He supports his claim by providing evidence of how sports are beneficial to kids, explaining the problems within sports, and extending the importance of what creates a positive response from sports. Gould’s purpose is to inform coaches, principals, and parents about what makes sports beneficial and how to prevent the problems in order to allow kids to learn and become better citizens. He establishes an informative tone for coaches, principals, and parents.
Have high school sports teams brought a negative effect on American School’s education? In the Article “The Case against High School Sports", published by the Atlantic, Amanda Ripley argues the negative effects of high-school sports on a student’s education in America. Also she discusses how today's society make people think that high school sports is more of a necessity to students than getting a good education. However, Amanda fails to persuade the general audience because she used an excess of unneeded interviews by foreign exchange students and had failed to tear down the counterargument that sports teach discipline and social skills, which resulted in the audience feeling unchanged about their opinions toward the subject.
Throughout Gould’s article he includes data and research to prove a point that High School sports can be beneficial for the youth through increased educational aspirations and even increase social skills within adolescents. Even though most of the research has a positive outcome there is a chance of it having negative effects. In the third paragraph Gould continues on how the issue concerning winning in the sport participated can cause academic success to be forgotten about. He makes it clear that winning is not unimportant

In this post, Amanda Ripley initially shows the benefits when involving in the high-school sports: exercise, sportsmanship lessons, some positive personalities, more fun and staying away from vices. She also writes some tales to inform readers that in the US, students are interested and enjoy in sports more than other peers in other countries. However, she claims that the high-school sports have negative effects on schools and students. Next, she gave some schools ' examples to show the problems when schools and students spent too much time and money in high-school sports.
Courtney Stawarz says, “Sports are important, I understand that. However, Elizabeth Kolbert has a valid argument.” She says, while Americans tend to put more emphasis on sports rather than learning, it is not the children that are at fault. She sees how sports are related to grades being you have to make sure you are eligible to play. Children have to watch their grades in order to be able to play sports in schools.
Many school’s require a C average to even participate. So, without sports would those kids who only keep grades up for sports, fall? Or would American kids realize the importance of education instead of sports and put in more effort? Kolbert discusses the distraction side of sports involvement in school and the different views of academics and sports to parents. Although sports offer a number of life skills, it can take away from student study time.
Standardized testing has not improved education in America. Standardized tests have been issued in schools all across the nation for years now. Some people like them and some people don’t. They do not help the student learn more information than they would without the tests. The U.S. has dropped from 18th highest scores in schools in the world to be in the 30’s on almost all of the subjects on the test.
Sports have been a part of America for a long time. Long enough that they are big part of American’s culture. When the word “sports” is mentioned to any American, the first thing that comes to mind are sports at a professional level, mean while forgetting the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) athletes. Surprisingly, America has the unique value of being able to play sports on a high level while going to college. No other country has that privilege.

People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.

Due to the standardized tests there is a lack of knowledge because, the teachers are teaching for the only the test. So the students who only memorize tests are not completely comprehending what they are learning. This causes students to be less competent in what is going on in the world (Pamela). Also the standardized tests tend to cause the teachers to be less creative. This is due to the rigour of the tests, this causes them to be more focused upon the fact that there is a standard they need to cover, which causes them not to see that they are forgetting to motivate the students to do better
