The Crusades The Christians in the east were in dire need of help. Thousands of Christians were slaughtered. The Turks and the Arabs defeated the Christians, obtained the territory of Romania (the Byzantine Empire), and taken a large amount of land from the Christians. The word Crusade means “Going to the Cross.” The First Crusade began in 1096. The Crusades were called for by Pope Urban II to capture the Holy Land back from the Muslims. He persuaded people of all ranks to come to the assistance of the Christians. He told them that if they were to die by land or sea, or in battle, they would be forgiven of all their sins.
