In the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie the main character Junior faces many harsh challenges before he chooses to leave the rez. Some of the challenges he faces are poverty, having a disability, and bullying. He must face all of these challenges in order to be the person he is today. In the beginning of the story after we find out that Junior had hydrocephalus we also learn that he and his family are very poor. Junior asks, “Do you know the worst thing about being poor? Oh, maybe you’ve done the math in your head and you figure: Poverty=empty refrigerator + empty stomach”(Alexie 8). In the first ten pages of the book he points out that because his family was poor they sometimes didn't have enough money …show more content…
In the first chapter of the book called The-Black-Eye-of-the-Month-Club Juniors says, “I was only six months old and I was supposed to croak during the surgery. And even if I somehow survived the mini Hoover, I was supposed to suffer serious brain damage during the procedure and live the rest of my life as a vegetable.” (Alexie 2). From the get go Junior’s had it rough, he was supposed to die during the surgery that was supposed to save him, and since he did somehow survive he had some other health related problems and deformities because of it. Junior says, “First of all, i ended up having forty two teeth. The typical human has thirty two, right? But i had forty two. Ten more than usual. Ten more than normal. Ten teeth past human.”(Alexie 2). That was the deformity i had mentioned before, he was born with ten extra teeth and believed he wasn't even human because of it. Junior has faced many health related problems because of his Hydrocephalus but he also faced a lot of bullying because of it as …show more content…
Junior explains,“ do you know what happens to retards on the rez? We get beat up. At least once a month. Yep, I belong to the Black-Eye-of-the-Month-Club.”(Alexie 4). Junior is explaining that he gets beat up at least once a month because everyone thinks he’s a r***** and less than a normal person. At the powwow the Andruss brothers find Junior and say, “ “Hey look” one of them said. “It’s hydro head.” Yep those bastards were making fun of my brain disorder. Charming huh?.”(Alexie 21). The Andruss brothers continue to make fun of Junior and even kick him in the balls, we find out later that the Andruss brothers are actually 30 years
Junior even got into a fight with a boy named Roger that would call him chief and made a racist joke about Native Americans the
All of this information is important because these are the main characteristics of him. Rowdy has many good qualities like his strength and his anger issues. Rowdy has lots of strength because he is always behind junior back all of the time. Also, this is
One afternoon, while Junior is sitting on his porch, a local teacher from Junior’s school visits him. He gives Junior hope and begins warning him to move somewhere where he can’t give up because everyone around him has already broken down. “...you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.” (43) This lights the fire in Junior where he realizes he needs to change everything for his survival or he will crumble.
Junior’s father’s drinking problems and the lack of funds to afford decent living conditions on the reservation are prevalent issues throughout the book that provide an insight into this theme. This proves that the author has written this novel to exhibit the hardships of those in poverty are detrimental to a child’s future. First, the novel shows the hardships of poverty by showing the discrimination made against Junior. On page 86, Junior states he “remembered when I [he] used to be a human being,” (Alexie 86).
Can you imagine an iron rod going through your head and surviving? Phineas Gage lived for 11 years after having the unfortunate brain injury. (chap 1, para 2)In the novel A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science by John Fleischman we learn about Phineas’s behavior changes. After the brain injury he is still alive, but he acts differently. That is similar to adolescents because their brains are still developing, and their actions are very similar to his.
The author of the section I chose to discuss in this journal name is Cynthia Crosson-Tower. This portion of the chapter describes how a child’s environment can guide and mold their path and journey in life(Crosson-Tower, 2017). One interesting thing she wrote was that a kid that has been faced poverty in any portion of their life triples the chance that they will remain underprivileged up to the age 30 contrary to kids not underprivileged. The author adds that the lengthier of the time a kid experience such underprivileged life the greater the risk they will experience in their adulthood. Another point the writer mentions is that money is not the only concern, things such as being worried about their necessities being achieved.
