In the play “Macbeth” by Shakespeare, the author touches on the theme that each character in Macbeth always hides a troubling future that may lead to their downfall or someone else's downfall. Macbeth is a play set in Scotland around the 11th century, as of now war is high and on everyone's mind. Specifically, the main character Macbeth is described as a valiant soldier that can bring Scotland to the victorious side. Macbeth runs into a few witches who tell him a prophecy that leads him to his downfall and a bloody path of murder. There is Lady Macbeth who is supposedly a timid and kind woman but throughout the play, she turns out to be ruthless and not as strong as she may lead herself on as. William Shakespeare portrays the theme of deception through a mask perfectly through the character Macbeth. Macbeth is the “Thane of Glamis,” “valiant,” and “loyal and brave soldier.” Throughout the play, many people use those words to describe him but people realize he is quite the opposite of this. The King is quite impressed with Macbeth's effort and awards him with the title of Thane of Cawdor. At first, Macbeth is quite shocked because he ran into witches on the way to the castle, and they told him 3 prophecies: he will become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and then King. Macbeth's first reaction to his getting the title is that “the witches were correct, maybe there is a chance to be king.” Macbeth didn't even take the time to be grateful for having the honor of holding 2 titles or that he didn't die in the war itself or wasn't wounded. There are many scenes in the first act where Macbeth contemplates killing Duncan even though his family is very generous to Macbeth and regards him very highly. Macbeth is supposedly a loyal soldier who is willing to die for his King but now he's thinking to go against everything he stands for, just for a title. Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a strong and resilient woman that will do anything to make sure she and her husband will get that crown. When she first reads the letter, she doesn't even hesitate to even think about killing Duncan; it's almost that she will go through with it no matter what. She doesn't even realize what this may lead for her in her future; she is only seeing herself with that crown on her head. She prays to spirits saying to “unsex me” to get rid of all the womanly features that may give her a feeling of remorse with whatever horrific plan she's going with. In Act 2 scene 2 after the king is killed, Lady Macbeth seems very calm and she is critiquing her husband and questioning his manhood. She says to her husband the only reason she didn't kill Duncan is because it'll remind her of her father sleeping. She is only looking out for herself as of now and doesn't care about how traumatized Macbeth may feel. Soon after this scene, readers will notice that Lady Macbeth starts getting consumed with fear and her mental state starts to deteriorate. Lady Macbeth starts losing herself as at the beginning of Act 5 she confesses to all her crimes in her sleep.
