The Han Dynasty was a significant time period of great technological, as well as cultural advancements in ancient China, from 206 BCE to AD 220. During this time, the Han Dynasty made significant achievements in technology. The Han Dynasty’s technological advances were numerous and diverse, contributing to its economic prosperity and cultural influence. The Han Dynasty was a society that prioritized and achieved significant technological advances, such as the development of cooking utensils, mirrors, tomb furniture, architecture, pottery, and more, which contributed to its economic and cultural success.

For many generations, various cultures have used tombs to represent a person’s afterlife, but the Han Dynasty revolutionized the creations that the deceased took with them in their eternal life. Tomb furniture provided insight into the art, culture and daily life of the Han Dynasty. Tomb furniture began with simple elements such as wooden items and pottery but throughout time, the tomb furniture became more elaborate and decorative to represent the growth of wealth and status of the Han Dynasty elite. The Han Dynasty valued the respect and care of one’s parents, “filial piety” (Qian, 2018). Researchers believed that the uprising of the illustrations carved in tombs was because of how important it was to respect the ethics of one’s kingdom. The Han ruler believed that it was not only right but crucial for people to “[serve] the dead parents as if [they] are serving the living” (Qian, 2018). This represented the daily life of the Han Dynasty and why tomb carving was valued so much. People apart of the Han Dynasty spent exponential amounts of money on the tombs and what filled the tombs to show they valued the lives of the deceased. Moreover, the Han Dynasty began a new era of furnishing tombs with “objects from life instead of bronze and iron ritual vessels,” which developed a new way of representing the wealth of the deceased (Campbell, 2010). The architectural achievements helped develop new and improved ways of building that made it possible to build more elaborate and bigger structures. One of the most monumental contributions of the Han Dynasty was its part in the construction of the Great Wall of China. While the wall was not initially built during the Han Dynasty, it was reinforced and expanded during it. The Great Wall of China was expanded west by the Han Dynasty workers. The workers used evolutionary techniques; “first wove out basic frames using rose willow and reeds, and then they filled the frames with gravel…[then,] they piled them up in layers” (Pang, 2022). The architectural achievements of the Han Dynasty had an extreme impact on Chinese culture and society. Moreover, the Han Dynasty achieved the development of roofing techniques. The Han Dynasty used three different styles of roofing including “straight roof ridge without warping, roof ridge with slight upwarp on both ends of main ridge and vertical ridge roof ridge with obvious and obtuse-angulate upwarp” (Dong and Zhu, 2021). Although there were many different techniques, they were each used for different reasons.
