The Waco Siege In 1993, Waco, Texas was the site of a siege held by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and the F.B.I. against the Branch Davidian religious group. This group was seen as a cult that posed a danger to society. The group, led by David Koresh, was an apocalyptic based religion (Lacayo and Bonfante). They lived together on a compound in Waco and met their fate on April 19, 1993 when the fifty-one day siege ended with the compound in flames. The Waco disaster was a product of David Koresh’s unorthodox upbringing and a new mysterious religious group, an anxious government agency that could not wait to take down David Koresh, and could have been prevented if the government agencies had steered clear of the Branch Davidian followers. To get to the root of the entire situation, one must go back to David Koresh’s childhood. He was born Vernon Howell in 1959. He grew up around the Dallas, Texas area, went to school, and was interested in musical instruments. This may make him sound like a normal child, but he was far from that. Koresh, then Howell, was raised in an offshoot of the Seventh Day Adventist church and spent much of his time …show more content…
Here, they studied the Seven Seals in the Book of Revelation. The Seven Seals are signs of the apocalypse in the Bible. Koresh and the other Davidians studied and awaited that prophesied apocalypse. During this time, Koresh took on several wives and had quite a few children with women from the compound. They raised these children on the compound, away from the outside world, which they believed was wicked and destined for Hell. Though different from the “normal” idea of marriage and family, this is not uncommon amongst religions worldwide. It was during this time that the Davidians also began to stockpile weapons. This is also where the issues with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms
To fully understand the reasons behind a man’s commitment to a cult, and the choice to lead and continue the unorthodox cult sect, it is important to look at his upbringing. Warren Jeff’s was born on December 4th, 1955 as the 14th child of Rulon Jeffs, the prophet before his son took over. Polygomy within this sect began before Warren’s reign, as Rulon, his father, was said to have about 20 wives and 60 children. With so many wives and children, it is unusual for the 14th to take over such a task as taking over the religious sect. However, Warren Jeffs was born three months premature, and therefore was seen as a miracle child to his father, thus beginning a strong relationship between Warren Jeffs and his father Rulon.
The Civil War began on April 12,1861 and ended on April 9, 1865. This four year battle had more than 50 major battles occurred during this tragic time in history. On March 6, 1862 - March 8, 1862 an important battle took place that left the Union Army with a good strategical position for the rest of the war. This battle was fought in Pea Ridge, Arkansas. The American Civil War began in April of 1861 and ended in May of 1865. Many Americans lost their lives over the span of four years during that war. Historians have considered the Battle of Gettysburg to be the major decisive battle of the war, but was it? A period of 43 days in 1863, fighting for complete control of the Mississippi River is what I believe to be the most decisive battle of the war.
‘’The Battle of Fredericksburg was an early Battle of the Civil War and stands as one of the greatest Confederate victories’’. Led by General Robert E. Lee, the army of Northern Virginia routed the Union Force. The Battle of fredericksburg was fought during the Civil War in 1862. The reason the Battle of Fredericksburg was fought was because of slavery and it was also fought for land. The result of the effort by the Union Army was to regain the initiative in its struggle against Lee’s more smaller but more fierce army.
The siege of Vicksburg can be seen as a turning point in the Civil War. Vicksburg was fought after territory for both sides because of the value it encompassed. Particularly to the Confederates, Vicksburg was their last chance of keeping unity of command. Without control of Vicksburg the southern confederate states would be divided into two. As well as unity of command, possession of Vicksburg was critical to controlling the lower Mississippi River.

Title: The Sand Creek Massacre Research Question: What were the reasons behind the gold rush in Colorado in the 19th century and the war atrocities committed by United States Government towards the culmination of the Sand Creek Massacre? Though Colorado was not yet a state in the 1950s, the gold prospects within the territories which were still under Kansas at the time led to an influx of emigrants in a land that was originally occupied by Native Indians. The Colorado gold rush to this day is considered to have been the largest in the United States in the 19th century forming an intricate description of the country’s history in general. Following the discovery of gold in 1859 thousands of people descended towards the Rocky Mountains of Colorado,
The heavily armed sniper who gunned down police officers in downtown Dallas, leaving five of them dead, specifically set out to kill as many white officers as he could, officials said Friday. He was a military veteran who had served in Afghanistan, and he kept an arsenal in his home that included bomb-making materials. The gunman turned a demonstration against fatal police shootings this week of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana from a peaceful march focused on violence committed by officers into a scene of chaos and bloodshed aimed against them.
“At approximately 2:49 that afternoon, with more than 5,600 runners still in the race, two pressure-cooker bombs–packed with shrapnel and other materials and hidden in backpacks that were placed on the ground amidst crowds of marathon-watchers–exploded within seconds of each other near the finish line along Boylston Street. The blasts instantly turned the sun-filled afternoon into a gruesome scene of destruction and chaos” (“Boston Marathon Bombings”). Soon after the attack a manhunt set out in search for the two suspects. Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were the Boston Marathon Bombers who caused an unexpected event that led to the manhunt. The bombings, along with the manhunt caused much chaos and destruction to the city as well as to the
The 1870s, the time after the Civil War, was a decade of imperialism, great invention, reconstruction, labor unions and strikes, and the Sioux Wars. Especially The battle of the little Bighorn, was a crushing defeat for the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army under George Armstrong Custer. The 700 men strong 7th Cavalry Regiment were defeated by the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho, which were leaded by several important war leaders, including Crazy Horse and Chief Gall, Sitting Bull. The reason of the Sioux Wars, and so also of the battle of the little Bighorn, was that the Native Americans fight for their land. The Battle of Little Bighorn was a training point in the relation between America and Native America because
Many people believed that Mexico invaded the United States and caused the U.S Mexico war; however, it was actually United States who raided Mexico first. Furthermore, I learned from this documentary that Jim Jones was someone that did not practice what he preached and a manipulator that had a lot of power, but I was surprised by the amount of people he had such an impact on. He nurtured and protected them when society turned them away and I recognized that is how he gained all of that power. Unfortunately, this power he had resulted in the mass suicide of nine hundred and nine people in Jonestown,
Haris Being the supposed leader was wrong, Klebold was just as much a part of the shooting as Harris was (Gibbs, Roche, Goldstein, Harrington, & Woodbury, 1999). Harris and Klebold both killed people making them both guilty of the
