Cara Knott was a 20-year-old living in California who was enrolled at San Diego State University. On December 27th, 1986, she was driving home from her boyfriend's house. She called her parents to let them know she was on her way home but never got there. The following day, her car was found on a dead-end road. Along with suspicious skid marks (53 between them), insinuating a large vehicle that did not match the car she was driving. Keys were still in the ignition of her car, and her purse was still in the car, implying that it wasn't a robbery gone wrong. Later on, only 75 feet away, her body was found at the bottom of a 65-foot ravine. Because she was acting, they decided to take a further look into his alibi and discovered that the place he had written in his notes at the time of the murder was erased and replaced with a different location. With all that, they decided to make him a suspect and investigate him further. On his uniform, they found gold fiber. After doing tests on both fibers, they found that they were identical to the ones found on Cara's body. Match any of the other officer's uniforms. Found on Craig's uniform were fibers from the pants Cara was wearing on the day of her murder . when they sprayed luminol on his truck, investigators didn't find any blood. they found yellow rope under his tires which was tested against the ligature marks on Caras neck it was an exact match. They finally decided to test the blood on her shoes, but the DNA was not positive. Back then, all they had to go off was the blood type, which was type A-B, and when they ran Craig's blood, they discovered that he was also type A-B. It happens to be the rarest blood type. It was also discovered that the trucks found on the road by Caras's body matched the truck he drove exactly over her face and matched the police flashlight.
