In the novel, The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism, Dr. Edward E. Baptist explains slavery from a different and more explicit view, the enslaved Africans themselves. The Africans illustrate in grueling detail the punishment which was usually torture that they would receive for the slightest things, including not reaching a daily picking quota. Baptist describes how the forced labor of Africans is what made United States powerful and rich.
