Lake Erie has been a huge topic for Ohioans due to how polluted the water is. Lake Erie is Ohio's biggest water source, and that being polluted is not good for Ohio and other states that use Lake Erie’s water. Though this is not the first time this has happened before, in 1960 the lake was VERY polluted due to heavy industries lined up on the shore lines. Lake Erie called the “Dead Lake” for how much pollution was in it, and how many dead fish there were. The Cities reacted to this by taking steps to improve its sewer system and better monitor water quality. Mayor Carl Stokes led the way, pledging to clean up Cleveland's waterways. Carl's involvement brought significant media attention to the problem and contributed to the national movement against water pollution. -Rotman …show more content…
The algae comes from fertilizer that washes in the water from huge farms near the lake. The algae absorb a lot of oxygen from the water when they run out of steam and leave spots called “Dead Spots” which are areas where there is no oxygen so fish can’t breathe. Though this isn’t even the worst part, some of the bacteria that are in the algae get into our water and cause nondrinkable water. If someone were to drink it, they would get very sick and maybe have fatal outcomes.
All hope is not lost though because Scientist are working very hard to solve how we can clean the lake. Some are finding ways to filter the water, and others are just trying to clean Lake Erie. Also if we take care of our lake, we can really fix it up and make it a clean
Although this idea would save enough money to keep Flint, Michigan from falling, the area in which they chose to get their supply from was “...notorious...for its filth.” ( Ganim & Tran 2). Many locals who live near the Flint River, are aware of how contaminated and unhygienic the water is. When citizens were told that the switch from Lake Huron to the Flint River would take place, they believed it was a joke. After the plan was put into action, locals began to immediately see a drastic change and were worried.
He also briefly brought up the horror of the over polluted Lake Erie. “The lake is dying and we still haven't done anything. Think about what the loss of a lake morally means.” His bold sentences really helped the citizens who attended understand the passion he has for this moral issue.
Warf and Holly explained all of this in the article “The Rise and Fall and Rise of Cleveland.” Cleveland was a prime examples how the global market can effect a city dramatically if it changes the way they were normally before. Cleveland was first a huge land opportunity that was discovered by Moses Cleaveland. Moses Cleaveland
Water is extremely important when it comes to shaping Michigan. It has been shaped physically in the forms of glaciers, rivers, and lakes. It has been shaped both physically and socially by the migration of people. Michigan is surrounded by about 20% of the world’s fresh water, known as the Great Lakes. These lakes are maintained by many things including the water cycle, wetlands, wildlife, sand dunes, and many other natural resources.
Positively it has helped Lake Michigan’s water clarity which people like said Dr. Bootsma. The last couple of years it is 15-20 M clarity while in the past it was around 8-12M, twice as clear as it use to be. quagga mussels eat plankton making the This seems all well except water clarity allows more sunlight to the bottom letting algae grow like wildfire.
By exchanging the city's water supply from the abundant Lake Huron and Detroit River to the very dirtied Flint River, authorities got under way a progression of cataclysmic wellbeing dangers to which a significant part of the general population was to a great extent uninformed. At the point when inhabitants complained about the nature of the grimy
Recent studies have shown that the water in Flint, Michigan has been contaminated by a horrible health impact, lead. This has happened because nearly two years ago, the state of Michigan decided to save money by switching Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron, to the Flint River a notorious tributary that runs through town known to locals for its filth. This has led to many terrible effects shown in both children and adults. The many effects lead has on children and adults are very drastic if not taken care of properly they could have lifetime effects. Dangerous effects lead can lead to that effect children.
The use of the vignette creates a sense of dirtiness and corruption that alludes to the main purpose of the chapter—water pollution. Glennon claims that “water pollution is an acute national problem that threatens our existing water supply” (76). Existing problems that the author discusses in his chapter include: the collection of sewage and storm water in a single collection system, nitrogen fertilizer, and animal feeding operations. Robert Glennon effectively validates his
There was also the Nation Environmental Justice Advisory Council that was put into place because of Riis’s efforts. “It also became an important predecessor the muckraking journalism that took shape in the United States after 1900”(The) which was another major movement. Jacob Riis made campaigns in order to make the water fresher because they were not in a state where people could drink it. “State officials were forced to take actions that would clean the
So many things rely on the water that if it were to be contaminated, there would be a chain of unwanted results. Luckily, the state of Minnesota takes extreme caution to protect its most abundant
Water Pollution in San Joaquin Valley San Joaquin Valley is a place that stretches from 7 different counties such as Stanislaus to Kern county. San Joaquin Valley is known for their agriculture land since the late 19th century, which feeds most of the United States with the vegetables and fruits that are grown in the valley. The rich life of life in agricultural fields rely on the water supply that the valley contains such as groundwater and water on shore. Throughout the past decades, the water quality in San Joaquin Valley becomes to decrease from clean water to polluted water.
The scientific name of these organisms are called “cyanobacteria” or in simpler terms, “blue green algae” Primarily, the presence of algae is regular on any body of water as it’s growth is promoted through nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. So it would be completely normal for algae to be seen on the lake. Although, for the past ten years, Lake Winnipeg has suffered
Also, if the water becomes too polluted, then there would be no fish to catch. One stereotype that has the most truth to it is that fisherman lie, but mostly only about the size and how the fish was caught. Everyone lies, and fisherman are no exception to this. Afterall, fisherman only do it to spice up the story because who likes a boring story, and it wouldn’t be a fishing story if the size of the fish wasn’t exaggerated. Every group has its bad batch of people that make the rest of the group look bad as a whole, and the fisherman group is no exception to this truth.
Lake Superior is the biggest lake in the U.S. we would hate for that to be ruined by people who pollute. Pollution can cause many long-term effects. For example, In 1969 oil got into the waterways and started the lake on fire. We do not
As you may know the elevated lead levels that were found in the Flint water supply after the city officials voted to disconnect from Detroit's water supply. When the city of Flint began drawing its water from the Flint River in April 2014 this lead to the trauma that has affected the city. Due to the improper maintenance of the old pipes the lead has infested the whole community water and created a state of emergency
