This is anger because Rachelle broke up with him, showing direct anger. This caused Andy to get caught trying to rape Melinda. The theme of man’s inhumanity to man is conveyed in Night through the Nazi’s horrendous treatment towards the Jews. The greatest and most terrifying enemy in the novel was not the crematories, weapons, or the concentration camps, but the people behind them all. It is painful to believe that Hitler and his followers could have so much hatred for an innocent group of people. Not only were the Jews normal residents, they were fellow neighbors and figures in society. The Holocaust is an excellent example of the epic battle of man versus man, where the Jews are forced to face the Nazis and the other Jews fighting for survival.
Greed, lust, gluttony, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. Ever since the Middle Ages the Roman Catholic Church has portrayed flaws within humanity as the seven deadly sins. While this concept isn’t new, sins represent how evil can come in many different forms. True evil comes from within and is defined by an action committed with disregard for other living beings; or in other words self-interest. Self-interest is something all humans are born with and often synonymous to the seven deadly sins.
Melinda's internal conflict between speaking out about her assault and denying its reality is a central theme in the novel. On the night of a party she was invited to, she had too much to drink. She stumbled into a forest, unaware of the people and her surroundings. Andy Evans, a senior, took advantage of her drunken state and sexually assaulted her. Despite being warned by an inmate about Auschwitz he stayed optimistic telling himself a human can’t possibly be that cruel to another human.

Melinda is scared for her life because of Andy and states him as “made out of slabs of stone” and “enormous” (193). The first time that Andy and Melinda were together, Melinda was drunk and Andy raped her and she did not fight back. During the time Melinda said a small “no” but Andy covered her mouth and kept doing what he was doing.
Now, Melinda is starting to open up about the night of the party. Last, she stands up to Andy. While Melinda is in the closet, Andy tries to make her admit that it was her fault, but Melinda puts Andy in his place and confronts him. “I said no” (195). By standing up to Andy, Melinda shows that she completely recovered from the attack.

Night by Elie Wiesel shows when humans are put in horrible situations, the acts of selfishness greatly increase. The book shows that when humans are in crisis like the Holocaust everyone is desperate to survive, so they will do anything they can to get their basic needs. The people forgot who they are as human, and how it made Elie and others act differently towards each other. Elie Wiesel, and everyone who he meets along the way want to survive this, at times they forget why they want to live. But no one wants to get defeated by the Germans.

This was the second time in the book that Andy harassed Melinda and she had enough. She was already called a liar and was struggling in school with friends.
