The Good and the Bad of Technology Ray Bradbury’s “The Veldt” is a twisted story about just how much advanced technology can alter one’s daily habits, mind, and even personality. Back when the short story was published, advanced technology such as those expressed in the story seemed impossible. However, a world where robots deliver takeout is on the horizon. A house that cooks and cleans for those that inhabit it does not seem so far fetched anymore. As modern technology starts catching up with the fictional world of “The Veldt”, many benefits and risks are starting to emerge. In “The Veldt”, the Hadley family lived in a fully automatic house that washes their clothes and cooks their meals, but this house also became a subject of obsession …show more content…
However, technology is getting more advanced as time passes. For example, in Europe, experimental robots are delivering takeout instead of humans. Though they are less severe, there are definitely benefits and risks that come with this technology. One benevolent thing is its convenience. All the workers have to do is put the food in the robot and send it off, and the customers get a notification on their phone when the food has arrived (Staff). Moreso, the company will make more of an overall profit because they will have to pay less employee’s; robots don’t need a salary. However, like most things, there are downsides to this seemingly wonderful invention. For instance, there will be a loss of jobs, because delivery people will likely not be needed anymore. The speed of the robot is also bound to be a hassle. “...trundling along city sidewalks at speeds of up to 4 miles per hour…” (Staff). Hungry customers tend to be impatient, therefore the speed is going to be a crippling factor when determining whether or not this robot is a beneficial invention. There’s also concern with the snowball effect. The worry that if robots take over one small occupation, they will begin to take over more and more things until the world is being ran by robots. As futuristic as that may sound, it could very well be true in as early as a decade or
