Transcendentalism Essay
In modern society it is important to be unique and have originality in order to be an individual. Emerson says that if we copy another person's work we are not reflecting on ourselves but just the experiences of another person. He teaches us that we should be unique, think for ourselves, be independent, and to be proud of ourselves. Also that if people are not original then they will just be repeating another person’s legacy and they will just be in their shadow and will not be ahead of them. There are many things in modern culture that is not original and are just copies of something from the old. In modern society there are many dangers conforming to society because it would stifle people's originality, causes imitation,

Words from “Self- reliance” by Emerson that talks about conforming to society is, “I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. The soul always hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instill is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, — that is genius.”(Emerson, 245) this quote is talking about how we if we don't use our own originality then we won't reach enlightenment because of the word admonition it was used in this quote as a moral failure to get to enlightenment. One of the many examples of how we are not being original, are reboots of old movies. An example of the many reboots that were made once again is Spider-Man since the classical one is just a guy named Peter Parker that gets bitten by a spider and then gets superpowers that lets him shoot webs and be physically stronger than an average human being. But films make reboots of the original Spider-Man because of how it already has a fan base and because of this they don’t have the problem of risking money if the movie fails to sell and they don’t make profit at all. Since the fans will go see it, the revenue of the movie will be able to pay off the film in the production stages of the movie and be able to have extra …show more content…
Emerson says, “But the great man in the midst of a crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude” (Emerson, 247) it is saying to be a great man they have to stand out in the crowd and not conform to society. Because if we just follow society blindly we just all become the same and nobody stands out. This is all true since nobody wants to break a rule so they just follow it and live a normal life. But if we act different we are to be an outcast which is why he adds the line “perfect sweetness the independence of solitude” (Emerson, 247) which is trying to say it is a misunderstanding to be an outcast and we should not fear it. Since we have to stand out in the midst of the crowd we have to do things that aren’t the same as others which is why Emerson says, “There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide” (Emerson, 246) Which is saying that we should not copy others and think for ourselves because if we copy others we should just commit suicide. A clear example of this is from the Twilight zone episode named Number 12 Looks Just Like You. This example is about Marilyn Cuberle that once she turns 19 she has to be conformed into society by looking like the rest but she refuses to be one of them because of how her dad had the transformation and afterwards regret and
Emerson believed that one can’t be themselves if they did conform, as conforming was almost like copying another person’s image in Emerson’s eyes. In this essay, he states that it’s important to believe in your own ideas in order to be a genius. “To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men,- that is genius” (Emerson, 19) Nonconformity continues to be a very common theme, as Emerson relates nonconformity to infants. “Infancy conforms to nobody: all conform to it, so that the babe commonly makes four or five out of the adults who prattle and play to it” (Emerson,
As stated by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”. In the novella, Anthem by Ayn Rand, the setting takes place in a futuristic, dystopian society that has abandoned the use of modern technology and has set rules and regulations in order to keep one practice, Collectivism, or a practice where people do not think or make decisions for themselves. No men are permitted to think of others as closer to them than any others, or have preferences on things such as their profession. If one considers his own well being and desires above that of his brothers, it is seen as a transgression. The City is ruled by the Councils who select how their citizens
One unhealthy characteristic that everybody seems to possess is jealousy, but "envy is ignorance" (Emerson, Self Reliance 185), and it is completely unnecessary because each person varies. Emerson strongly believes that people should have a tight relationship with God so they can fully understand who they are and what they are supposed to do. Conformity kills originality and people just need to "accept the place the divine providence has found for [them]" (Emerson, Self Reliance 186). Once people can overcome the tremendous pressures of fitting in, they can finally start living the life that God has put in place for them. If the pressure is too strong, and people start to conform, they will never truly live their lives because their true selves will never prevail, so overall "imitation is suicide" (Emerson, Self Reliance
Society the Thief: Examining the Motif of Individuality in “The Sociology of Leopard Man” In the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” written by Logan Feys, I agree that society takes people’s individuality to make them fit in and be like everyone else even they should be themselves. There are multiple example, explanations, and resolutions on this situation. People changing their appearance, Leopard Man refusing to give in, conformity trending, and seceding from society are some of the examples and solutions to this problem.
“It is easy, when we are young, to believe that what you desire is is no less than what you deserve, to assume that if you want something bad enough, it is your God-given right to have it,” pg. 155 Into the Wild Jon Krakauer. Published in 1996, and made into a move in 2007, Into the Wild is a book about one man’s journey to follow his dreams, and discover who he is. The story is told, mainly, by the people he met along the way and his journal entries. Throughout the book the main character, Chris McCandless, demonstrates multiple characteristics that can be seen as transcendentalist characteristics.
