The progressive era was a period in time where citizens came together to fight for different, social and political reforms throughout the country. There were unsafe working conditions for children, women, and men, there were powerful businesses that ran the economy, and more. Reformers wrote about corrupt businesses and working environments to try and get better laws as an outcome. Progressive era reformers were effective in shaping the mandates that were being created by the government. The different social, political, and economic reforms that took place shaped the government and the new laws that were created, improving the lives of all. Taking place in the late 1800’s, this movement took place in order to help the poor through community centers and social services. One effective part of this was the YMCA and the Salvation Army’s help. The YMCA opened libraries and pools, while the Salvation Army cared for and gave food to them. One person with a huge impact was Florence Kelley, a large supporter of this movement. She helped limit child labor by fighting for the Illinois Factory Act. The Settlement House movement was a major movement that had many positive impacts on the social reforms during the progressive era. Some significant reforms in the 1900s were the homes families and strangers lived in going from slums to nicer living conditions. For example living in an apartment that is meant for 1 maybe 2 adults has 10 to 15 adults living in it with a bathroom down the hall away from the rooms for people in other apartments to use as well, or when someone gets a sickness in the apartment and everyone in the whole building gets it because everything is contaminated from the person being sick. The reform movement took place during the 19th century. Inspired by the Second Great Awakening, America's citizens started multiple social reform movements in the antebellum era. These reform movements fought against slavery, women's rights,and the poor treatment of people in prison and asylums. The reform movements influenced the development of the United States by changing the way Americans viewed slavery and women.
Some of the movement 's took place in New York, but some of those other movements caused other movements that changed the United States. Religion was one of the most important movements. Many people wanted to have these other religions that some people might not be acceptable so they had a movement about it. In map 1 it shows all of the religious revivals and churches that formed around the Erie Canal and formed the Burned-Over District. Document E also states that, "In reaction to a society which was undergoing rapid social reform and economic change, utopian and millenarian religious and social movements arose with separate visions for reordering the world"(Oneida Community Mansion House).

During the progressive era our country faced many problems. The rise of substantial businesses caused industrial problems. Women suffrage, alcohol, child labor, and safety issues caused social problems. The necessitation of citizens in government decisions also caused political problems. Progressives were people who wanted to solve all of these quandaries.
