The book Ten written by Gretchen McNeil takes place on Henry Island. The only thing on this island is a vacation home owned by Jessica, one of the teens in the story. She plans on throwing a party on the island and she invites all of her friends. But what they don’t know is that she isn’t the one who actually sent out the invites. There are ten teens in the story, Meg, Minnie, T.J., Ben, Gunner, Kumiko, Nathan, Vivian, Kenny, and Lori. They are all suspicious when Jessica doesn’t show up to her own party. This makes the story very scary and ominous all throughout because they don’t know where she is and they are on her island by themselves. They all know each other from school except for Ben. No one really knows him but he told everyone …show more content…
She likes another main character named T.J Fletcher. She has just graduated high school and she is going to UCLA when school starts back up. She is very uptight and doesn’t like to go to parties or do things that she wouldn’t normally do. She is a ‘good kid’. She gets good grades and likes school. Her and T.J. are the only ones who live. Another important character in this book is Minnie. She has blonde hair, “Minnie cocked her head.”’How did you know who I was? I heard you’d be the pretty blonde one”’(14). She and Meg are best friends. Meg and Minnie get into an argument in the book over T.J. He is Minnie’s ex-boyfriend but Meg likes him. This leads to Minnie getting killed by a gunshot to the neck from Ben, the killer. T.J. Fletcher, the boy that Meg and Minnie fight over in the book is tall, strong and athletic. “He was just as tall as T.J. but thin and lithe where T.J. was muscular and athletic.”(14). He also has brown hair. He and Meg escape in the end by hopping on the ferry when it arrives after three days of the teens dieing. The ferry only goes out to the island when it is scheduled to so there was no way of escaping until it came …show more content…
Minnie goes to the party because she is invited by a popular girl. “‘Jessica Lawrence invited us to her house party. That’s not an invitation you turn down, but… “She sighed deeply. “‘I don’t know. It’s not like we’re friends or anything.”’(3). She probably wouldn’t have gone if other people weren’t going or if it was an ‘unpopular’ person that invited her. Another theme in this book is to not give into peer pressure. Meg goes because she is talked into it by Minnie. “Minnie placed her hand over Meg’s and squeezed. “‘Look, we’re going to have fun this weekend. We need it. Okay?”’(6). Minnie payed the price by going because she was
In the short story by Sandra Cisneros, “Eleven,” the author has a negative, frustrated attitude towards being eleven. The author conveys this by using literary devices such as symbolism, and repetition. The author’s use of symbolism is demonstrated in the red sweater. To the author, the red sweater is something that she is embarrassed about since its “ugly,” “raggedy,” and “old” (25).

In Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the main character, Jonah Skidmore, had a sister named Katherine. Katherine’s supportive and calming qualities made her considered to be a best friend. Her best friend qualities were exemplified when Jonah and his best friend Chip went through some hardships. Jonah and his best friend, Chip Winston, were both adopted. One day, Chip and Jonah each received a letter stating, “YOU ARE ONE OF THE MISSING,” (Haddix 20).
Fannie Lou Hamer was instrumental to the Civil Rights Movement, and without her, discrimination in the USA would still be a major issue today. Hamer was a field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) that helped African-Americans vote and co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. She was the “spirit of the civil rights movement” and was “one of the hardest-working, most dedicated activists I have EVER known” (Lewis et al 47). Fannie Lou Hamer had an immense impact on American history and was one of the most influential people in the fight for equality in the USA. Fannie Lou Hamer was born in Montgomery, Mississippi, on October 6, 1917.
Minnie even said, “think of all she's done for me”. Clearly Mis. Pickswinger and Minnie had a healthy and hearty relationship. Even after all the girls struck Minnie with chairs and locked her up, she still fought to prevent the prank and save Miss. Pickswinger. Another reason why Minnie is innocent is that it just wasn't in her nature to commit such an immoral act.
Have you ever read “ And Then Their Were None”? It is a very good mystery book. Ten people were all invited to Indian Island to go on a vacation. When the book started they were all on their own going to the boat docks.
