One the hunter nd one the hunted. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” Richard Connell suggests that using your skills in the wild or any where will help you survive life threatening of hard times. The first event in the story that helps to develop the theme is when Rainsford falls off the side of boat into the cold water Rainsford was panicking but. In the story, Rainsford use his swimming skills to swim safely to the mystery island. Another reason that flows with this is when Rainsford sees the blood on the grown when he reaches the island. Zaroff is a murderer because he is killing people because they give him a good hunt. Richard Connell used foreshadowing to show that something mysteries is going to happen on Ship Trap Island. Rainsford used his skills from hunting and life to make traps, climb trees, and swim to survive from Zaroff who is the hunter. Rainsford made a trap that injured Zaroff. Connell used dialogue to show that Rainsford impressed Zaroff with his trap he made. “If you are with in the sound of my voice,as I suppose you are, let me congratulate you.” ( Connell 19) Zaroff states in the story and “Splendid! Though he has no qualms about killing animals for personal pleasure, Rainsford clearly puts a high value on human life. Zaroff, on the other hand, does not value human life as highly as Rainsford. Zaroff does believe that everybody is either a hunter or a huntee, but he believes that “the weak of the world were put [there] to give the strong pleasure.” This quote shows Zaroff’s opinion of human life: only those who are strong are worth anything, and those who are weak are worse than animals.
Because Rainsford possesses great hunting skills, he is able to defeat Zaroff in his own game. For example, his hunting abilities aid in his victory when he creates a Malay mancatcher, which, according to Zaroff, “not many men know how to make” (Connell 13).