‘So what?’ ‘So you want to shoot some hoops?’” (Alexie 228). This also supports my reason because originally Rowdy didn’t like that Junior was leaving the reservation to be in the better school. This shows Rowdy coming to accept him for leaving the reservation.
Sherman Alexi points out the fact that growing up in poverty can affect morale, resources, and relationships. And all of these issues can lead to low self esteem and mental health issues which Junior will try to balance constantly. Junior struggles with morale because of the poverty he grew up in. Junior is a teen who grew up on the rez in a poor household, this caused Junior to feel hopeless as he believed that poverty was a cycle and that he couldn't get out of. “Poverty doesn't give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance.
When Junior decides to go to Reardan to get a better education thanks to the talk that he and Mr.P had, he decides to tell his best friend Rowdy. Which does not end their friendship, since Rowdy feels like Junior decides to abandon him. When he tells Rowdy that he plans on leaving Rowdy yells “You always thought you were better than me”(Alexie,52). So while Junior was trying to leave to follow his dreams and get a better education. Rowdy thought he was leaving because Junior thought he was better than him and was trying to get rid of him.
Not one of them… I suddenly wanted to apologize to Rowdy, to all of the other Spokanes. I was suddenly ashamed of my anger, my rage, and my pain…I ran into the bathroom, into a toilet stall, and threw up. And then I wept like a baby,” (Alexie 195-96). Junior is also under the impression that he is somehow betraying his tribe by not following the same cycle as everyone else.
After realizing it’s not his parents fault for being poor he says, “Seriously I know my mother and father had their dreams when they were kids. They dreamed about being something other than poor, but they never got the chance to be anything because nobody paid attention to their dreams” (11). His parents had a conflict with the world, they had aspirations, but since they were living on the reservation they weren’t given chances. This conflict reveals that Junior is understanding because he knows people on the reservation aren’t given any real chances to accomplish anything the only way for him to get a chance was by leaving. While talking to Mr. P about his sister, he realizes, “Had she been hanging on to her dream of being a writer, but only barely hanging on, and something made her let go” (39).
Junior initially shows this quality when he averts his lack of money at the breakfast after the dance. Sick with worry, Junior confesses his lack of money to Roger, who responds with care by lending him money. Though Junior lies about the location of his wallet out of shame, he bravely asks for help from Roger. Thus, he approaches his dilemma with courage which indicates his capability to acclimate. Also, Junior reacts to the heartbreak of his grandmother’s death by finding an outlet to his struggles.
Some examples of the ruled he doesn’t conform to is "don’t be a goody-goody", "never discuss anything of importance with anyone", and "empathy is for nerds". Katz says "never discuss anything of importance with anybody" is an important rule to follow in order to become a man. Junior doesn't follow this rule, Junior often times broke down and discussed struggles and hardships with Rowdy. Discussing things of this nature is discussing things of importance meaning Junior doesn't conform to the third rule in Katz' Code of Conduct. Another example of Junior not following this rule is when he talks to Gordy about Rowdy and why he hates Arnold.
In the article 7 kids 1 apartment What Poverty Means to This Teen by Courtney stein a young boy named Jairo Gomez lives with his mother and 6 siblings in tiny apartment, he explains how he had to grow up fast for his age to help his mother. He quotes how his having to work 13 hour shifts and making food deliveries on his bike just to help his mother. Jairo has also explained how he failed all of his classes because he was missing school to be at home and take care of his younger siblings. Facing these hardships, it was an eye opener to him and instead of continuing to suffer in school he deiced to have a talk with his mom and explain to her that he wants to be able to graduate. Jairo pushed himself more and more to overcome his tragedy.
Junior again shows his power when he is being interviewed before his game against Wellpinit and talks about how he wants to win against Rowdy. Junior says, “And now I want to destroy him. I want to score thirty points on him” (185). Alexie uses this hyperbole to express Junior’s desire
