Comedian, George Carlin once said “I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. These two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.” In most cases religion in general is seen as prosperous and helpful, yet there are some extreme cases where religion is used to hurt people. One example of a church using their religion as a harmful hate mechanism is the Westboro Baptist Church. The church is known for their hate filled posters, songs and speeches. The church’s beliefs are extreme and very detrimental to the people who follow them. This can be compared to the Puritan religion not in exact beliefs, but in the extremist mindset and the part that they think God will damn them to hell if they don’t follow the Bible word …show more content…
In 1692 the Salem Witch trials took over the Puritan religion. People were being convicted based on spectral evidence and being hanged based on the words of greedy awful people who were willing to kill someone just to accomplish some of their own selfish desires. Thoughtless reasoning clouded by a harmful religion is what caused the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Fear of the Devil, and witches who did his bidding, was very real in Salem at the time. People in Salem believed very much in plainness, the divine mission, and most of all grace. Puritan people believed that "The invisible world": disease, natural catastrophes, and bad fortune attributed to work of the Devil. For example women believed that if they lost a baby that meant that the were unworthy in God’s eyes. This seems absurd today because if someone loses a baby in the modern world it is taken as an unfortunate circumstance, not as them being and unfit human. In the 17th century many people were

Puritans and their beliefs is what started the era of the Salem witch trials. Puritans, a group of English Protestants, emerged as a growing community in the North America. Their population were expanding and scattering throughout Salem and Boston. A sense of mistrust and spirituality is what defined the background of Puritans in Salem. The few aspects which threatened them were wild animals, sudden attack by the Native Americans and the belief they had deeply funded in, the existence of Satan.
All over the world people have religions, cultures, and beliefs, that help them decide how they act or live in life. An example of this is in the play, The Crucible. In the script, The crucible, by Arthur Miller, the people of Salem are Puritans who are led in a theocracy. Because the people of Salem are puritans, they believe in God and the devil. The people of Salem also believe in witchcraft as the devil’s work.
In Salem, Massachusetts, Puritans were strong believers in the Bible. The Bible states, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The Puritans beliefs led to them accusing 20 innocent people of being a witch, this resulted in their deaths in 1692. Even though the Puritans couldn’t see it at the time, their accusations were really based off jealousy, lies, and Salem being divided into two parts. One cause of the Salem witch trial hysteria was jealousy.
The Crucible and the Ironies of Religion Arthur Miller wrote the famed play “The Crucible” as an analogy of his experiences during the red scare. He undoubtedly demonstrated the ignorance of the people whom were accusing he and others of being affiliated with the communist party. I also believe that he did much more than expose the corruption going on during the red scare. I believe that in “The Crucible” Arthur Miller paints a vivid picture of how corrupt and evil religion itself can be. A particular scene where Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris are questioning Abigail and Tituba is a great example of this immorality.
In the bible the Devil was talked about, saying that the devil is real. The devil was known to be smart and to enter a person's body and turn them into a witch. This is what those people believed, that is part of their religion. Religion, a Major Role in Portraying the Characters’ Motive McCarthyism and Puritanism are two completely different groups, yet they both go hand in hand in The Crucible. McCarthyism is more of a practice and Puritanism is more classified as a lifestyle or religious choice. In The Crucible, religion is very prominent throughout the play and Arthur Miller makes that very clear. Each character is unique and has a range of different motives. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses religion has a major role in portraying each of the characters’ motives.
In literature alone, there are many stories that are categorized as allegories due to messages or lessons that are implied in the writing. By definition, an allegory is a something that has a hidden or symbolic meaning. Of course they are not just limited to stories; allegories are also expressed in the form of a poem, a picture, or a movie. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a good example of an allegory for it tells of a significant event in history in which a small town of Massachusetts named Salem had been controlled by a paranoia of witches after watching a few of the town girls showing off odd behaviors and participating in occult activities. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegory for Subversive Activities Control Board,
People, typically with authority, like to use the saying ‘the truth will set you free’. But sometimes, you just have to lie to stay alive and free. This was the case in the story The Crucible. The Salem witch trial hysteria of 1692 may have been instigated by religious, social, geographic and even biological factors. During these trials, 134 people were condemned as witches and 19 were hanged. These statistics also include 5 more deaths that occurred prior to their execution date. It is interesting to look into the causes of this stain on American History, when as shown in document B, eight citizens were hanged in only one day.
