The Consequences of Revenge
The novel A Long Way Down has many themes and messages within the story. One of these many themes is revenge. The novel heavily implies that revenge is bad and in my opinion is the main point of the novel.
In the beginning of the novel Will, the main character, tells the reader about three rules that everyone in his community follows. On pages 31 through 33 the rules are told as followed, “The rules no. 1: Crying, don't. No matter what. Don’t. No. 2: Snitching, don’t. No matter what. Don’t. No. 3 Revenge: If someone you love gets killed, find the person who killed them and kill them.” Revenge is something that is stated in the rules and throughout the rest of the story the rules are brought up and revenge is the one that is mostly talked about. On page 95 Will tells Buck, “I’m about to do what I gotta do. What you woulda done. I squared. Follow the rules.” When Will encounters Buck in the elevator he tells Buck that he’s going to follow the rules and get revenge on the person who killed Shawn. This goes to show that revenge is the central point of the text.

He’s convinced that he’s the man that killed Shawn and throughout the story repeats that he’s going to kill Riggs although he isn’t aware of the consequences of revenge. On page 218 Will’s father says, “Uncle Mark and My father looked at me with hollow eyes dancing somewhere between guilt and grief, which I couldn’t make sense of until my father admitted that he killed the wrong guy.” This shows that even though Will is confident that Riggs killed Shawn there is still a chance that he’s wrong and the consequence of getting revenge would be killing the wrong guy. On page 267 it says, “Shawn stuck to the rules, … Bang Bang.” This means that Shawn followed the rules and got revenge and because he got revenge he was killed in an act of
Revenge is a strong urge that shouldn't be acted upon because of the consequences. Understanding the influence of emotion and thought on human behavior is important for coming up with solutions to problems. Karyn Hall writes about, and goes in-depth about the topic of revenge. Revenge is self-destructive, yet it is still a part of everyday life. One theory about the purpose of revenge is to prevent certain hostile actions.
His brother Shawn died following those rules, so why should Will have the onus of taking revenge for him and have that target on his back? Besides, he didn’t make The Rules and multiple members of his family died following them. Up until his brother’s death, the third rule hadn’t meant anything to him. Now Will decides between continuing the path of violence and revenge created by generations before him, or breaking that chain and setting
”Revenge is not a good thing. Revenge is like politics: one thing always leads to another until bad has become worse, and worse has become worst” (Jonas Jonasson). The book Long Way Down, the main character Will, has to follow three rules. No crying. No snitching, and always get revenge.
Revenge is a never-ending cycle that leads to the demise of an individual. In the book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds when the narrator, Will, is seeking revenge after the death of his brother. Will receives advice on his choice from people who are presumed to be deceased and have came back to life. Although many characters in Long Way Down impact Will, the most significant character he encounters is Mikey Holoman because he alters Will's decision to get revenge. Mickey Holloman was most influential in Will's decision because he represented the endless cycle of revenge.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of revenge is “to inflict injury in return for.” In To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM) by Harper Lee, Scout, and Jem explore Civil Rights and racism in the segregated Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Expressed through the eyes of 7-year-old, you learn about her father Atticus Finch, an attorney who desperately tries to prove the innocence of a black man falsely accused of rape; and about Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor who saves Scout and Jem from being slaughtered by Bob Ewell. In the scene when Jem and Scout are attacked by Bob Ewell, Lee develops the theme, revenge brings consequences through external conflict, and symbolism. Seeking destructive revenge always creates a larger issue.
Revenge is a real thing in today’s society. It happens every day. There are different reasons for revenge from as small, as a small child stealing a stick of gum to a drug dealer murdering a nark. Regardless, taking revenge in itself may be for the greater good, or evil.
Will would have thought of this and then thought of how he kept saying “It had to be'' about Riggs. Maybe that was the point where Will made the decision to go home and not follow his fathers footsteps. This reminds me of how your parents always say don't do stupid things. Yet we always think about doing them. Almost all of the time we stray away from that stupid thing, because our parents are smarter and know better than us.
In "Long Way Down," author Jason Reynolds explores the devastating cycle of violence that hurts many communities. Will, the protagonist, showed us a exciting journey that highlights just how difficult it can be to break free from the vicious cycle of revenge and violence. The author shows this by telling us about how the characters were always told to get revenge, how easy it is to get pulled into the cycle, and that it makes people's vision/mind cloudy making them make bad decisions. The first quote that shows this theme is "No.3 Revenge if someone you love gets killed find the person and kill them.”
The third and final rule, revenge refers to retaliating or hurting someone in return for being hurt by that same person. Will assumes he must
Most people involved in this cycle of violence grow up believing it is the thing they are supposed to do. A great example of this is Will, and wanting to get revenge for his brother. One of the main ideas of the novel is the “Rules”, and these rules are - No. 1: No Crying, No. 2: No Snitching, No. 3: Get Revenge. These rules are a culturally learned idea that is formed in high violence areas.
In this essay I will be discussing violence and how it affected him, drug addiction and storytelling. I personally believe revenge is okay to seek and its human nature but there are some limits. Taking revenge in a way that harms the other person in a
We have been taught that to hate is wrong, and revenge can have a strong relation to hatefulness. Revenge is a root of evil of someone that feels that they have been wronged. Throughout the novel it gives multiple examples of the toll it has on people 's emotional and physical being. For instance, murder would be an example of a dark, uncharastic type of revenge, Murder, for example, is a strong element in this novel, begging readers to pursue the ethics and myriad questions behind the action. Is there such a thing as a "philosophy of murder" or a rationale behind murder?
Vengeance has been an ongoing problem for many centuries. In the long run, with the new generation, they have been following the same pattern to get revenge, without knowing the reasons why. If no one is willing to stop and think it over, to evaluate if it’s worth the risk, then the act of vengeance will be ongoing at the cost of many lives. Many people do not realize that having to avenge the death of a loved one will take so much time and patience in their lives. In the short story, “An Act of Vengeance,” by Isabel Allende, the issue involves a young girl who gets raped by Tadeo Cespedes, whom also killed her father on the same day.
Revenge can be a horrible emotion; it can sometimes lead people to do horrible things. By definition, Revenge means to get retribution for a wrongdoing done to you. In my opinion, revenge is mostly caused by fear and the overwhelming feeling of payback Throughout history, revenge, or vengeance, has been altered by several cultures and religions, and even the American culture. Though it often leads one to perform criminal acts, Howard argues that it is a necessary component in the functioning of society. He points out that revenge is a threat that acts as a disincentive to undeserved violence.
Shakespeare had revenge play such a big role in his play to prove that revenge is not good. He had all of the characters end up differently to prove that. Revenge is not a good thing to base your actions off of and in Shakespeare’s play he shows
