Black men are six times as likely as white men to be incarcerated in federal prisons and local jails. This kind of injustice is the reason why cases like The Scottsboro Boys case, where nine boys were falsely accused of rape, exist. This is also why books like To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee are made. In both of these trials, they highlight the injustice of blacks during the 1930’s. The alleged rape victims in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Scottsboro Trials share similarities in their backgrounds, testimonies, and personalities. The events surrounding the Scottsboro case began on March 25, 1931. While on a train from Chattooga to Memphis, Nine boys allegedly raped Ruby Bates and Victoria Price (Linder, “The Trial of the ‘Scottsboro Boys’”). …show more content…
Mayella was hysterical and Victoria was comical. As Victoria told her side of the story during the trials, Victoria told the story of the trip to Chattanooga and back with gusto snaps and wise cracks, she had the court room in a roar of laughter (Ransdall). Whereas Mayella told her side of her story more emotionally, “Mayella stared at him and burst into tears she covered her mouth with her hands and sobbed” (Lee 240). This shows that instead of being like Victoria she chose to act as if she was devastated rather then get the jury on her side with laughter. A similarity is they both have elaborate fabricated stories. Victoria easily made up the story of alleged rape. She alleged that Charlie Weems was the leader and carried a pistol, but that Clarence Norris was the first to attack. He was followed by the other boys that took turns holding she claimed (Ransdall). Mayella also had a story she said, “He got me round the neck, cussin me an’ sayin’ dirt – fought and I hollered but he had me round the neck. He hit me agin an agin” (Lee 241). In her words this is how the alleged rape took place showing how he began to abuse

TKAM/Scottsboro- Final Paper Racism has been a major social issue in our modern world. From many years ago to today, there has been discrimination among many. Nine young african american men were accused of rapping 2 white women in 1931 (Scottsboro Boys) and a black man was accused of rape in To Kill a Mockingbird. The firm declaration of Mayella denying that her father abuses her after claiming he can be intolerable while drunk and her hesitant answer gives us the clear conclusion that Mayella is being abused by her father and her injuries and rape were done not by Tom Robinson but by Mr. Ewell
Mayella was guilty of victimizing Tom Robinson, but she herself was also a victim. Atticus said in his speech at the trial, “[Mayella] is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity her… She knew full well the enormity of her offense” (Lee 272). Mayella knew what she was doing. She
The Scottsboro Trials The Scottsboro Trials were a short time period of great racial inequality. It all started with a train fight between nine black boys and a group of white men. The boys were sent to jail, and the day-long trial began.
Innocence is is a lack of guilt, with respect to any kind of crime, or wrongdoing. In a legal context, innocence refers to the lack of legal guilt of an individual, with respect to a crime. Being convicted of a crime and found not guilty later on can frustrate the convict and the convict’s family as the time spent behind bars, is time they will never get back. James Richardson was convicted and charged for murder and rape in Cross Lanes, West Virginia on May 18, 1989. First, Richardson noticed the neighbor’s house burning.
Could Atticus have won Atticus could not have won the case for Tom Robinson. Atticus tried to win the case but the Ewells won because the court favored whites. The case Atticus and Tom were in they couldn’t have won and Tom would have still went to jail even if he won the case. Atticus and the kids were surprised when they didn't win the case but atticus knew that he wouldn't have won because the case was with a black man and a white girl.
In the 1930’s the Jim Crow laws were in effect. It has been know for the men to be protective to the women, Mayella being the race white, she had even more of an advantage since racism had still been
Hannah Strathmeyer Mr. Morton English II 8 April 2016 Essay While reading To Kill a Mockingbird and the "Report on the Scottsboro, ALA. Case,” The Scottsboro Trial and the trial of Tom Robinson are extremely bias toward Negros; Bob Ewell, Ruby Bates, and Victoria Price show a great amount of being biast in both accounts of reading. Bias is shown throughout both cases, which took place in the same time period which is around the 1930's which effects the authors purpose in both stories. One of the main elements is setting in the trial and book. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper writes her book based on the Scottsboro trial to show her side of how she feels.
Jim Crow/Jim crow laws- the Jim Crow laws affected all of the United States. Events such as, anti-black riots, affected African Americans more drastically than other people obviously; other developments, such as wars involving the American military, were universal. But universal events did not result in universal experiences. (in simpler words, the Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in Southern United States. Enacted after the Reconstruction period, these laws continued in force until 1965.)
Because of the infamous reputation of her family nobody wants to befriend her ; the white people rejects her because she belongs to the white trash and the blacks refuses to reach out to her since she’s a white and her family is real trouble. She kissed a black man, Tom Robinson, so she no longer belongs with the other whites; the status quo was messed with. But she also used the stereotypes to help her cause in the court knowing that the all white jury will never believe a negro she did not change her testimony but enforced the helplessness that characterizes the women in that era to get rid of the guilt . She broke a long standing and sacred tradition in the south; women’s virtue, as a female Mayella showed all the signs of domestic oppression so she felt the need to obey her father even though he is the one to pay for the crimes. This shows that Mayella's testimony was a memorized thread, rather than honest recollections of the events that took place. When Atticus responds with, "Was your last sentence your answer? " she still cannot get her narrative in order, because she is lying. Therefore she responds, "Huh? Yes, he hit - I just don't remember, I just don't remember ...
Injustice The Scottsboro Case shed light on the racial practices expressed in law that made a great impact on the legal system today. The actual victims of the Case did not receive a fair trial due to the color of their skin. The ones who played the victims planned the crime, and their stories made no sense. But like many of the trials during the time it wasn’t based on the actual evidence that was found,or even the defendants ' stories.
Her desires were stronger than the code she was breaking. When she tried to put the evidence of her offense away, instead of being honest, she had put a man’s life in danger. However, Mayella is not a criminal. She is simply a woman who carries a heavy burden with no one to support or respect her. Mayella is a victim of abuse and
