Mark Twain demonstrates the influence Becky has had on him, and how Tom Sawyer is preserving and working towards Becky loving him when Tom takes the blame for Becky ripping Mr. Dobbins anatomy book “‘Rebecca Thatcher” --(Tom glanced at her face; it was white with terror)- “did you tear--no, look at me in the face” --(her hands rose in appeal)-- “did you tear this book?’’ A thought shot like lightning through Tom’s brain. He sprang to his feet and shouted: “I done it!”(Twain, 126). This quote illustrates that because of Becky he is now willing to sacrifice himself and get in trouble in order for Becky to love him which is his overall main goal. This also identifies how Tom is persevering through obstacles such as being punished for something he did not do in order to achieve his goal. Overall, one can conclude that Becky Thatcher was much more than Tom Sawyer’s love interest in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for she was also a key character who impacted Tom’s future positively because she educated Tom on how to carry on throughout the troubles he will endure in order to reach his

Tom Sawyer: “He had discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it- namely, that in order to make a man or boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to obtain.” (p.23) This quote shows how Tom is able to outsmart the other boys into doing his work for him, and is an example of how much of a troublemaker he can be by doing things like this.

The title of this short essay is “ In Praise of the Threat”, and the author is Rebecca Solnit. Haymarket Books published this short essay in 2014. The main point that Solnit was making throughout the reading was that we should all have the same rights no matter what. She goes on to say that same sex marriages don’t get the same equality and normal one man and one woman get. Solnit also explains how women had not rights and basically when women got married their husbands where the ones who told them what to do.
In Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer the main character Tom testified against Injun Joe in court. Ever since then, Tom’s conscience has been racking him about what Injun Joe may do next now that most people know the truth of the crime, Injun Joe committed the murder. Injun Joe has even been talking about getting some “revenge”. Injun Joe will most likely get revenge on Tom because of what Injun joe has said and done. To start, in the novel it has been stated that Injun Joe has killed once and he may kill again and he said, “‘Tain’t robbery altogether--it’s revenge!”
Harper Lee quotes in her famous novel to Kill a Mockingbird “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it, whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash”. Many novels were published around this time period, but one of the most popular is to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Her novel demonstrates how people acted back then, showing how they were discriminative and how they treated the white people compared to the black people. Jean Louise Finch narrates through her childhood name Scout and how she sees racism in her eyes. The book takes place in Maycomb County
Authors of classic American literature often utilize a character’s development to establish a worldview or opinion. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby, Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald use their narrators, Huck Finn and Nick Carraway, to suggest an argument about American society. Seeking adventure, both characters embark on a journey, but their encounters with society leave them appalled. While they each have personal motives for abandoning their past, both end up interacting with different cultures that lead them to a similar decision about society and their futures. Ultimately, they stray from the dominant culture in order to escape the influence of society.
Characters (provide descriptions – physical and behavioral) Tom Sawyer- An adventurous, charismatic, young teen. He is constantly seeking thrill and excitement and does whatever he can to achieve it. He lives with his aunt as both of his parents are dead and finds many ways to get in trouble.
Characters are placed in books, films, and tv-shows to serve a purpose and effect the storyline, whether this character plays a major or miniscule role their intent is to change details within the story. Tom Robinson in “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, was a character who could make an impact in the beginning of the novel without being present in it himself. His name was enough to set a blaze in other characters hearts. When formally introduced to the readers most of the town already decided his fate in the trial against Mayella Ewell an “innocent” white woman. The majority of Maycomb County were white men and women who despised all black people no matter their individual traits.
Tom Robinson is a mockingbird in that he doesn't do one thing wrong. All he does is provide help to the people he interacts with. That is exactly how he got in trouble. Tom Robinson was helping Mayella with some chores. He was humming a melody and when he chopped up the dresser drawers.
Rebecca Nurse and I “A child’s spirit is like a child, you can never catch it by running after it; you must stand still, and, for love, it will soon itself come back.” This is a quote said by Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible, this is said when Ann Putnam asks Rebecca to go check on Ruth to wake her up. Rebecca Nurse is an honest and caring woman in The Crucible that has eleven children and twenty six grandchildren. She was eventually accused of murdering Ann Putnam’s seven babies. Rebecca Nurse
fortunate”(292). Although he is white, Atticus demonstrates how one can understand someone, regardless of color. Instead of just being Tom Robinson’s lawyer, Atticus chooses to defend this man;however, since it is made known that Atticus is doing so, the town of Maycomb reacts with negativity. For example, he is insulted numerous times by the people of Maycomb.” Your father’s no better than the n****** and trash he works for”(Lee 135).
“Tom slumped to his knees and began to beg, saying: ‘you see, I’m begging, and it’s honest begging, too! Now tell me, Roxy, tell me.’” This quote proves to show that Mark Twain was thinking of Tom losing “dignity” in himself because he bowed down to a so called nigger. This shows Mark 's opinion because it shows that he wanted Tom a so called white boy to bow down to a black and beg for something; that 's a sight you would never see and he shows it in this book. “It had been imagined that she “would not know,” and would think she was traveling upstream.
Mark Twain emphasizes the theme that a person's morals are more powerful than the corrupt influence of society in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Based on how Huck Finn views the world and forms his opinions, he does not know the difference between right and wrong. In the novel, Huck escapes civilized society. He encounters a runaway slave, Jim, and together they travel hopes of freedom. But along the way, Huck and Jim come across troubles that have Huck questioning his motives.
McIntosh-Byrd suggests that Tom Sawyer is not the iconic, endearing children’s novel that it has been perceived as, complete with “a bright and fresh summer, brimming with life and a song in every heart”(Twain 36). I completely agree with McIntosh-Byrd’s interpretation of the novel as well. During my reading, I noticed constant references to battle and fighting which I dismissed as uninteresting. However, after reading this analysis, I have reconsidered from this angle and found that I agree. For example, she mentions how “Tom’s flouting of authority is a paradigm for American self-determination in the face of tyranny”.