Transcendentalism is one of the most influential fundamentals of man-kind. Transcendentalism is the enjoyment of nature, surpassing yourself to find a greater purpose, and connecting with the Oversoul. In the movie Dead Poet’s Society, one of the professors believed education was meant for teaching people to think for themselves; he believed that if you can’t think for yourself, then you’re not truly living your life, you’re living someone else’s. The man in question was English Professor John Keating. Keating was a true free thinker, he pushed his students to think for themselves.
Transcendentalism, as expressed by Emerson and Thoreau, is a philosophical and cultural movement that emphasizes individualism, intuition, and the inherent goodness of humanity. Transcendentalists believe in the divine spark within every person, and that humans can transcend the material world to connect with a higher spiritual reality. In Self-Reliance Emerson writes Trust thyself every heart vibrates to that iron string In contrast, a biblical worldview views God as the ultimate authority and creator, and humans as fallen and in need of salvation. In the Bible, in the book of Genesis, it states "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Elena Lapp Mrs. Wertz English 3, Hour 3 30 January 2023 Transcendentalism The Transcendentalists were the great innovators of their time. They led the way with their simplistic viewpoints on life and how life should be lived. Many of them were upset by the ignorance of people who were frivolous when it came to the nature they were surrounded by. In Emerson’s Nature he vocalizes, “The sky is less grand as it shuts down over less worth in the population”
In Emerson's views, people should “not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”(citation). Based on Emerson’s thoughts, people should not follow the crowd, but instead live their lives and leave their mark on the Earth. Emerson thoughts come from a philosophical movement of the nineteenth century called transcendentalism. Transcendentalism focuses on religious renewal, literary innovation, and social transformation (encyclopedia.com). Because of their belief that God exists in everyone and nature, and that knowledge comes from individual intuition, led to the highlight of individualism, self-reliance, and breaking free from traditions(citation).
Chris grew up in society having everything paid for by his parents. They paid for his college, offered to buy him a new car, and wanted to pay for his graduate school. Chris believed in the idea of transcendentalism, and that in order to have innate goodness one should not conform to society. Although Emerson did not go off and journey into the woods like Chris did, he still stayed true to his own ideas. In “Self Reliance,” Emerson “advocates for individuals to trust in their own instincts and ideas, rather than blindly following the opinions of society and its institutions.”
The theme of the essay “Self Reliance” written by Emerson is for beings to not focus on those of others or subside his/her values to fit in with our society, for true geniuses comes from within and are made with their own heart and mind. His idea of self-reliance differs from that of the norm in that he doesn’t encourage those to mix into selfish ways but to be open and proud of their own individuality for that is the true key to life itself. Emerson’s idea is similar to the common use in that he encourages those to not depend on others to define his/her identity. 2. Emerson’s use of figurative language encourages his readers to view his ideas in a clearer and more emphasized perspective.
Society can often be seen as harsh and unwelcoming, but sometimes it may seem like a necessity to be able to fit in. Many people don't fit into society, but keeping out can be extremely difficult due to social pressures. This is explained in Logan Fey's essay titled “The Sociology of Leopard Man” through his description of the world’s most tattooed man, Tom Leppard, and how Tom affects Fey’s views on society. Fitting in is often seen as unavoidable because of the constraints society puts on us and the constraints that we force on our very own being, but this forcefulness can often be harmful.
In this essay I am explaining how the four authors: Michael Donovan, Emerson, Thoreau, and Krakauer’s transcendental beliefs are similar. To me transcendental means your own belief and the way you see life. Michael, author of “It’s All-On-Me” says in his poem, “looks like it's time to up and start mounting a game-plan attack” he is saying everything is going wrong and needs a plan to make it all better again so Michael is going to find the best way for himself to feel better. Michael Donovan is very similar in a way with these authors, they are very independent and kind of stubborn in a way that these differences make them alike. Ralph Emerson, a very independent man who needs nobody but himself, he believes in rights as well as his
This maxim particularly expresses the theme of individuality and enforces society to be their own. During Emerson's lifetime, he had been a strong advocate of the abolitionist
Each day, people make decisions that are influenced by what is considered normal in society. Whether it’s the clothes they wear, the activities do, the things they say, or the way they act, everybody participates in conformity on some level. The archetype of conformity is represented all throughout the short film, Destino, and the Broadway play, Sunday in the Park with George, by showing how one can stay true to themselves despite social norms, how one is forced to conform to social norms within society, and the struggle of attempting to remain true to oneself despite conformity around them. Is it always in one’s best interest to conform to these social norms? Conformity is a concept that is prevalent in society and hard to overcome, but the girl in the dress
