Traits Of Odysseus In The Odyssey

In the epic tale The Odyssey by Homer, we are introduced to Odysseus, King of Ithaca. Odysseus is on a journey to get back to his wife and son. Throughout his journey, he runs into many challenges that attempt to stop him from getting reaching his destination. We learn about many of his traits as we travel with him on his journey. When he finally reaches home all of his traits become clear: his strength, arrogance, wit, charm, and courage. Odysseus’s cleverness and courage helped him to overcome his inhibiting characteristics. Odysseus has shown that he has many strong traits, but one that shows in all of the parts of the epic tale is his cleverness. When Odysseus is trying to get his home back, he demonstrates this trait when the tale says “Odysseus held his temper when the stool hit his shoulder he knew not to lose his temper because it would lead to a fight”(line 23). Even when he faces abuse from the suitors, he understands that he needs to be patient and be clever to beat the suitors. By being clever or witty, he is able to get his home back from the suitors and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus back. …show more content…

When Odysseus and his men are trapped in the Cyclop’s home and he finds a way to escape him; his courage is shown throughout the four parts of the story, especially in this section of the story “Now, by the gods, I drove my big hand spike deep in the embers… no quitting now…so with our brand we bored that great eye socket while blood ran out around the red hot bar”(Lines 282-299). This quote shows that he had courage to do what he needed to do. He saved his men from all dying due to the Cyclops eating them.
