The Devil’s Highway is a creative non-fiction novel by Luis Alberto Urrea and published in April 1, 2004. This resentful Novel tells the true story of 26 men who in May 2001 attempted to cross the mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadly region known as the Devil’s Highway, a desert so harsh and desolate that even the border patrol is afraid to travel through it. Only twelve of those men made it out. The outcome of this was 14 people died and the person to blame were the coyotes that lead them to their death. Mendez was fully responsible for the walker's demise on May 23. First of all, Mendez showed no concern for the walkers. Lastly, In the end Mendez deserted the walkers and took their money and left them stranded. This story’s tale of loss of innocence is cutting and terrifying, similar to the Islamic terrorist group, ISIS; a group of Sunni Muslims formed under Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. They are well known for being a religious extremist group famous for attacks globally and recordings of executions. McCarthy’s illustration of the boy’s loss of innocence mirrors the innocence stolen from youth who are forced to witness ISIS’s executions of innocent humans.

Mendoza comes to torture and interrogate the five of them. Palmer kills the two guards and threatens Mendoza with the gun from the guard. Palmer and Will dress in the guards’ uniforms and act as if Jim is their prisoner making Mendoza corporate with the plan to escape. They save the girls and almost make it to the trucks before being found out. They escape the prison and hide in the catacombs of a church.

When the cousins need money to pay to cross the border safely, Jaime makes money from his drawings, but white, wealthy tourists take advantage of him and his sister, assuming that they can buy anything they want from them. “‘My children love your dog. How much for her?”(pg 253). In this scene, a tourist father attempts to buy Jaime and Angela’s dog, Vida. When Jaime refuses, the tourist is taken aback, because he assumed that he could buy anything that he wanted.

Oscar Romero lived out his faith in Jesus through helping those in need of a voice. Archbishop Oscar Romero (1917-1980) was born in a small town in the East Mountains of El Salvador. After Father Grande’s death, he was inspired to speak as a voice for the voiceless. In his time, the country was split into 2 social groups: the radical in which include the Guerrilla and Power including the 14 elite families that ruled the country. Oscar Romero sat in between the two groups but throughout the story, but he moves closer to the radical side.