Blood Brothers essay – English assessment draft Blood Brothers is a two act musical written by Willy Russell. The story tells about the twins Mickey and Edward, who are separated at birth with Edward living a comfortable life with the Lyons family, and Mickey with his birth parents living in poverty. The boys become good friends without the knowledge of having the same surname.. Russell’s musical clearly shows us that there are two distinct social classes in the story, and the two very different lives those boys have. Throughout the essay we see how these boys social class affected their lives, and eventually created tension between them.
The maid's daughter.’ ” This tone shows that Rosura is upset she would think her ”friend,” would lie to her and the mothers tone shows she’s angry and doesn’t want her to go to the rich people party. And in paragraph 1 it states. “She was cross, but because of the monkey, the girl thought; it’s because of the party.”
The audience is constantly trying to figure out if Minnie actually killed John, more than if John abused Minnie. Because of this, “Trifles” is distracting and thinking about the murder takes attention away from the theme of abuse, while “POOF!” is directed on the abuse and what to do with her husband’s ashes the whole time. By staying on the topic of abuse and clearly laying it out, the audience can learn about domestic abuse and genuinely understand the meaning behind the
In the novel Belle, by Beverly Jenkins, it’s very interesting because it gives the readers the first point view of a sixteen year old girl who escaped slavery in Kentucky and travels to Michigan on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Belle Palmer is the name of the main character of the story, and her story is how she is trying to find her missing father while trying to figure out her feeling for the handsome and intelligent Daniel Best, who is engaged but isn’t sure if he’s in love his betrothed or not. In my opinion this book is good, but it’s lacking the the development of a teen romance and how they feel towards each other, while dodging the obstacle of Daniel’s parents as well as his cheating betrothed finding out. For the character
Sickened, Julie Gregory’s memoir asserts claims of abuse that are still contested by her mother. Gregory’s memoir includes descriptions of various forms of abuse used against Gregory, her brother Danny, and several foster children housed in their home. It is important to note that Julie’s mother was never formally diagnosed. Rather, Gregory came to the conclusion on her own that her mother may be categorized as having Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another after learning of the disorder in a psychology class. While Gregory did eventually study psychiatry at the University of Sheffield, England, she does have an inherent bias towards this diagnoses due to her years suffering her mother’s abuse.
In 2005 Michael Connelly revitalized his career by adding Mickey Haller, a.k.a. the Lincoln lawyer, to his stable of characters. Rakish, trick-loving Mickey seemed like the diametrical opposite of Mr. Connelly’s stolid, jazz-loving Hieronymus Bosch, known as Harry, the battle-weary Vietnam veteran and L.A.P.D. detective, now retired, who has trodden his way, clue by clue, through most Connelly novels. STORIES FROM OUR ADVERTISERS Mickey is best known for three things: his place of business, a Lincoln Town Car; his vanity plates, which read “IWALKEM”; and his way of trawling for clients by advertising on bus benches near the courthouse.
Even Mr. Hale was concerned about Minnie. The play, however, does not share the same emotions of how Mr. Hale's words could effect Minnie. The story has a greater influence than the play, invoking certain feelings about justice for abused women. The lack of details in the play "Trifles" is really an injustice to how the readers should feel about Minnie. The complex details that are lacking in the play are displayed freely in the short story "A Jury of Her Peers.

Essay 2 Abuse, friendship, growth and love are central themes in Michelle Magorian’s novel Goodnight Mister Tom, as it traces a young evacuee’s,William Beech’s, developmental growth from a deprived, abused, discouraged child to a confident and happy boy. One learns that William’s abnormally weak appearance mirror his mental condition as a vulnerable character. Williams religiously fanatical mother’s unsympathetic fostering and abuse has led him into becoming illiterate, terrified as well as introverted and with a distorted understanding of morality. In this essay I will argue that Little Weirwold works as an allowing setting, providing Willie the freedom and the proper help he needs in order to develop and bloom, both physically and mentally.
