David expressed an analysis key in and examine the structure and nature of racial status in Texas. He adopted four periods in his examination which are incorporation, reconstruction, segregation, and integration. The beginning of the narrative is in the year 1848 after conflict between Mexico and the United States. It was a similar story between the accommodation of the old and new elites.
I believe that if there is too much of a difference in race, education, and gender between the general public and the people they choose to represent them, the legislature could not have the public best interest at heart. How could a White male with a graduate degree who owns his own business possible understand the needs of a Latino woman with only a high school diploma who works as a maid? The majority of the Texas Hous and Senate are White males who have a degree of some sort, and the only view that he could possibly understand is how to help better people with his same stature. This reflected now with debates and issues at hand now, they have good intention trying to make Texas a better state to be apart of but, is ultimately unable to see how the decision they make affect general public as a
There is an abundance of jobs that exist in the state, that are offered to those who reside in it. According to the article, Texas has added 274,700 jobs in the last twelve months, which is about twelve percent nationwide. In addition, Texas has created jobs for the vital-middle income workers, and has seen substantial growth in both lower-middle income and upper-middle income jobs, which resulted in Texas creating nearly one-third of the country’s highest paying jobs. Given these points, the article Why Texas is our Future, emphasizes the many reasons of why the state of Texas is capable of providing a prosperous future for its inhabitants, as well as those who intend on residing in the state.
Individualistic values in Texas support government activity only “to the extent that it creates opportunity for the individual achievement.” (Texas Political Culture). In other words, Texans are in favor of a limited state government and only encourage government activity when it is needed to create individual opportunities. The practice of an individualistic culture in Texas has created hostile views towards the state and federal government, and discourage their involvement in a number of
According to Professor Elazar, the political culture of Texas is based on traditionalism and individualistic elements. I agree and accept this because there are statements and proof to back up this fact. Texas has a strong sense of individualism, traditional values, conservative leanings, and its position as an economic powerhouse. The voter turnout in Texas is lower than most other American states, with the argument that Texans view political participation as a financial perk versus the value of contributing to society. Texas has a strong tradition of individualism.
Latinos were already living in Texas, mostly all Texans had Mexican origins, had various obstacles that limited them from voting in the state throughout the 19th century. For the most part African Americans entered the state as slaves, were second class citizens and the Texas political system was eventually opened up to them. Asians are much smaller groups that origin from China, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, and etc. About 1 million Asians migrated to Texas.
Such descriptions as democrats or republicans divided into certain areas of El Paso compose the diversity over political beliefs, thus expanding a multicultural area by taking many other opinions into consideration. Education also divides people into certain groups, not segregating them, but rather classifying them into more groups that add up into more diverse and complex organizations. Education is a good factor when talking about diversity because it directly affects the citizens’ lives and relates to whom they are and what they do. Norms and values aggregate to the list of one of the many factors that cause cultural diversity in El Paso. Every known civilization has always relied on its norms and values to make progress because of a meticulous organization that keeps peace and union within the borders of each nation, state or city.
The history of political parties in Texas is marked by nearly a century of Democratic Party dominance followed by a realignment that shifted the balance of power in favor if the republicans. Political science professor Cal Jilson noted that the dominance of one party in Texas has been a result of the state’s dominant values. Both parties in Texas today reflect more conservative versions of their national counterparts. The other chapter talks about the Interest groups in Texas. Interest groups plays a critical role in all democratic systems of government.
According to Texas Edition, minorities are more liberal and tend to vote
Immigration in Texas has affected the political subculture of the state in the south. The new immigrants adapt to the old political subculture and because they are not legal residents of the state they cannot participate in political culture that can change the way they live specially in the southern parts of Texas like Hidalgo county, Texas where they have highest poverty rate in the nation with forty percent of the residents enroll in the food stamp program. In Texas colonias are unregulated settlements, they are considered rural subdivisions because they lack infrastructure, sewage, roads, and a water system. It is hard for Texas to make change when they have the largest colonia population in the country.
The Federal judge John Hannah stated “The dominant political party treated all member of the opposing party as if they were “enemies of the state” instead of the respected state leaders, many with a great wealth of government knowledge and ability that has and would inure to be benefit of Texas” (133). The issue is that voting in Texas is so racially divided; discriminating against Democrats is equivalent to discriminating against minorities. Democrats fought to keep their place in legislature by concentrating on individual officeholders during the redistricting process. Republicans, instead of undertaking the chore of encouraging minority voters, would rather overpower their ability to choose their own representation.
Laws and rules that date back to times when it made it difficult for people to stand out and have a voice. Texas based their laws on family values, school prayer, against abortion, and against gay marriage. Another negative aspect of Texas its location next to Mexico. Since Texas is bordering Mexico, there has been a lot of illegal Mexican immigrants crossing the border unto Texas seeking jobs that belong to legal Texas citizens. Though has been stricter laws put in place to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over into Texas, there is still dispute over the issue
