William Shakespeare portrays the theme of deception through a mask perfectly through the character Macbeth. Macbeth is the “Thane of Glamis,” “valiant,” and “loyal and brave soldier.” Throughout the play, many people use those words to describe him but people realize he is quite the opposite of this. The King is quite impressed with Macbeth's effort and awards him with the title of Thane of Cawdor. At first, Macbeth is quite shocked because he ran into witches on the way to the castle, and they told him 3 prophecies: he will become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and then King. Macbeth's first reaction to his getting the title is that “the witches were correct, maybe there is a chance to be king.” Macbeth didn't even take the time to be grateful for having the honor of holding 2 titles or that he didn't die in the war itself or wasn't wounded. There are many scenes in the first act where Macbeth contemplates killing Duncan even though his family is very generous to Macbeth and regards him very highly. Macbeth is supposedly a loyal soldier who is willing to die for his King but now he's thinking to go against everything he stands for, just for a title. Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a strong and resilient woman that will do anything to make sure she and her husband will get that crown. When she first reads the letter, she doesn't even hesitate to even think about killing Duncan; it's almost that she will go through with it no matter what. She doesn't even realize what this may lead for her in her future; she is only seeing herself with that crown on her head. She prays to spirits saying to “unsex me” to get rid of all the womanly features that may give her a feeling of remorse with whatever horrific plan she's going with. In Act 2 scene 2 after the king is killed, Lady Macbeth seems very calm and she is critiquing her husband and questioning his manhood. She says to her husband the only reason she didn't kill Duncan is because it'll remind her of her father sleeping. She is only looking out for herself as of now and doesn't care about how traumatized Macbeth may feel. Soon after this scene, readers will notice that Lady Macbeth starts getting consumed with fear and her mental state starts to deteriorate. Lady Macbeth starts losing herself as at the beginning of Act 5 she confesses to all her crimes in her sleep. Her mind is always shining even when she's asleep she's not even able to relax anymore and fear is consuming every single aspect of her. Her mindset completely changed at the beginning when
Lady Macbeth's intent is to persuade her husband to kill King Duncan. She is ultimately successful in doing so because she breaks down Macbeth's fear with various rebuttals to his argument and draws out his ambition to be great. In her eyes, it was his idea in the first place and he would not have brought this to her had it not truly been weighing on his heart. She also thinks about the effects of him being king. For instance, Macbeth as King would make her queen.
In the play “ Macbeth “ written by Shakespeare, we can see deception being shown throughout the play. The type of deception seen is based on how ambition can destroy a person and how the desire for power can make a person change drastically. Shakespeare portrays how the character's desire can lead to their downfall. With the theme of deception placed in the play, it can extend the show of the consequences of haste action and the loss of moral clean conscience. LADY MACBETH O, never Shall sun that morrow see!
In 1.5.37-51, Lady Macbeth is begging spirits to take her feminine weakness to allow her to kill Duncan herself. Although when given the opportunity to do the deed herself she cries, “Had he not resembled/ my father as he slept, I had done't”, showing she does have feelings and emotions as a villain would have killed him no matter who he resembles. In the end Lady Macbeth's guilt get the best of her and she takes her own life. Villains do not often feel guilt so her taking her life shows she had some goodness left in her.
Lady Macbeth has lost her ambition from the start of the play and has become scared of the acts she has done. She became regretful in her doings while participating in the killings which scared her mentally. If Lady Macbeth is the queen of Scotland nothing good will come out of
Macbeth come across the three witches, there they state, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor” (Act 1, Scene 3). In reply to the three witches, Macbeth demanded “stay you imperfect speakers! Tell me more”. With just these few statements announced, Macbeth’s thirst for power and glory arises and is clearly seen.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a testimony to the difference between greed and ambition, good and evil, and right and wrong. The story shows that when one becomes obsessed with power, they will often resort to methods of manipulation and retaliation to achieve their desired outcome. In the case of Macbeth, he is approached by the Three Witches who inform him that he will one day become Thane of Cawdor and the King of Scotland. Additionally, they inform Macbeth’s comrade Banquo that his sons will one day be kings.
He decides to write to his wife, Lady Macbeth, who holds this dark ambition inside of her. She tells Macbeth that he is a coward and that he must do whatever it takes to become king of Scotland. This dark ambition is first shown in act one scene four when Macbeth says, “This is a step on which I must fall down... which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.” Lady Macbeth plays an enormous part in Macbeth’s mental corruption. After murdering Duncan,
Examine how and to what end Shakespeare has explored the concept of deception “Fair is foul, and foul is fair.” (1.1.11). Deception, deliberately leading someone to believe in something that is not true. The immoral and deceitful actions that one executes, will always come with consequences.
Shakespeare portrays to the reader the way Macbeth became king is useless and how the title is wasted by his guilt that washes it away. His guilt, which is a direct result of his greed, slowly eats him alive and drives him insane. This is similar to a “slow death” which is a much more painful way to leave. Therefore being king to Macbeth has lost its significance and will never be the same.
In the start of Macbeth, Shakespeare portrays the character Macbeth as a well respected brave warrior. Macbeth is a general who fought victoriously in battle for Scotland and his king. Macbeth’s brave and impeccable deeds don’t go unnoticed by King Duncan, who verbally praise him and grant him the new title “Thane of Cawdor.” Unhae Langis, author of Shakespeare and Prudential

She insults him and calls him a coward while also questioning his manhood which makes Macbeth come to a realization that not killing the king is the way of a coward and he is motivated to carry out the plan and murder the king because of Lady Macbeth’s insults and speech that she gives him. By successfully persuading Macbeth into murdering the king this shows that Lady Macbeth is controlling towards people and she can be a very manipulative person. It shows that she is the type of person that gets things done by manipulating other people to do her dirty work for her. Lady Macbeth can simply achieve her own goals by getting into anyone’s head and turning their own conscience against them in, which is essentially what she did to her husband. Macbeth would have never went through with killing King Duncan if Lady Macbeth had never persuaded him because he really does have a soft heart and is good and honorable.
At the beginning of William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ the protagonist Macbeth is described as ‘brave’, ‘noble’ and ‘honourable’, however Lady Macbeth’s and Macbeths desire for power consumes them. Macbeth’s ambition overrides his conscience and transformed his greatest strength into his greatest weakness. Macbeth’s inability to resist temptations that led him to be greedy for power, Macbeth’s easily manipulative nature which allowed his mind to be swayed, Macbeth having no self control and his excessive pride was what allowed him to renew his previously honourable and celebrated title into one of an evil ‘tyrant’. Macbeth is led by the prophecies of the witches after they foretell he will become the Thane of Cawdor. Not only the witches, but also his wife easily manipulate Macbeth as she attacks his manhood in order to provoke him to act on his desires.
In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth’s reputation takes a drastic change for the worst. At the beginning, Macbeth is perceived as a loyal subject to the crown. A soldier describes him by saying, “For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name/disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel/ Which smoked with bloody execution” (1.2.18-20) He is thought be so wonderful that the king, appoints him a new title, Thane of Cawdor.

Nobody would have ever expected these thoughts to be coming from the brave, noble Macbeth besides his wife. Together, they plot
