In the book “Night” Ellie endures many challenges and obstacles. All of the themes in this book are connected to why Ellie kept pushing through life. The themes being discussed are life, faith, and love. There are many themes in the book, but they all have something in common, they are all ways Ellie survives. In “Night,” Ellie and his family endure many conditions in the Holocaust. Most Jews are starred right in the face of death in this horrible time of their lives. Ellie and his father go through the harsh, abusive events and weather conditions. Ellie survives the Holocaust, but his father ends up dying from being sick. It was cold and snowy, the labor was difficult, they were living off of almost no food. Some saw no life at the end, so they just gave up early. Ellie on the other hand, kept fighting through the rough conditions. As death came so close, he didn’t want to join it. A lot of the deaths weren’t from people giving up, but the Nazi’s mudered the Jews in masses. When Ellie learned that masses of people were being executed at the camp he just arrived at, it caught him off guard. Ellie witnessed a hanging, and it scarred him. Before the Holocaust, Ellie had faith in God, life, and himself. Ellie was very religious, along with a lot of the people imprisoned. That was, of course, one of the main reasons they were in the camps. Faith was a reason why Ellie stayed positive. Sometimes he had faith in God to get him and his family through the camp alive. He did short prayers to God asking for this protection. When Ellie is witnessing and hearing all the horrible things in the camp, he starts to doubt if God is really there looking over him and the rest of these innocent people. When he started doubting God and his protection, he started doubting life and if he was going to get to keep it. If he didn’t have God looking over him, he had almost nothing to look
