Was The U.S. Justified?
Did you know that after the annexation of Texas, The United States was going to continue its path of Manifest Destiny and take over California? Leading up to the Mexican-American War, the war was between the United States and Mexico in 1844. The war started when the United States tried to invade Texas from Mexico. The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because Mexico claims that the annexation of Texas was illegal and violated security reasons, the United States straight up attacked Mexico, and the United States broke Mexico’s law by bringing slaves into Mexican land.
The United States was not justified because Mexico says that the annexation of Texas was illegal and violated security reasons. Doc C shows that the United States was not justified.

The next reason The United States was not justified is that the United States straight-up attacked Mexico. Doc C shows that The United States was not justified. This shows that Mexico was attacked by the United States document C says, “In the eyes of the Mexican government, the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico… As a consequence, the Mexican government reaffirmed the instruction to protect the border” This tells us that it wasn’t justified as it says that Mexico was attacked by the United States when Mexico was trying to protect the Texas
ome of the reasons why it was unjust is because according to the website Just-War Theory Applied to US-Mexico War, the Americans declared war after being attacked by the Mexican military when they settled in Texas. They said that the Mexicans ìInvaded our territory.î The Americans like to call it the Mexican War or the Mexican American War but actually Mexicans like to call it ìThe US invasion.î This shows us how Mexico saw the war as more of an invasion than just both of them fighting for land. One big event that happened during this time is when the Americans started to move into Texas. The Mexicans decided to stop slavery and the Americans started getting mad since most of the people were American slave owners.
In the 1840’s, problems between the U.S. and Mexico had risen. Not one country was sure on if they were being invaded or if one was invading the other. The U.S. was not justified in going to war with Mexico. One reason is that the U.S. was trying to invade Mexico. Doc A is a Magazine article by John L. O’Sullivan written in 1845.
The United States entered WW2 after the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl harbor in 1941. To inspire the Japanese surrender in 1945 , and ultimately end the war, the US dropped the world's first two atomic bombs on the civilian population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since the surrender, there has been debate over whether the decision to use atomic weapons was justified and whether it was the only way to end the war. The use of this atomic weapon was not justified and it was not the only way to inspire surrender and allow the U.S to win the war.
As a Democrat, I believe that President Polk was justified in starting the Mexican-American War. Also, as a strong supporter of Manifest Destiny, also known as Western expansion, I furthermore find reason to believe Polk was justified in initiating war with the Mexican people; being that the Mexican government refused peaceful negotiation. The Americans were the just owners of this western land, and we intended to get it. The Mexican government refused a meeting with our representative to establish the border between Texas and Mexico, along with an offer of 30 million dollars for Western territory. These western territories would provide substantial economic growth for the United States, as well as the obvious: making our nation larger as
To begin, the war waged against Mexico was unjustifiable because their goal was to expand slavery in the United States. In Document E, house representative Joshua Giddings states his stance on the war, “Mexico has
During the early to mid 1800’s, one of Mexico’s priorities was to encourage American farmers to settle in Texas, a Mexican province at the time, allowing the economic growth and benefit of both Countries. Little did the Mexicans know, having opposite beliefs, this would lead to one of the most important conflicts in history. Having engaged in war with Mexico, were the Americans justified? I believe the Americans were justified, especially with having Manifest Destiny playing an important role in the overtake of Mexico’s northern land. In the process of negotiation, American troops were shot and killed by the Mexicans because they believed it was a declaration of war.
After the Texas invasion, the checking of Manifest Destiny, and the fact that Mexico still considered Texas, a new, small, and young country, as part of their nation, the United States was justified in the war and the attacks targeting Mexico. The Mexican War, which was a harsh dispute between the United States and the neighboring country of Mexico, raged on in the year 1846.
One reason that the war was not justified was because the Americans invaded the Mexicans. President James Polk himself ordered “an efficient military force to take position between the Nueces and Del Norte (B).” Even though the Americans might’ve not been on Mexican ground, they obviously intended to intimidate the Mexicans. Mexicans viewed this as the U.S. Invasion. They thought that the military order was an attack on Mexico and that the Mexicans had the right to protect the border (C).
In my opinion, yes, the United States was justified in going to war against Mexico. I say this because in 1884 Mexico started the war when they attacked the Army (led by General Zachary Taylor) that was stationed to defend U.S. Claimed territory on the Rio Grande, that they had claimed after Texas became independent from Mexico. The United States had attempted to be peaceable and negotiate the territory by sending John Slidell to Mexico City to offer large sums of Money for the territory. If the United States had started the war then the people in certain regions of Texas and California actually would have been better off under the control of the U.S. than under the control of Mexico, because while this was all happening, the Mexican government
In Document B, President Polk said, “I had ordered and efficient military force to take a position...to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces….invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined….to annex herself to our Union,... it was plainly our duty to extend our protection over her citizens and soil.” President Polk then mentioned the attack at the Rio del Norte, where the invasion in Texas happened. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was invaded by Mexico, meaning that the U.S. should protect Texas by fighting
Was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because they did not respect their laws, culture, and their beliefs. Second of all, this evidence shows that the US was not justified in going to war because it was useless to fight if the Mexicans were going to lose Texas if it was not now, it would be later on. Truly, it was very clear that the Americans won the war because Texas wanted to become part of the US, and the United States wanted to adopt Texas into their union.
As stated before, the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because of three reasons, Americans were killed, Texas was already annexed, and Manifest Destiny allows it. The United states had many superb reasons for going to war with Mexico. This essay is significant because it helps explain the United States’ choice to go to war with
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
United States citizens had already settled in Texas, but the thought was that Texas was to become a part of the U.S. (Sumner 329). This quote shows that the Americans already moved into Texas, the soon-to-be state of America. The evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war because the population was growing and needed Texas to hold some of America’s population. This reason proves that America was justified in going to
Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself wasn’t legitimate because of the revolution in Texas, motivation for superiority, and the U.S. government’s actions. To begin, the Texans began an unreasonable war because they didn’t follow Mexico’s laws and conditions. When Mexico started selling cheap land, they set conditions for the people moving in. The people had to convert to Catholicism, learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, and have no slaves. Many Americans didn’t like being told what to do, and disobeyed the rules and laws.
