Poems when written well allow readers to ad live the experience the author is describing, which is the cause of “The Fish” poems written by Elizabeth Bishop and Mary Oliver. Although fishing is one of my favorite hobbies it is also one of the most popular recreational activities which can be done on any budget. There are many reasons to fish, there is recreational, for food, a reason to get outdoors; however, catching the fish is only part of the fun. The tranquility of the peaceful water and the quiet time can be full filling all by itself as a portrait. The peacefulness of the water that calms you before you accept the challenge and cast your reel. This is why this paper will be on two poems with the same names but by two different authors, …show more content…
Both poems are written by women who were known to experience nature and fish. Both poems begin with I; Bishop writes, “I caught a tremendous fish” (916) and Oliver writes “The first fish I ever caught”. Fighting of the fish was described in both poems; however they are two different types of fighting Oliver spoke of how the fish wouldn’t stop fighting, while Bishop spoke of how the fish didn’t fight. The fight of the fish can be part of the excitement of catching the fish without breaking the line. Bishop describes how the fish wouldn’t fight, giving the perception that the fish was old and …show more content…
Oliver studied her fish and let it die and began to struggle with the remorse for her actions. This is why she felt the pain, but by eating the fish and not wasting the fish was a cycle of life. The eating of the fish became difficult for Oliver to deal with but the eating of fish is a long time source of nourishment. There is also nothing wrong with letting the fish go, to live for another day. Bishop had achieved catching a large fish, and then she let it go, so someone else could experience the thrill of catching a fish that had gotten away so many times before. Bishop connected with the fish, she described it in great detail to think you were the one that hooked it. She was known to fish and with her connection could relate the need to set the fish free to continue to fight off other anglers that came its
Antwone Fisher Memoir Essay Finding Fish is a story of a young, unloved boy growing up and overcoming all obstacles and hardships in order to become an amazing man. Antwone Quenton Fisher was born on August 3, 1959, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born in a prison to Eva Mae Fisher and Eddie Elkins, who was killed before he was born. As a result of this, Antwone grew up in the foster system and he was placed in the unloving home of his foster parents, Mrs. Isabella Pickett and Reverend Ulysses Pickett.
“So the merciful, noisy machine stands in our house working away in its lung-like voice” (824) is from Mary Oliver’s “Oxygen”. This quote is a metaphor, ultimately describing the oxygen tank in the home. The narrator’s loved one who is ill depends on the machine to breathe. The narrator seems to have a love/hate relationship with this machine; loving it as it keeps her loved one alive, and hating it for the reason that it has to be there at all. Oliver also describes the illness tastefully, but gets the point across; “Now the fire rises and offers a dozen, singing, deep-red
Comparing and contrasting poems Poetry often takes different forms mainly because different poets have different styles through which they communicate their intended messages. According to Kathy, it is this style that defines the different works by different composers (Kathy 7). This paper hereby seeks to compare and contrast Heaven and I am a cowboy in the boat Ra. The main objective herein is to identify the similarities as well as differences between the two pieces of work.
The goldfish is a symbol that keeps showing up again and again throughout the book. This is because one day, when Melody was listening to music, her fish jumped out of it’s bowl and died minutes later. Her guess was that Ollie was sick and tired of swimming around and around all day. According to her, “Ollie spent all day long swimming around that small bowl, ducking through the fake log, and then swimming around again.” (p. 32).
This suggests that the fish had great importance to Christian’s knowing that the Ichthys dates back to the very time Christ was around. This contributes to the idea that the meaning of the fish symbol evolved to how we know it as today because of the actuality of its meaning at early existence near 0
Author’s Statement “Friendship never stop, even when the world stops.” I am Ty’wan Nichols and I have writing three poems called “Friendship,” “Teamwork,” and “Ice cream.” They are good poems I am 12 years old. These poem are about what I like abou life. In the poems “Teamwork” and “Friendship,’’and there are theme and point of view are identified.
The theme of the poem is never giving up and it portrays Mr. Fisher being resilient about the “Erik Fisher Football Dream.” Mr Fisher in this poem is seen to be as the “man in the shadows” as he is always lurking behind Erik trying to make his dream come true. The tone of this poem is obsession and almost mysterious. Throughout the piece it is conveyed with words such as “pointless vision the man would not let go of” and “determined to make the delusion exist.” This provides the tone of obsession with the connotation of the words.
To support this, the poet wrote “until everything was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow! And I let the fish go.” Victory is something that everyone wants, and because the poet experienced that beauty in fishing, that’s what defines beauty the
From the Border “There probably isn’t a week of my life that I don’t have at least one experience when I feel that discomfort, the slight frown from someone that wordlessly asks, ‘What is she doing here?’” “The girl is powerless in the face of humiliation. A shower cannot wash away her pain. Without adequate recourse, the experience is devastating.” (Rowlands p. 22, 23).
The two poems I have decided to compare are “Love song, with two goldfish” by Grace Chua and “Valentine” by Carol Ann Duffy, because of the way in which the poet surprises the reader. The reader is initially deceived by the titles given to the poems; “Love song, with two goldfish”, for instance, is quite an unusual title. Animals are rarely ever associated with strong feelings of love and relationship – goldfish make no exception. “Valentine”, similarly, tricks the reader by suggesting that the poem will be about romantic love, but instead the poet is very direct about her feelings and does not hold onto the popular ideals imposed by society – like cliché symbols and ideal love. Instead, she herself concentrates on her own feelings and what they might lead to.
A French poet, Victor Hugo, once said ‘Life is the flower for which love is the honey.’ Love is an universal passion or an intense sense of affection towards. Love takes an infinite form. A love for a hobby; a love for an animal or pet; a love for a person. Love can be seen as stereotypical, something that is interpreted as humble and embracing.
The fisherman brings to realization that they are respectful, beautiful, and fearless creatures that should be feared by him and the other fishermen. Hemingway points out the shifting tension between life and death, glory and defeat, and loss and gain throughout the
Comparing & Contrasting “The Passionate Shepherd” and “The Nymph’s Reply” The two poems, “The Passionate Shepherd” and “The Nymph’s reply”, are alike, and different in their own way. Both of these poems use a unique style of writing by having six stanzas with four lines each. Although each poem throws in different types of viewpoints regarding love, nature and time, the passionate shepherd is writing too what he thinks is the love of his life while the nymph is replying to the shepherd trying to tell him his love is not love, it is just lust. The Shepherd is writing to the nymph trying to tell her he loves her by saying “Come live with me, and be my love.” This line is repeated multiple times throughout the poem.
How obsessive love is shown in the six poems studied ? In this essay I will compare the poems that I have been studying. I will focus on obsessive love in each poem showing whether is it a negative or a positive love through contrasting and comparing the poems and showing the similarities through language techniques and the structural choices of the poems. The first two poems I am going to compare are Nettles and The Song Of The Old Mother.
By the time he got it in he had a lot of respect for the fish. He formed a strong relationship with the fish over those three days. He felt bad for taking such a great fish. On page 110 he says “I shouldn’t have gone out so far, fish. Neither for you nor for me.
