planned the crime and executed it precisely. First off, Mr. Smith says “The whole week before I killed him.”(56). Which means that he planned how he was going to kill Mr. Johnson for a whole week and in most cases an insane person will be impulsive and will lash out, but Mr. Smith was cautious and precise. Next, Mr. Smith says “ Every night, just at midnight.(56) and this means that he always crept into Mr. Johnson’s room at the same time every night. This adds to the evidence of his planning with no impulsiveness. Then, Mr. Smith said, “I was more than usually cautious.(56)”. That is the icing on the cake because he is cautious and he explains he was at the time of the murder and the “whole week” before Mr. Smith killed Mr. Johnson.(56). All of the evidence proves that unlike an insane person that would just lash out in impulsiveness, our Mr. Smith planned out his kill perfectly before he even attempted to kill Mr. Johnson. Mr. Smith knew what he was doing and he planned it out, but even more is that he knows that it was
In the story of “ The Tell-Tale Heart” it shows the reader that the story is written in First Person. In the the first paragraph it has a sentence that says, “I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth.” That sentence tells you how this person is feeling, and things only the person himself could express. Another way I know this story is first person, is that almost every sentence begins will the word I. That indicates to the reader that you getting the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of one person, and by the person
Fantasies of killing another man and dismembering them which excited him but he never spoke of. “ I think it was around age 14 or 15, I started to have obsessive thoughts of violence, intermingled with sex and it just got worse and worse, I didn’t know how to tell anyone about it, so I didn’t, I just kept it all inside.” Jeffery Dahmer says in interview ( Jeffrey Dahmer - Serial killer documentary - minute 6:00 - Published on Jan 15, 2017 ). His fantasies started getting worse and worse when his fantasies crossed the line after fantasizing lying next to an unconscious man he started to think about actions, and thats when he started to make a plan. “He would knock out a local jogger with a bat and lie next to him” ( Jeffrey Dahmer - Serial killer documentary - minute 6:34 - Published on Jan 15, 2017) when trying his plan the jogger never came by and he never attempted the plan
Gabe Hatch Historical Context of D&C 121 Circumstances Surrounding how the Revelation was Received During this time that this revelation was given, Joseph Smith along with Alexander McRae, Caleb Baldwin, Lyman Wright, and Hyrum Smith, were incarcerated in Liberty Jail from December 1, 1838, to April 6, 1839 (Jessee & Welch, 2000; The Joesph Smith Papers, 1839; Wessel, 2012). 1. What is the purpose of the Clutter family portraits (detailed descriptions of family members)? The purpose of the Clutter family portraits is to give the reader a background on the family. It shows the characters, personalities, and behaviors of each member of the family.
Explaining to his victims why they are being killed before the moment of death, he prepares the area for murder. He is a tedious man, preferring to make his kills in sterile, almost surgical environments. He tends to have an emotionless manner and objective way of viewing his actions. But while making average human interactions, he has a dry sense of humor. Behind closed doors we see the compulsive side of him; the side that wants to kill.
When the murder of the Clutter family was committed Smith was not in his right state of mind. Many people have mental disabilities or are mentally unstable which was the case for Smith. He may have been physically present, but mentally he was elsewhere. “The men themselves, they wrote, were puzzled as to why they killed their victims,
Have you ever wondered, What was that person thinking? What caused this person to do such horrific things? How did he carry out these things and Why did he continue to carry them out? These are some of the questions someone would probably think about asking about H.H. Holmes, America's First Serial Killer. These questions to me into a deep research to get inside the wild and insane mind of America’s First Serial Killer,Dr. H.H. Holmes.

Winston Smith, Hero or Not? George Orwell’s 1984 is a dystopian novel, meaning the society fails to recognize human decency, shows a world where people suffer in the hands of others, and takes place in an isolated environment. The protagonist, Winston Smith (thirty-nine-year-old from the Outer Party), is portrayed somewhat controversial throughout the novel in the discussion of him being a hero or not. Due to Smith being in the Outer Party, the reader assumes he grew up in a middle or lower class family. Orwell’s definition of being a hero is ordinary people, doing whatever they can to change social systems that do not respect human decencies, even with the knowledge that they might not succeed.
On Sunday, November 13, 1842 a double murder occurred at Smith Farm in Old Fields, Long Island. The victims, Alexander Smith and and Rebecca Smith, were a wealthy, well- respected married couple who ran Smith farm. George Weeks, the Smiths farmhand, was reporting for work the monday after the murder and heard the dog barking from the work-shed by the Smiths house. George Weeks then became suspicious since the dog was usually inside with Mr. Smith. George then looked in the house and saw that the east room window was broken and Mr. and Mrs. Smith were lying on the floor covered in blood.
An important incident in Blood on the River, chapter 4, is when . . Captain Smith is arrested and sentenced to be hanged. The charges are: “intent to overthrow the government of this mission, murder the council members, and make yourself ruler”(23). Captain Smith can not keep up the bad behavior he has shown the gentlemen, but has a hard time controlling his anger and knows he will have to at least act like he is respecting the gentlemen if he wants to get out of chains. He confides in Samuel and teaches him lessons he should have learned before he got himself in trouble, “Don’t let your anger get the best of you”(58).
Anthropology Questions: 1. Was this crime indicative of the beliefs, morals, and culture of the two aggressors? 2. Were there any scratch marks found on the victim? Were there any fingernails found at the scene of the crime?

The movie Capote (2005) posed many ethical issues in relation to the way qualitative information was conducted. The first of which being the study, or research design, was not approved or monitored by a review board, ethics board or review committees. Capote read about a murder that had occurred in a small town in Kansas and came up with the idea to write about it. There was no informed consent shared with members of the community that he and Harper Lee spoke with regarding the murders. I do not believe that many members of the community were even aware that he was working on a writing, and felt he was just a concerned citizen.
As a wise man once said, “Hatred can last for a year while guilt can last for an eternity.” In A Tell Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe, the author describes a person's carefully organized plan to get rid of an old man’s eye, but soon realizes that his plan is ruined and guilt is brought into his life. In “I Can Stand Him No Longer” by Raphael Dumas, the poem explains a man’s secret distaste for another, that when publicly announced is turned to embarrassment and shame. Both the poem and the short story focus on the idea of guilt, and they both send the message that hate leads to one revealing their actions and secrets. The authors of the two stories develop this idea of guilt in a very similar way of syntax and conflict.
