War with Mexico In the year 1846 the US thought that it was their duty to God that they should expand to California, this was called Manifest Destiny. The US was a small country wanting to expand. They had rejected Texas offer to become part of the US several times, but suddenly President Polk is elected and uses Manifest Destiny as a way to get Texas and California. The US was not justified in going to war with mexico because Americans broke mexican laws set in place, they were trying to start a war to get Texas and California for themselves, and Mexico thought they were being invaded and land was stolen. That even though slaves were illegal in Mexico the Americans still brought slaves. “...Texas has determined to annex herself to our Union...” (Polk 325). “Mexico on achieving her independence from the Spanish Crown” (Sumner 329). This quote shows that they had land stolen right as they started their country hood.Direct quote: “A current of emigration soon followed from the United States” (Sumner 329). This quote shows The US was invading Mexico to get more land. The Americans Brought slaves although it was illegal (Sumner 329). This information shows The US broke Mexico’s rules. The Americans moved there in hopes of becoming the part of the US again (Sumner 329). The US knew it would get Texas eventually. Mexico has another story for what happened in the Mexican war. The war was unjustified and worked in the US’s
(Document C) it’s said that “From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons, Thus, when the Mexican government learned of the treaty signed between Texas and the United States in April 1844, it… would consider such an act “a declaration of war.” Yet, another reason the United States was justified in going to war with Mexico. Texas wanted to be annexed from the U.S., the only problem with this was that Texas wanted to be a regarded as a slave state.
The Spanish monarchy relinquished colonial power over Mexico in 1821. After gaining independence, Mexico established legislatures, including the abolition of slavery (Document D). The abolition of slavery would lead to a mass controversy and essentially a war. Before the Mexican War, a mass influx of United States, immigrants had entered Texas (Document D). Defying Mexican legislature, citizens in the western and southern parts of the United States saw Texas as an economic miracle to sell slaves.
In the war between Mexico and the United States, was from 1864-1848. The reason for this war was because the United States wanted to expand across the North America. Americans believe that they had the god given the right to expand across North America because they were more civilized also, more Americans were settling in western lands. The United States offered the Mexican government of large lump sum of money and Mexican Government refused to sell Half of the country. They saw America as a dangerous country and didn't want to reside next to them.
The Mexican-American War is a war that mainly broke out because of Texas. It is a complicated question whether the United States was justified in starting a war over Texas, but it is extremely likely that the U.S. instigated an unwanted conflict with Mexico that turned into a war. The idea of Manifest Destiny was one of the primary reasons why the United States was not justified in starting a war with Mexico. This was a problem that was widespread in the U.S. It asserted that they had the right to enlarge its territory from coast to coast.
Many believe the Mexican-America war had been driven from the idea of “Manifest Destiny”,( a belief that was said for America to have a God- given right to expand, From ‘sea to shining sea’). Little did anyone know that this believe would be cause of a great amount of suffering for Native Americans, Hispanics, and even the United States own citizens. Shortly after the Texas war of independence from Mexico, tension began to rise between the two of the largest independent nations, on the North American continent after texas became apart of the Unites States. Arguments over the border lines began to need military help, and due to president polk who always sought war in order to seize land from Mexico, really helped. There had been 2 very basic
The 1846 war between Mexico and the United States was a complex and multifaceted conflict, driven by territorial disputes, ideological differences, and economic interests. Although multiple factors contributed to the conflict, the primary reason for the Mexican-American War in 1846 was the dispute over Texas annexation, fueled by American expansionist ambitions and Mexico's refusal to recognize Texas as a sovereign state. The conflict can be traced back to the strained relationship between Mexico and Texas, which had been brewing for years. The territorial issues surrounding Texas, including the Transcontinental Treaty of 1819 and Spain's limited claim to the territory, also contributed to the conflict.
INTRODUCTION Throughout the 1840s and 1850s a major war happened called the Mexican American War which drastically changed the U.S. and Mexico and lead to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to be signed and which established the Rio Grande and not the Nueces River as the U.S Border. This also lead to the U.S. annexation of Texas and lead to the Mexico agreeing to sell California and the rest of the territory for 15 million. So you 're probably wondering why the war was fought but you 'll find that out later.
In Document B, President Polk said, “I had ordered and efficient military force to take a position...to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces….invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined….to annex herself to our Union,... it was plainly our duty to extend our protection over her citizens and soil.” President Polk then mentioned the attack at the Rio del Norte, where the invasion in Texas happened. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was invaded by Mexico, meaning that the U.S. should protect Texas by fighting
Thirdly, a second reason the Mexican War was not justified because US soldiers were in a disputed area. According to Jesus Velasco Marquez from “A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States,” he states that “From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons.” As well as, “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a
Manifest destiny also affected the relationship with Mexico. Several factors led to the Mexican- American War in 1846. The factors were that the U.S citizens were moving into California and Mexico. Since there were many revolutions happening in Mexico throughout this time period the Mexican government was not able to protect the U.S citizens in this region. Another factor was that Mexico was upset that Texas declared independence from them and then the U. S annexed Texas in 1845.
In a letter written by Rafael Antonio Manchola, “they refused to follow our laws, unless it is convenient for them… using their own colonists as judges and practicing their own laws, forgetting that they swore to obey the laws of Mexico.” Manchola was saying that the colonists were disobeying all of their requirements to stay in Texas and practiced, or followed the United States laws. Texas was in the wrong because the colonists knew that they had to follow the rules set by the Mexican government if they came to Texas. The American citizens did not have to come to Texas if they didn’t agree with these terms. According to the document “U.S. Congress Debate on War with Mexico,” by Joshua Giddings, “It has therefore become necessary to extend our dominions into Mexico in order to render slavery secure in Texas.”
“it was God’s plan that America extend its territory.” (Roden 317) God wants America to take Texas. The Mexicans are “limiting our greatness checking the fulfillment of our Manifest Destiny” (O’Sullivan 323) People are wrongly stopping God’s plan. Later America got Texas, California, and Oregon Territory.(Roden 317)
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
The Mexican-American War changed the Unites States of America in a monumental way. This war changed The U.S.A.’s relationship with foreign powers and the economic standpoint of the nation. The Mexican- American war, and its strong ties to manifest destiny, shaped the nation in a country bordered by two seas with a chance for common folk and foreigners to have a sustainable life due to the gold rush. The war can also be accounted for the downfall leading to the Civil War over the conflict of slavery due to the land purchased in the wars treaty. Conflict between Mexico and the United States began when Texas, previously part of Mexico, became part of the United States.
The United States war with Mexico continues to be a divisive topic among many people because of its background. The Mexican-American war was a fight between Mexico and America for land. America’s belief at the time was Manifest Destiny, which meant that they believed that America should extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific ocean. In the end, America benefited from the war and got the land. The United States expanded its size, achieving their dream of Manifest Destiny.
