The setting of the novel, A Short History of the Girl Next Door, by Jared Reck, is set through a year long school year. The setting goes from school to home and basketball practice. This novel is told from the point of view of a freshman. Since this story is about the life of a high schooler the mood is romantic and a bit reckless. The main character wants to go out with his childhood best friend but she does not feel the same.
There are three characters in the novel. Starting with the main character Mattew or as everyone call him Matt or Matty. Matt is shooting like he always does and sees him pull up at Tabby’s house and beeps the horn and as he leaves he gives Matt a peace sign and Matt and no idea what to do. This leads us to liam and tabby dating. This gets starts to get more serious she wears his jacket and they start doing stuff together. As they start to get closer as a couple and matt and tabby become closer friends tabby gets involved in a fatal car accident over christmas break. When school resumes on the first day back the teachers get a email that says “late sunday night Tabitha Laughlin passed away in a automobile accident’ (160). Matt does not take well to this he has a break down and freezes and does not even hear the bell ring.
The conflict of the novel is man vs self. Matt faces his problems first by losing his girl. This makes him realize that having a best friend is much more important than having a crush. Matt also learns how to shut off his brain and focus on the important stuff. Matt also learns that it is good to have a very good friend. That you shouldn't take anything for granted because one day it could all go away. He learns to put his feelings aside and just be friends.
